This interpretation is a little slow in my book. Would sound better or more spirited if faster paced. I guess it's this tempo for the tuba player. I know those penta tonic licks and leaps can be tough playing that monster. Not an easy nut to crack.
nobody gives a shit about credentials or anything that has the equivalence of credentials...everybody has to start somewhere and im pretty sure that all of you people who put down everybody and anybody who has a video on here that isn't to your liking, probably should either 1) upload a video of yourself so we can learn and become professionals musicians (but please don't do that) or 2) step outside your box that your living in and shut the hell up...thank you
SSOOO difficult on a BBb. Once you get into the higher register, you begin to loose quality, no matter how good a player you are. The first portion is possible, but your lips would go numb so fast that the rest of piece would be practically unplayable. This is meant for a smaller C or Eb tuba where solo performances come at a premium.
@cjscienceguy1 dont you mean for a smaller Eb or F tuba- because a C tuba isnt much smaller than a BBb- but i get your point about how Eb is the ideal solo performance tuba-so true- credit to the man for actually playing it reasonably well on an unpracticle tuba for the piece
Not bad. I don't care for the cadenza. But a lot of US tuba students- four I knew personally- Ed Vinson (USAF Band in DC), Adam Crowe (Principal USCG Band), Jamie Mtchell (ITEC solo winner) and Chase Garner (Falcone contest winner) would have all performed the piece better their senior year of high school.
your such a rude person man. Can you for once say that some 1 is good. What kind of instrument do you play. Can you 4ward some clips of your own to see what are your capabilities. Come on chic put them on
I'm a tubist. HS- Principal Tuba, Alabama All-State Orchestra (1998-1999), Assistant Principal Tuba, Alabama All-State Band (1998, 1999). University- Principal Tuba, Auburn University Symphonic Band (1999-2003), Faculty Brass Quintet (2001-2002), Tamblyn Scholar (2001, 2002, 2003). Principal Tuba, Auburn Community Orchestra (1999-2003), Principal Tuba UC Berkeley Wind Ens. and Orch (2003-2004), ITEC Semifinalist, 2001.
This was a good performance, but I honestly knew many better HS kids.
The problem with you is that you have no respect for the player. If you want to make it anywhere it the world of music, you have to have respect for other players. And for your credentials we only have your word.
Not at all. This was a good performance overall, but the interpretation of the cadenza was not at all to my liking, and I really do know many HS tubists who just are flat out better players.
As for my playing credentials go ask Rick Good (Auburn), Johnnie Vinson (Auburn), G.R. Davis (Vandy), or Bob Calonico (UCB).
At this stage of the game, I have no need to advance my musical career. I enjoy being an engineering professor too much.
Not bad! It could have a had a little more dynamic fluctuation in the legato part about a third of the way into the piece. I'm not so much a fan of his interpretation of the cadenza...but to each his own....

Tubaplayer9327 3 years ago
you wouldn't use BBb on this piece. Harvey only plays it on C so it can be done even the high Ab, or you could use F or i guess even Eb. -Carolyn
Tubaplayer9327 3 years ago
The piece was actually written with an F/Eb (bass) tuba in mind, so that's why the range naturally fits those instruments.
As you can see here, though, it is very common to play this piece (at least the 1st movement) on a contrabass (even Bb).
CplJoebot 3 years ago
it CAN be done with a BBb, just more easily fit to an Eb or F
