Now go and hear Stephen Bent sing Country and Western Cowboy on The Showbiz X1 Soccer Team LP'S . He was a member of that celebrity outfit that produced records and CD'S that were sold at the charity matches and many critics believe they were the worse ever LP'S ever made yet they still get entensive airplay worldwide .
The reason the single's run-off groove has the half-true message "singing dwarf gets hit" is that Steve's a small lad, only about five foot five, yet he was goalkeeper for the British Showbiz XI charity football team back in the day. Steve carved out a decent career as an actor, so he did well for himself despite the criticism this single got.
This was one of the 20 tracks which made it onto Kenny Everett's " World's Worst Record" compilation album at the turn of the 70's/80's and, arguably, it's the best song on the album. The weird chorus orchestration and instrumental break do the song no favours, and the lyrics are ungainly and cumbersome yet unpretentious and heartfelt.. I have a sneaking admiration for this song,
@ArthurNibble indeed, there was a certain "nouveau riche sneers at those who didn't make it" subtext to that Everett compilation, however good he was at what he did.
@ArthurNibble though, when I first got 'The Infotainment Scan' out of the library as a teenager, I had no idea of this and thought The Fall's version was the original.

@montymonty25 No problem. Definitely one of the... oddest tracks covered by The Fall, even by their standards.
