You said it - Louis Spohr's music makes for pleasant listening, but never anything that really reaches out and completely captivates you. Though I'm NOT a fan of Wagner in the least, I very readily agree with you that Spohr was seemingly never able to put his ideals into practice the way Wagner ultimately did in "The Ring". As one example, Spohr in one of his symphonies uses TWO orchestras (one large, one small) - yet never really does anything with them that one would consider brilliant.
