The oil Jaguar uses is a mineral oil and should not be substituted. We flush these 6hp26's out when they come in with problems from the wrong oil being used.
Hi Sam, Thanks for filming another great vid! It's very kind of you to take the time to record, explain and instruct. Just wanted to say thank you! it's a great help!!!
wow great video im a guy that never takes his car to a shop a total diy'er this is my first jag (01 s-type) and the tranny started slipping figured id change the fluid first before i bought a whole new one... one question though how was the out come? doing it your self have you noticed any thing different ie. smother shifts things of that nature? basically would you recommend me to do it? i went to school to become a mechanic learned nothing on jags though. also in the end how much did it cost
@brondondolon1 The transmission has been smooth as silk since I changed the fluid. I was getting some hard shifts before the fluid change, especially when the transmission would downshift at very slow speeds (like when slowing down to stop at a stop sign. Overall, if probably cost me about $200-$250.
@sam1174 cool thanks i just called jaguar they want 45 for a qt of their oil i then called ford and asked the price of the mercon sp 4.99 a qt big difference so im heading out and getting some how many qts did you use
@brondondolon1 -I think these transmission are manufactured by Mercedes Benz, so i wouldn't be putting in Mercon (even if the engine is a ford). Instead you might want to call MB service and see if they have the fluid cheaper. By the way Jaguar say this is a seal for life transmission but MB recommends doing a fluid & filter change.
@vincentesquilin The transmission is actually manufactured by a German company called ZF Friedrichshafen, not Mercedes. Ford uses the 6HP26 transmission in a few of its cars, and those transmissions are filled with the Mercon SP. Mercon SP exceeds the Shell specification for the ZF transmission, that's why Ford uses it.
@sam1174 Neat well done video Sam. My Jag dealer tells me that I need this same preocedure on our 2004 XJ8 as small cracks have developed near the bolts and tranny fluid is supposedly leaking. They have quoted $920 to do it. It's interesting that no oil is in the driveway?
@topremf No drips on the driveway??? That sounds odd. I guess it's possible because the transmission warms up as you drive away, and then it cools down when you park. As the transmission warms up the fluid expands. Then when you park the transmission cools down and the fluid contracts. That negative pressure could keep the fluid from leaking in your driveway, but it might be leaking on the road.
@topremf Just start the car and let it idle for a half hour or so in the driveway. Then check the driveway. If there are still no drips, I'm guessing that the transmission isn't leaking.
Well documented & most interesting. Just about to have the gearbox sump tray replaced on my S Type 2003 3 litre, I have seen on some forums that it is quite a common fault.
u did a great job my s-type is almost the same except the drian plug is the level check and fill up spot there is also another fill up spot but i did about the same thing good idea with the infar red temp gun i like that
Excellent video, is this procedure is the same as any other car equip with the ZF6hp26

Hi Sam, bloody good video.
Would you know if this proceedure would work for my 1997 XK8 4.0L?
Keep these type of videos coming, very interesting.
Thank you.

Great video, thanks for posting. From the colour of the oil, looks like it was a job worth doing
