I enjoyed how cinematic the sixth movie was. What bothers me about book adaptations is that they're just subdued visualizations of the books. But this one takes advantage of cinematic elements that separates he medium from others.
I didn't like the 6th book the first time I read it (the day it was published), but recently I have re-read the whole series and I like it. Quite. My favourite is 7th.
Didn't like the movies, none of them. Never liked Snape either, but Alan Rickman seems to be the only convincing character.
I genuinely enjoyed the Harry Potter books. The 6th was one of my favorite books in the series, I was actually surprised that not a lot of people liked it as much. As for the movies, they never really did it for me. I didn't like the first three, the fourth one was completely rushed, but the last two (or three) I liked.
i agree about gambon. btw its pronounced gambin :D i agree. i thought he was a fucking homo. but now i want him as my grandfather. lmao. i want alan rickmans voice.
This movie was fun to watch, but it was really shitty as far as following what happened in the book...worse then the other movies. The Weasely's house burning scene was completely made up, and the ending was pathetic. "Oh yea guys, let's just raise are wands and not tell the importance of albus' tomb until the next movie? sounds good right, yea let's do that." pft
Amazing Athiest you are at the gates of hell, that anger in you is the heat of Satans fire on your face, follow Jesus instead and you will cool off quickly and feel much better about everything and peaceful inside, I like to read the Bible on the beach and I feel great, and I also know that all the other people on the beach have come there, for me to read my Bible to them.
they made a fucking romance out of the whole movie. they cut off the complete ending. this was probably the worst harry potter of all.... sorry, disagree.
I would say the opposite, I thought the first five films were pretty good and this was a complete letdown. This film avoided storyline as nothing plausible had happened within the first 60 minutes and the end of Dumbledore just seemed like an audience pleaser if not an excuse for the films existence.
@whoisthatgothguy The thing is, I found that when I was reading the 6th book I couldn't avoid teh sense taht Rowling had lost her shit. She should've said in the first book that wizard school only lasted a couple years, and she ended up being roped into 7 books. the 6th book was a rather bland book in that it seemed liek it only existed to set up the events of the seventh - i.e. dramatically speaking Dumbledore needed to die. It was teh movie that finally surpassed the books, in my opinion.
@Doctalen Wait, you retroactively watched the 1987 version? I don't usually say this, being an 18 year old who still plays Yugioh from time to time, but you are an incredulous nerd. At least the shows that I get obsessed with are fairly contemporary. transformers just doesn't sound like teh sort of timeless classic taht needs to be sought out by all future generations for the sake of preserving and continuing all taht is good about humanity, as an eternal basis of its artistic endeavours.
@TheMinxTail O I know it's not A timeless classic but as stated it's the only good movie under the name transformers. Incredulous nerd and proud of it. It seems you jump to conclusions that it's the only movie I own or watch.I own many movies and am always looking to get more. Why? Because I enjoy Film like you enjoy Yugioh (That's a card game right?). Did I seek it out? No. I came across it in a going out of business blockbuster. That's not a movie I would seek out. Anyway. Have a good day.
@Doctalen I was being sarcastic because I think I'm funny. Unfortunately, tone does not translate well into text - at least not with this character limit. i'm a fan of the books. and i liked the first two movies. i HATED 3 4 and 5 though. that's why i was presently surprised that i enjoyed 6. i hope deathly hallows is good.
I also really liked the movie, however I do have one complaint, there is too much empathisch on the love stories between the characters, I understand it's important for the character development, but at some point it just felt it was slowing down the movie.

