  • use it on 3rd down...fuck the system

  • This was the way it was done at one time. One of my uncles was a drop kicker in the late 1940s, in HS and college. A lost art now -- low percentage compared to using a holder. Jim McMahon of the Bears was good at it. He'd kick them in warmups, but never got to do one in a game. I remember seeing the Flutie try on live TV. It came about because the game was in hand, it was the end of Flutie's career, and nobody was going to cry "showboat" on a lousy little PAT, especially with Flutie.

  • didnt see this in my whole life. Can you please tell me Is that like a punt oder a field goal????

  • @ModernW4rf3re It's a drop kick, very common in Rugby! The ball is dropped and must make contact with the ground immediately before or whilst the ball is kicked. If it was a punt and didnt touch the ground I believe (and feel free to correct me anyone who knows better) that it would be ruled a touchback.

It's a difficult technique to get right with a football which is why I think it's not used very often, the bounce can often lead to a miss kick

  • @C111ST1111Y ahhh ok thank you :D

  • @ModernW4rf3re and it's a field goal. this technique is allowed just like the place kick (the one you're use to, the one always almost used).

  • First time a player ever tried this and made it in the N.F.L, hows that!!

  • That's what happens when you come from the CFL lol

  • That's some Rugby shit right there.

  • rugby! :D

  • i prolly sound like a broken record commenting this but...

How many points is a drop kick worth and is it still legal in the NFL?

  • Comment removed

  • @BucknutDolfan Same as a place kick. In this case, it was for an extra point after a touchdown.

  • @BucknutDolfan yep. But with kicking specialists it has little need

  • @BucknutDolfan STILL LEGAL and that kick was only worth 1 pt cause it was a PAT...but it can be done for 3 pts..just no reason to use it anymore

  • Doug1975???? Are you Doug Flutie or something? Lol

  • My dad taught me how to drop kick football when I was 10. And for years I practiced just ducking around and got very accurate and consistent from 30 yds out. However its absolutely pointless in a nfl game unless your down by 3 or less and there is no time left and the other tram has no timeouts and u make them think your going for a td. And then qb steps back and drop kicks with no place holder.....someone forgot to tell bellichek that and he thought it would just one more thing to put on resume

  • Doug calm down we know already

  • @MrUSCGamecock LOL!!!!

  • I wanna see the replay. To me, the ball never touched the ground.

  • what really makes this video great is the sound quality.

  • Was the kick worth one point?

  • @floyjoy to the best of my knowledge, yes a drop kick is worth only 1 point. this was a PAT attempt

  • Thumbs up if you DIDN'T know you could do this in the NFL

  • Hell of a kick! I don't know if I could get one that accurate in 100 tries.

  • nice!

  • is that legal

    ?

  • @XXsclausmanXX

It's perfectly legal. Always has been. Any ball that's kicked from a dropkick or placekick can score points. No one ever dropkicks in the NFL anymore because the ball is pointier on the ends than it used to be to make it more aerodynamic for passing, so you don't get a reliable bounce out of it when you drop it to the ground. Rugby uses a fatter ball, and you see dropkicks all the time in rugby. Great stuff.

  • @XXsclausmanXX Completely legal, however EXTREMELY rare. the rule states that the ball must hit the ground first, then it may be kicked. it can not bounce more then once. prior to 1934, the ball was more round, so drop kick attempts were more frequent. the shape of the ball was changed in 1934 to be more aerodynamic because of the emerging passing game. as a result the points on the ball make it bounce funny and the drop kick was no longer a viable play, however its still in the rules.

  • @XXsclausmanXX you should also look up the Free Kick Field Goal, aka Fair Catch Kick. with that, when you make a fair catch you then have the option to run a regular play, or attempt a free kick from the point of the fair catch. the defense must line up 10 yards off the line of scrimage. you can punt the ball or tee it up. if it goes through the uprights, its 3 points. if no good, the defense gets the ball from the spot of the kick. if the kick is short, the defense can return it.

  • ok. where is drop kick?

  • your all dumb as fuck for coming here cause" apparently"it was a player drop kicking another one. freaking dumbasses. wow!

