@superstition222 For Santoro the reason is simply, artistry and on-court variety. Other players, charisma, easy on the eyes, fashion, engaging, heart athleticism.....I can keep going but if you are a casual fan its hard to get past the top 5. While a player like Fed might make it look easy most people can't relate; other plays emotionally engage you, others take you on their on-court emotional trip with them (Safin/Ivanisevic). So many reasons....

No. The US Open was played at Forest Hills in Queens, NY. They had grass and then they had har-tru clay. The last US Open was played there in 1977.