I was looking forward to this movie for a year, when I found out it wasn't going to be released until June instead of November I was so pissed off, but when I finnaly saw it I was a little disappointed at how much was not in it, don't get me wrong, I loved the film, but I was looking forward to seeing alot of stuff that I didn't get to see. Hopefully the last film (or last two films) will make up for all that. We can only hope.
I never thought the movies were that great. I just don't think they pack the same emotions as the books. I feel like they cater too much to the younger generation with keeping things PG - PG13. I would love to see a rated R version of the harry potters
@HRRyan2 yeah, starting with goblet of fire they should have gone all-in and made them dark and dangerous with an R rating. the first three movies were ok, i liked them...from then on, they went into a tailspin, and i don't see them pulling out of it for DH.
@HRRyan2 They cater to their intended audience? The books were MADE so younger generations could read them as well! Harry Potter should NEVER be made into a rated "R" movie that would defeat. . . the whole purpose.
The worst thing about dipshits like this is that they think they're smart but they're the biggest dumbasses you've ever seen. The self proclaimed social critic is usually the biggest loser. Here we have example number one.
I think Yates could have done better. I mean the Harry Potter series is not a love story. This movie focuses too much on kissy kissy goo goo romance. And adding a scene that destroys a major setting in the next book? WTF? I don't care about them leaving stuff out that is unimportant, but they should have put in the battle and the funeral. Not having a battle at the end insults the Hogwarts teachers, and doesn't show how powerful they really are. And the assassination had no emotion.
They just killed Dumbledore and ran off. Harry was just surprised, rather than horrified and shocked. And I agree that they made the dialogue more mediocre. Most of the explanations about things like who the HBP is or mentioning that the hairy guy following Bella around is Fenrir Greyback are a lot more subtle than they should be. Hopefully David will tie up the loose ends for the 7th movie. But I like how they made tons of funny jokes.
Still, I'm going to buy the movie because I saw the midnight showing, so I might have been tired and everything flew by. I'm willing to give this movie a second chance.
i liked the books they were really good, and most of films were pretty average, predictable, but i really liked the fifth one for some reason, it just stood out from the other 5 (or the other four when i saw it in theaters)
I wouldn't think so. Schoolkids get the biggest holidays I the summer, so that's the time of year when they just want entertainment, and the most successful "summer movies" are the ones that cater to a wide range of age groups.
The only good HP movies were the first 2 in my opinion. The HBP was fucking abysmal. The contemptable amount of story that was left out of the movie is understandable, but the amount of story that was altered from the book for no good reason, is not. Especially the ending sequence at the top of the tower. Perfect example of the needless changes to settings and story that have been made in all the movies from the Prisoner of Azkaban on.
I normally love his videos but he got this review so wrong. i didn't think the hp series could get any worse after seeing 5 but holy fuck was i wrong. 6 was a goddamn abomination of the book. they cut out the epic fight scene and all the end of year tests. they took out dumbledore's funeral, WTF? i also would not mind a 7-8 hours movie (i know i'm in the minority) if they got the story right and had decent actors. this movie gave me a headache and refueled my hatred for mankind and movie goers
Huh, I'm with TJ on the prior movies, I'm pretty passive about them, but I think the sixth really drove the whole thing off a cliff. Dumbledore was awful; he was a total dick to Harry in the first scene, being significantly ruder to Harry, who simply wants to know where he's being dragged off to, than to Malfoy at the end of the movie, who is attempting to kill him. Very OOC. And then the rest of the movie was pretty much about a teenage love pentagram.
Eh I liked the 4th better, mainly 'cause the ratio of kissy-kissy-goo-goo to important plot was too high in the 6th movie compared to the 6th book.; mainly there should have been more memories.
What the hell, I'll give it a shot, but at a glance it doesn't look like my thing. If I don't like it then I'll just wander off and watch "There Will Be Blood" "Renaissance" or "Requiem For A Dream" to get my brain stimulated again. I've seen some of the other films but merely tolerated them, none of them really made me fall in love with anything or make me think about anything deeply, which I understand isn't the point, but that's what I look for in a film, hence the titles I mention above.
alan richtman looks like trent reznor. The books are excellent. The Vampire Chronicles and Harry Potter on audiobook are really good if you need aural entertainment for weeks that will keep you rivetted. I have enjoyed your videos all morning. You make me laugh even tho i don't always agree, your opinion is usually the same as mine. How do I talk to you directly?
Yeah that movie was ok, it wasnt the best harry potter film but it was ok. I was disappointed with the ending and the performance by the actor who played Ginny Weasley, i feel like that character really really suffered from her very important portrayal in the book.
i havent seen this and im english, and to be honest i would only go to see it because of emma watson, i like that shes well spoken i find that really attractive in girl, lame i know but cant help it. lol
i put lol at the end that usually is and indiction that the previous statement is not a totally serious comment, or just dismiss me as a sad asshole, but don't try to direct some miss placed anger at me for no damn reason.
if your talking about spelling or grammer then lol
like that means anything its the internet its internet speak
the way people are how they think how strong they are how compassionate and intelligent they are thats what matters but oh no your gonna pull me up on internet grammer. idiot
I thought Draco stole the show. He really had to reach from sniveling evildoer to confront himself fully as he has been called on to murder. I like to see how he folds under the pressure of his first real moral dilemma. Not the best Harry movie by a longshot. Too many teen hormone scenes that did nothing for me. There was less intrigue as well.
i thought the love was built up to much in the film and they cut out some important shit and of course they added a random attack scene what the fuck was that about.
As much as I loved Half-Blood Prince and agree that it is the best HP film so far, I was really upset about how much Harry/ Ginny romance they cut out.
Great review and I'm glad you think that book movies or the Harry Potter books are to limited by their movie counter parts. That brings me to a matter I would like to happen that these books would be made into TV series. I don't care if it's Live action TV, cartoon or Anime I think it would make it more justice to have a 13 or 26 episode series than a 2 hour fast forward plot. I sometimes take as example the Three Musketeers. The Anime made it more justice than any of the movies.
Have to agree with you on the vast majority of points.
I too wasn't all that struck with the previous films, but this one's quality really did show. Me and my sister are huge Alan Rickman fans, so to see him in a more predominant role was fantastic .
It's not an action film. That's the problem with the films in the past. They've all been pretty weak in terms of taking the plot of the books and relaying it well to a viewer who hasn't read the books. They spent so much time on the other movies making the action scenes exciting when that's not what the series is about and now, when they actually do a really good job the people who've only seen the movies are like wait, what? Its pretty sad.
I think Harry Potter 6 wasn't that ggod. It was funny from time to time but that isn't enough because it was boring most of the time (maybe I don't like drama?).
Why the hell did they take out scenes from the books and make up stuff?
Also i think they used magic without wands...what the f*ck?! That is total bullsh*t! Why would they do that to us, why? it's against everything to books are saying..as much annoying is that every one can fly

