@The18Game That's the pilot parachute for the rocket's main parachute. That red parachute is 45 inches in diameter and pulls a 15 foot white parachute out of the deployment bag. The nose cone section with the camera inside has its own 8 foot parachute.
@1969captainron That was the main parachute coming out (the drogue 'chute came out right at the peak). What you saw sail by the opening was another piece of the rocket that held the parachute.
@MarcoTUV - Probably a piece of debris from the ejection charge. BTW, there's no window here, it's just an open hole in the side of the payload section. That's why it "moans" like that.
@dhbiza Actually, it has plenty. The motor mentioned in the description has over 500 lbs of thrust on average, and has an initial peak somewhere over 700. It could put the average male adult like a mile up. Of course he'd probably be dead when he got there (from the acceleration, lack of oxygen, etc.), but it would have no problem lifting him.
Thats good you were a part of an organization that does this, I figured reaching an altitude that high would be dangerous for aircraft in the area and require some sort of regulation. Sweet video :D
Thanks. You have to get an FAA waiver to fly a rocket heavier than 3.3 pounds. This was at a club launch and we had a waiver to 16,000 feet. This rocket weighs about 65 pounds so yes a waiver was necessary.
@JetPropellerLabs Going to be easy to get one since I go to Aviation h.s. I really want to launch one this summer over 20,000 feet. Would you be able to respond if I have questions later on? Me and my friends are going to do a very similar project over the summer and we need all the help and info. we can get. I'll add you if you don't mind?
I built the rocket from scratch. It was 7.5 inches in diameter and about 12 feet tall, and used an Aerotech M2400 Blue Thunder motor on this flight developing about 600 pounds of thrust for about 3 and a half seconds.
wow that was cool. I want to get into high powered rocketry. I wanna move on from my estes rockets to these big rockets. how do you recomend I start off with besides launching the cheap estes rockets?
Totally cool. What brand of rocket? or self made? I live next to Estes Rocketry in Colorado.I know they have some high altitude rockets that are very expensive and you need the FAA's permission for launching. Thanks for sharing this video.
Estes rockets are not very expensive, do not fly to high altitudes, and can be flown in ones backyard (stock) without any permission. They are model rockets
that was fantastic! one of the best rocket-cam clips i've seen! i would have loved to make rockets that powerful while i was growing up, but the regulations where i live make it next to impossible, even just to get materials to make the engines. infact i will say that australian regulations are beyond a joke. if you want a good laugh, go and check what australian customs prohibit. the regulations we're stuck with prohibit ANY sort of fun! even airsoft products are banned.
