@lidiabonini I totally agree, Di stefano always understood the libreto and the lyrics very well, so in a way he also was a poet and thats why he interpreted every line exactly how the poet wanted it to be understood.

He was probably the best of the tenors but unfortunately he got sarcoidosis which cut down a lot of his lung capacity. He had to retire before reaching his potential. I think Pavoratti was his understudy the night he couldn't go on..the rest is history.

Had a really sweet voice before WWII if you can find his recordings.

Unfortunately, the fact that he has not perfected his technique in passagio not allowed him to have a longer and richer carrer in history, could have had the impact of Caruso..but in the recordings remains the brilliant voice, the unique timbre, the beautiful legatto, the passion in every note, the perfect pianissimo..next to Caruso and Corelli, Di Stefano is one of my favorite tenors, the most beautiful tenor voice ever heard! and this "e lucevan le stelle" is the best version of all..