Didn't the sixth book say that the potions book was published too long ago to have belonged to harry's dad (and snape was in the same grade)?
I'm probably wrong but I think it was Voldemort's book who somehow imparted knowledge to Snape when snape become a death eater.

Most of the explanations about things like who the HBP is or mentioning that the hairy guy following Bella around is Fenrir Greyback are a lot more subtle than they should be. Hopefully David will tie up the loose ends for the 7th movie. But I like how they made tons of funny jokes.
WinglessIceAngel 2 years ago
Still, I'm going to buy the movie because I saw the midnight showing, so I might have been tired and everything flew by. I'm willing to give this movie a second chance.
WinglessIceAngel 2 years ago
I missed the scene between Dumbledore and the Dursleys but it would have slowed down the beginning a lot.

i liked the books they were really good, and most of films were pretty average, predictable, but i really liked the fifth one for some reason, it just stood out from the other 5 (or the other four when i saw it in theaters)

You gave a good review to a big budget Hollywood movie... that was painful wasn't it.

I'm interested to know why you thought Michael Gambon (you did pronounce his name right) was so awful in the beginning. What was so bad about him?

"Summer movie"? Is that an american thing? In Australia movies are movies, we watch any genre of movie we like regardless of what season it is
MadidusScientia 2 years ago
The bigger budget movies are released during the summer and since school is out and everything more people go to the movies.
dakotadenverdexter 2 years ago
I wouldn't think so. Schoolkids get the biggest holidays I the summer, so that's the time of year when they just want entertainment, and the most successful "summer movies" are the ones that cater to a wide range of age groups.

