i'm very impressed by your foal, i have a 3 month old one right now, and he's a terror!! really very impressed! i'm normally very good with horses and foals, but really this time i have failed!
i might be getting a 7 and a half month old friesian sporthorse and me and my mom are going to ber training her....i was wondering if using a dog clicker would be as affective instead of clucking? well thanks:) also if you have any tips that would be awsome!
Beautiful training and very good explaination of the process! And if Tempo said affection was more rewarding than food - I know that's what you'd be using! ;)
Maybe this baby is just sticking around for the treats ! What would really be impressive is if you used just the clicker and affection for rewards. No Treats treat bag. your going to have to refill your pockets soon! that babies going to be a little nasty biter.
You obviously do not know what this training is all about. She is not going to be a biter because if she bites she does not get at treat, as simple as that. You can use affection as rewards IF the horse regards that as rewards.
Hey.Thank you so much for these vids! I have a 6 week old filly (my very first) I now have a wonderful starting point for her training. since day 1 I have been handling her well, stoking & picking up her feet and so forth but wasn't sure when to start with the halter etc. now I will have total confidence to commence her training. I will look forward to watching the rest of your videos too. Thanks.
How does rewarding with food translate into every day activities? Especially with horses that are a little food happy? Doesnt it cause a problem later on with them always expecting you to hop off the saddle and give them a treat for crossing over.. ect?
I really like the idea of this training technique, i was just curious about that aspect of it.
Once a horse learns a behavior and it is solid, you fade out the treats. Also, with riding, you don't have to get off the horse. I click from the saddle and just ask the horse to bend its head around to receive the treat. The click does bring the horse to an immediate stop though. Again, as behaviors get solid, you fade out the treats completely because the behaviors are already learned!
@amosunknown not to say this training method is wrong. i think its a great concept but i have to agree that i think its too many treats. Ive trained many horses to not be afraid or fly sprays, getting over being head shy, loading etc without this many treats. i normally have a treat in hand but don't always give it to them. just replace some treats with pats and a verbal praise.
Where do you live, and can you look into training goats with the same techniques as you are using with Tempo? I need someone to show me how to train my goats... manners. They are pretty smart already, coming when they hear my voice, or coming when I call them, and they would most likely work for grain, sunflower seeds, or even fruit, or black berry leaves that grow on black berry vines.
This is really nice! I love what this horse is and will become. What a lovely job you're doing building a gorgeous partner. Check out Peg and Gumbo have a Ball, it's a fun one. And the cookies she gives are super motivating! Are you also using Parelli in your training?
Yes all 3 of ours are CT. And, they do all want to play, but I love that! It is possible to use different "clicker" sounds for each horse and they do learn the difference.
I was using pelleted grain in this video, but we also use hay pellets, small handfuls of hay or scratches (when she is itchy from the bugs) with Tempo.
I have been tracking tempo's progress and im amazed he is so willing and you two work amanzinglly with her what are you secrets ill be getting a new horse in about a month and i love your techiniques.
Excellent video Kim. Great work. This foal is better behaved already than lots of adult horses! Plus, your video editing/narration is so professional. Really appreciate the effort. Deb

Very impressive. Is Tempo's mother CT?
Does she ever come and want to play also?
I have trouble with more than one horse at a time. They all want to play.
