Crosby..yes there are tons of songwriters..Newman, Nilsson, Taylor, King, Wilson all with their own sound........but only Crosby wrote Page 43 and Carry Me. Two of the finest songs ever created
@ashoftomorrow sounds good but knowing what we know of Crosby it was probably all about having sex with two women at the same time...let's not kid ourselves...
The 60s were all about breaking down paradigms and this song was in fact about a sexual liason between three individuals and the pleasures that could be derived from sex beyond the confines of two.
Is it just my computer, gang? Or has some moron inserted commercials in here which stop the video about every 20 seconds?! YouTube and/or the community really needs to police stuff like this. It's outrageous.
hardly unknown, Kurt!!!! It was an extremely important song to some of us who lived through it --- quoted in my memoirs published almost 10 years ago! And Paul, yes, the Airplane did a superior version w/ Grace on lead on Crown of Creation LP.
Listen: David Crosby wrote this... respect him. As a child of the 60's, I confess to loving Grace Slick as much as anyone can! As a musician of 47 years, I have played this song so many times without becoming jaded (which happens with too many songs) that I can say no more. Whoever performs this song... it is still genius. Don't worship the creation; worship the creator.
Every single David Crosby song up to and including most of If I Could Only Remember my name, has such a resonance and depth to it that to me it doesn't feel dated at all - it always sounds new and alive in its mysterious way, despite the lyrics. His voice is always stunning. Such a unique song-writing style. Would have been cool if he kept making great music instead of getting fucked on drugs throughout the 70's and 80's.
I know you'll never believe this, but my therapist told me about this song as it was, let's say, relevent to my current circumstances. Very cool tune. Thanks for posting it here.
Reminds me of Willie's "Why Do I Have To Choose?" if only in subject matter. Anyone out there know any other Big Love like ditties?
Hey Kurt, thanks for posting this. Odd and synchronous that I would watch it for the first time today, as today it was announced that Alex Chilton had died. And for the comments that mentioned Grace Slick's, version....this is also Grace Slick on vocals in this version. Live long and prosper.
What I like is David Crosby's phenomenal song writing ability. I think David Bowie recognizes as he has chosen to cover his songs many times. I also hope his not as depressed as he was in Fullham, London where I came to help him one dark night, thought he won't remember me. I've still got that old Byrd's album, I'm glad his alive for music's sake.
@ker246 there is another odd thing thats great like this which is the theme from oasis in space that crosby and nash did for jacues cousteaus tv series which has never seen the light of day in here but im always looking .
Was this the version slated for Notorious Byrd Bros? (which lost its slot to Goin' Back). There was plenty of vinyl to fit it in. I'm still wondering what instrument(s) Mr. Ed (on the cover) played when D.C. sat out Goin' Back.
yes, this song was slated for inclusion until mcquinn and maguire got pissed at the lyrics, drove his house one night and effectibley shut crosby and his song out of tr mixed. it was a level headed attempt to do something unique
that's a very astute observation, sailor, i had no idea of the reference or its inspiration, i think i just tied it into the 1960's notion of the age of aquarius assuming it was some hip thing to say. thanks for your insight !
There's a great Crosby song actually called Stranger In A Strange Land too.The Byrds version only exists as a backimg track but Blackburne And Snow did a version (great harmonies-sounds a bit like The Airplane)
I first heard the song by the Airplane in the 60's and didn't realize the Byrds did it first. Neat song. Would like to know the story behind this song! Thanks for posting!

i would think so. wouldn't you be if you looked like, as he describes himself, "a koala bear with a brillo pad on his head". when that state of affairs happens, you need to have lots of affairs. with groupies. all the time.

i have always wondered why they recorded the track since they were all against it. surely the beauty of it would have compelled them to keep it on the album; but no, it would only be many years later that "they" would finally include this mastrpiece . lucky it was not "accidentally" erased at the time! crosby's talent, maturity, and voice shine through no matter what else the byrds thought about the song, and i god bless him for sticking to his guns !
The Jefferson Airplane did a great version of it I think McGiunn was more worried about the social aspects of this tune and potential radio play maybe even some jealousy of Crosby's haunting beautiful vocal..
yeah, it was pretty daring at the time, and when you consider spiro agnew got rocky mountain high and a little help from my friends banned from national airplay, it is possible triad would have met the same fate. as for mcguinn, all i have heard was that he and the byrds called it a song of lust and perversion and that it helped get him thrown out of the group. who knows, this could have been the signal song for the summer of love. ! i like the ja version but it's a bit too slow for me.
Wow -- I never heard the studio recording. Only version I ever knew live from 4 Way Street, which is a mesmerizing version. Very cool to hear the rhythm of this original. thanks for posting!

David Crosby was at my gig last Friday night (28/10/11) at the Hard Day's Night Hotel in Liverpool. How cool is that people?
He and his partner came across as a nice couple. Told me he didn't regret a single thing he ever did. Good luck to him.

Stranger in a Strange Land
The "water brothers" thing was a dead giveaway.
What makes it controversial is that it isn't just "about a threesome;" it's about a triad *relationship*. And it is a lovely song.