The only good HP movies were the first 2 in my opinion. The HBP was fucking abysmal. The contemptable amount of story that was left out of the movie is understandable, but the amount of story that was altered from the book for no good reason, is not. Especially the ending sequence at the top of the tower. Perfect example of the needless changes to settings and story that have been made in all the movies from the Prisoner of Azkaban on.
opiateofthemasses 2 years ago
I normally love his videos but he got this review so wrong. i didn't think the hp series could get any worse after seeing 5 but holy fuck was i wrong. 6 was a goddamn abomination of the book. they cut out the epic fight scene and all the end of year tests. they took out dumbledore's funeral, WTF? i also would not mind a 7-8 hours movie (i know i'm in the minority) if they got the story right and had decent actors. this movie gave me a headache and refueled my hatred for mankind and movie goers
MrMagneticPelican 2 years ago

Alan Rickman was my favorite too :]

I love your movie reviews, TJ. Your love of movies delights me... because so few of my own friends care to discuss a movie at any great length.

alan richtman looks like trent reznor. The books are excellent. The Vampire Chronicles and Harry Potter on audiobook are really good if you need aural entertainment for weeks that will keep you rivetted. I have enjoyed your videos all morning. You make me laugh even tho i don't always agree, your opinion is usually the same as mine. How do I talk to you directly?
asocietyred 2 years ago
Yeah that movie was ok, it wasnt the best harry potter film but it was ok. I was disappointed with the ending and the performance by the actor who played Ginny Weasley, i feel like that character really really suffered from her very important portrayal in the book.

WinterTopaz 2 years ago
Great review and I'm glad you think that book movies or the Harry Potter books are to limited by their movie counter parts. That brings me to a matter I would like to happen that these books would be made into TV series. I don't care if it's Live action TV, cartoon or Anime I think it would make it more justice to have a 13 or 26 episode series than a 2 hour fast forward plot. I sometimes take as example the Three Musketeers. The Anime made it more justice than any of the movies.
CrimsonDusk 2 years ago
After having watched the movie i can say they have indeed kept more in the movie from the book than they have done ever before.
They did leave out plenty of good scenes (bellatrix and snape to be exact).
They added in bits that weren't in the book but that's fine, it was entertaining.
The 3rd film remains my favourite, but half blood prince comes in 2nd to me now.
hildegain 2 years ago
Have to agree with you on the vast majority of points.
I too wasn't all that struck with the previous films, but this one's quality really did show. Me and my sister are huge Alan Rickman fans, so to see him in a more predominant role was fantastic .
nicky120791 2 years ago
Really? I've seen three of them (never read the books) and this is my least favorite.
There was. . . no climax, really. In a way, I was waiting the entire movie for something to 'happen,' and it never really did.
AtariMaxiToriyama 2 years ago
It's not an action film. That's the problem with the films in the past. They've all been pretty weak in terms of taking the plot of the books and relaying it well to a viewer who hasn't read the books. They spent so much time on the other movies making the action scenes exciting when that's not what the series is about and now, when they actually do a really good job the people who've only seen the movies are like wait, what? Its pretty sad.
ashoftomorrow 2 years ago
If we were to speak of direction, then I would have to use the following word to describe it: Awkward.
After seeing black-and-white films where EVERY person in the scene has a place, a purpose, and is DOING SOMETHING, this just felt embarrassing.
Remember when Harry goes into the building and all of the kids come downstairs and give him a hug? Then they stepped back.
And twiddled their thumbs.
It was just lame.
Action scenes would have made up for it, I think.
But that's just me.

Old County for old men shows how empty the Choen brothers are now. Just some stylized killing, a weird story, and the bad guy wins.
They were much better at making light of the absurd truths about mankind -- like Oh Brother Where Art Though -- everyscene is fucking fantastic
