I've always wondered why they had the backups. They should have had Kelsey/Frasier sing "Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs" with a silent skit going on.
Frasier Crane Day was set as September 11th, eh? The day that would later come to be the most notorious day in American culture? That's... exactly the sort of thing that would happen to Frasier. How appropriate.
The quartet is actually a group called "The Coats" or they used to be called "The Trench Coats". They're usually pretty good, and there is another recording of them singing with Kelsey, that is what I was looking for , not this one - too bad they sound so awful, saw them in person in Oregon in the 90s and they were excellent
It took me a long time to realize that it was Kelsey Grammer singing the theme song. I didn't realize it until I actually saw him singing the song. After that I was very amused as to how I didn't catch it before. XD
I heard this was written by Bruce Miller and Darryl Phinnessee. If i remember correctly, this song goes with Bb7, Gb7, Ab7, Db7, Eb7, Eb7#11, and Db7. Correct if i'm wrong.
According to Miller "When I was hired to write the theme song for Frasier, I was told not to mention psychiatry, crazy people or radio, but make it germane to the show. That was a tough one, but I called my lyricist Darryl Phinnessee and he came up with the title tossed salads and scrambled eggs, which suggests things that are all mixed up. I thought of the opening line, "I hear the blues a-calling," which seemed to fit, and we put the rest of the lyric together."
Grammer was pressed into service to deliver the goods, after the idea of using Mel Torme was nixed by Angell, Casey and Lee, the show's producers. Miller adds, "When I went into the studio with Kelsey, something magical happened. He started making it something way beyond what the song really said. It was Kelsey being Frasier."
For another perspective, here is what one of the show's co-creators, David Lee, said in the book "Frasier: The Official Companion Book" by Jefferson Graham:
It's been fun watching the different theories regarding the meaning of "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs" pop up over the years. I don't think "Hamlet" has been as closely scrutinized or more divergently interpreted. Here is what I (and the songwriters -
@Zorg2006 it's not complicated. Both expressions are slang synonyms of vomit. And "they're calling again" is a feeling that you're going to vomit again. And doing therapy has been compared to vomitting.
@wattever333 I messed up the copy and paste there in fact - I copied all that text from an interview with the guy who wrote it, who said the people 'calling' is simply a reference to Frasier's phone-in show. Search for theanswerbank and it's on there.
if you want kelsey at his finest, watch him in his wife's hallmark production of a christmas carol. mister fezziwigs annual christmas ball is a festive treat for all the family. watch him be revealed.
i was wanting an e-salad and scrembling eccs in my home town! and once i did seaing this song. o is how my heart fluster like funny stuff! jebus jebus frasier i die for u.
yeah that would have been a great moment in TV history had those barber shop backing vocal tossers not been trying to steal the limelight. Nice moment all the same.
Heartily agreed. The whole point of backing music - or backing a capella - is to support the main vocals. Here it sounded like he was trying to sing while surrounded by farm animals...
Was that the a cappella quartet The Coats singing the "Frasier" theme with Kelsey Grammer in 1997? If so, awesome! I've seen The Coats during my senior year in high school!
Yeah why the hell was there a barbershop quartet? I wouldn't have been surprised if Kelsey was put off and forgot the words to the song, I know I did.

That's Rockapella, isn't it? Usually they're pretty good but this was a pretty big exception. They were trying to do too much.
