No, it doesn't kill the gearbox. You often use some overrevs in motorsports on downshifts to get more engine brake. You can use it for one or two qualy laps without hurting the engine. The gears is straight cut, so it's no problem at all, it would last for a whole race. But don't try that in your own car! :D
@BiggerThinking1 - In 1994 the F1 cars were much less complex than they are today. Fast - sure - but their stability and cornering wasn't that hot in comparison with todays formula cars. I think it's the development of racing cars that plays the largest role here to why he was "only" 9 seconds behind Senna's lap. That, a very fast car, and a skilled driver... :)
jeez, his gearbox must want to kill him. i notice downshifts in Super GT are done so much more quickly than elsewhere. I think that hurts the car more too.
@Arai4lpinestars but the funny thing is in the Tanaka Dome NSX they were having gearbox problems and cost Michigami the race in Fuji. (got the best qualifying lap time though) Unfortunately the NSXs were cursed with problems that 2007 season but on the bright note NSX teams STILL managed to take 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th overall season.
@GTRF1V8 it doesnt actually. all it does is using the motor brake more which allows u to brake even later. it only sounds "painful" for the gearbox because its shifting very high. if they shift down too early the tires would lock up though and thats where it WOULD get painful ;)

how is this only 9 seconds slower than Senna's 1994 F1 quali lap? F1 is MUCH faster than GT's. (Is this shortened circuit?)

NSX will always be inferior in SuperGT
Better off leaving the sport and IRL and supply engines again to Formula 1.

Watch the knock-on effect when he brakes and downshifts very quickly.
