Peter Wyngarde's career was all but over when he was discovered to by gay. Ironically enough, his partner of over a decade, the late Alan Bates, went onto be regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, be Oscar nominated and be Knighted! But then again the good old British media never outed him!
Several years ago, just on a whim, I bought a collection of old (mostly British) TV themes, most of which I had never heard, from TV shows I had never seen. I fell in love with this one.
I've never seen the show, but if it was half as good as its theme music, I regret that deprivation.
Great music - absolutely great show, too. I bought the first season by mere chance. The box looked interesting, so I got it. Bought the second box only a couple of days later. Never regretted it.
I fell in love with this show when I saw it in the 70s here in the States. I just hope they don't try to remake it (and subsequently ruin it the way they did "Randall and Hopkirk"). NOBODY could be Jason King but Peter Wyngarde.
This show like many ITC shows ( Prisoner, etc.) was very imaginative, but Department S was number 1 in keeping the audience clueless to what was going on, I mean sometimes the plots were unbelievable, I remember one where they kill people and then for some reason the houses where they kill them, disappear ( after the body was found)...
I prefer this to the one actually used in the show, its much more dramatic and flamboyant ( like a Certain Mr King/Wyngarde) Its such a great theme and is up there with Bond, Star wars etc ! Wonderful imaginiative arrangement by Cyril Stapleton too : )
Totally Agree.....ITV has the rights to all the ITC/ATV library through ITV GLOBAL, used to be GRANADA VENTURES! Shame they have to repeat the usual stuff, but glad in a way!!!
One of the really great bits of theme music to come out of the '60's. I love the way it builds up- so suggestive of the glamour, drama and adventure portrayed in the series. The music has really stood the test of time- probably more so than all the big hair and Jason King's sideburns!
Alan Wheatley also get seven kinds of shit kicked out of him in a Tara King Avengers episode, amazing fight scene, probably one of the best I've ever seen.
Loved sexy Rosemary Nicols even though she had the manner of a school teacher.

I'd forgotten what a brilliant piece of writing and arrangement this theme is. Truly wonderful. What ever happened to talent?

Top Gear also brought me here. If only they made The Interceptors Tv Show as well. That would be a good laugh.

I think Peter Wyngarde's career was ended because he was discovered or suspected to be gay.
What a shame!

One of the best theme music and titles from any one the ITC series. It perfectly sums up the 1960s spy genre

@terminator363
ITC is Independent Television Corporation here in the US, in its home base in England, it stands for Incorporated Television Company.
