The ants will also bring aphids to your plants so they can milk the aphids after the aphids feed on your plants try pouring the powder in the cans then just pour some hot water in can and swirl it around a little to mix it up
@TlaraMaxine1 It is a pitty....but my soil is perfect for ants...and in a dry year they really get to be too many, they steal seeds, cut plants, and just run amoc....but this year was really rainy and the ants were not a problem. Well only that they got into the house but I got rid of those.
I like your idea of using a can. I had a hard time keeping the bait out because of our wet spring in MN. I'm going to convert to your method right now.
I have a suggestion for your process. Mix the ingredients in a 1 quart Pyrex measuring cup. They have the pour lip making it MUCH easier to fill your cans. It also can take the heat from hot water unlike crappy plastic measuring cups. Since it is glass, it is much easier to clean sticky stuff out of it.
@chadvoller Great! i mainly did this to prevent my dog from eating it....but it does work againt rain too ;) And the mix tends to created a film over the top and it makes it hard to pour anyway you make it.....maybe I just cooked it too much tho.
@jihadacadien Mine poured right in. I did let it cool down before pouring, but it went right in with no problems. Mine looked a tad bit thinner than yours. I figured the excess moisture was going to evaporate quickly when in an aluminum can in this hot July sun. The t-storm we had yesterday might have backfired that plan though.
@donnerbrandpears I've only poured it where there was grass but usually the grass is already faded yellow from being covered withe dirt from the ant mound. Just use straight boiling water. The more the better you can kick the mound stir them up and boil them alive by slowly poring a big kettle of boiling water but I prefers gasoline because it's more fun .
@donnerbrandpears Yeah the boiling water kills he plants....so that's why i use boric acid sometime too. Kills the ants but not the plants around the nests.
Hey man! ; D Thats cool.. We used to do that too, just a little different though.Sprinkle 1/2-1/2 borax/sugar all over the ant nest, use a garden watering can and soak the top of the nest. That way even if they dont eat it,they will have to dig it and walk through it everytime they go in/out of the nest. ; ) *thumbs up*
I have alot of ants in the garden but, I figure that they have helped polinate my plants. (Your going to be in trouble with the canoe comment Ha Ha. ) In my garden I have every thing, but they all seem to take care of them self. the mice eat the ants, the cats eat the mice the dogs bark at the cats the owls take care of the rest, we also have a porcupine, chyotes, wolfs and some times a bear or two. yes I still live in the city. Oh I amost forgot we get a deer or some times a moose.
@crewlla I dont have to worry about bugs eating my garden I have to worry about my husband eating every thing. when I question him about it he comments " I am harvesting." or " I am feeding my belly with the yums." Do you have a bug spray for bugs that are six feet tall.
@crewlla I think over here there is just too much grass everywhere.....and poor soil condition. so the ants just love that! And we did use a lot of canoes! A lot of early trading was made by sea and river ways ;)
That's an old family recipe : ) but we put it together dry. I think borax will kill anything though, that's what I was told. That stuff sure kills the heck out of the ants. It does kill them all, it just takes long enough that it gets back to the queen and all the babies and WIPES THEM OUT! : ) Good luck!
@jihadacadien Oh yeah, I was agreeing with you, that stuff is 100% killer every time I used it. The Good Luck thing is like an expression. Poison kills them not the luck lol, just a manner of speech for pep talk for a guy going into battle : ).
Here is another one: KEEL those nasty little creepin crawlin Bastages! You can teach your French buddies that if you want, lol, it aint top secret or anything ; )
@MrGreenbudha Well honestly I'm not sure how big a problem ants are in the garden. I think they can steal the seeds somwtime. But the main reason I get rid of them is because they make nests in the shed and even try to in my porch. =S
Great vid! I've used a mix of half sugar and borax for ants before. But just in powdered form. If we have much trouble this year I'll try making your can traps. :)
@berean73 LOL it,s great that mosshead is in the States.Did you know that they are better knowm in the States than in Canada? There was a ban or somthing on selling beer between provinces so they went for the US market instead ;)
I'm totally trying the borax thing this week. I spilled some paint thinner on the grass last year accidentally, so I've got one of those giant brown spots of death for a while.
@steen1973 It does work...and strangely ants are very efficient at dominating their territory. I guess the only thing that can't wipe out and ant pile is a war with another ant pile. Or borax! ;) oh and it will take some time before the ants all die.

The dirt has good drainage, ha, yes that might be why the ants love your yard.

Moosehead Lager! We can actually buy that stuff down here in Southern California (at BevMo stores).

@ghostofpaulrevere Yeah the company had trouble selling out of the province (due to Canadian laws) so they went straight to California lol

That looks to damn complicated. Just take a big kettle of boiling water and pour it on the nest 2 times a day for 3 4 days and the nest will be dead
jjason55740 1 year ago
@jjason55740 I usually do this too, unless they are in an unboilable spot.
