I can understand as a barrel racer you not wanting to wear a helmet, but it would make me crazy to have my daughter galloping bareback around like this. I'm sure when you're competing you aren't bareback. It also comes down to how a head injury would affect your family (hard for young people to understand). You're obviously a very good rider.

check him with ur outside rein, when he gets to fast, and keep checking him like little tug, little tug, until he slows down then let him be, if he speeds up again, repeat, then stop him to influence the half halt or check

The only reason they would get "too old" In their teens would be if thier spirit was trained out of them from people who want the "perfect obediant horse that will react to your demands accordingly." at fourteen that horse has got a good sum of years ahead of them If you let them show ya.
