Secret Agent Man was acutally recorded by The Ventures prior to Johnny Rivers recording the song. The Ventures were on Dolton Records a Liberty subsidiary and Johnny Rivers was with Imperial Records also a Liberty subsidiary. The Ventures version had charted and climbing, when Liberty decided to have Johnny Rivers release his vocal version. Both versions are quite good.