  • why not kick a field goal?

  • @haydenisgay73 It was an extra point. It was for FUN.

  • @SportsGuy2194 i didnt think bill bellichek had fun...

  • @haydenisgay73 It was because it was Fluties last play of is career.

  • @haydenisgay73 this was a point after touchdown try

  • Does anyone have a recording of the game itself?

  • can someone explain the rule of this drop kick to me? is that a 3-point field goal? ive never seen that before

  • @victorng3 its only worth 1 point. the ball must be dropped like a punt, but it must touch the ground before its kicked. it can only hit the ground once. last time before this game it was attempted was in the 20s. in 1934 the shape of the ball (which was fairly round) was changes to be more aerodynamic for the emerging passing game, and it made the drop kick a very unpredictable play due to the weird way the ball bounces. its still in the rule book however.

  • Lots of dislikes because there are tons of dumbasses who don't know what a drop kick in a football game is.

  • I disliked this cuz no sound

  • @GreenDayBestDay I disliked your comment due to your spelling and your name...

  • @TheJimcasey123 Cool Story Bro I bet u like the shitty rap and pop music right u little bitch?

  • @GreenDayBestDay Yes that's correct "shitty rap and pop music" is my favourite. However, I much prefer internet warriors. Keep it up tough guy

  • why so many dislikes? This was a cool play by a New England sports legend

  • @patsfan41191 i think its disliked because the sound was taken out

  • @ghettomotrukka ya bro I just didn't see the drop it was pretty quick

  • I CANT HEAR YOU

  • Thats the real way of "how to Dougie"

  • Did the ball hit the ground? Do refs in this day even know what a drop kick is?

  • When I first saw the title of this video, I thought a football player dropped kicked another player. But nawww :(

  • @LeftTundra me to lol

  • Flutie Flakes!

  • You guys should watch Francois Steyn if you think this is impressive.

  • Doesn't work on Madden!

  • @roysooners

I think you may believe he punted the ball. He let the ball touch the ground, then kicked it. Madden doesn't have that option. If they did, it would work. lol

  • ha mine glicthed once and it let me do a drop kick ha

  • if ya wanted 3 points...why didnt they just send out the field goal unit?? tad confused....p.s GO PATS!

  • @SniperAnim,

This was actually on an extra point try at the last game of the season in a meaningless game. I think the Patriots lost in overtime. Flutie did it just for the sake of making history. When the ball was fatter and players were far less experienced way back, the dropkick was actually done to avoid the possibility of bad snaps and blocked field goals.

  • my dad played with doug when he was little

  • @17fused

    cool story bro.

  • @red2razor you can't see from this angle of the ball hit the ground first. So you just believe what ever you hear? well, that makes you an idiot kid.

  • it never touched the ground though so it shouldn't have counted.

  • @DANKandBLUES

You're an idiot, and it did hit the ground. They wouldn't be talking about if it hadn't counted.

    i hate you

  • @DANKandBLUES You sir are stupid.

    I hate you too

  • @DANKandBLUES,

@0:06 you can tell that the ball touches the ground because it bounced upwards. Other clips show that it touched the ground. NFL films has some better angles elsewhere I think.

  • dropkick worth 4 right?

  • @p0wertek no 3 its the same as a field goal but in this case it was after a touchdown so it was xtra pint

  • @p0wertek

nope, at least not in the NFL and that's one of the reasons why you hardly see it. Why risk a drop kick if you can send out the place kicker and get the same amount of points

  • @p0wertek 1 point for a PAT, 3 points for a field goal attempt

  • You can really hear the sound of the ball once he kicks it.

  • why didnt he just kick a normal field goal? im confused

  • Comment removed

  • @pats4lifebb Can you drop kick a field goal?

  • @collegefootballrulez no, you cant do it at all anymore, it was a extra point

  • @pats4lifebb It wasn't a play off game. It was the last game of the season against miami. The patriots actually lost that game I am pretty sure. I was at the game, sitting in the stands at that end zone. The patriots went on to play Jacksonville the next week in the playoffs, I am pretty sure this is the year they lost to Denver in the divisional round. Same year the steelers won the superbowl when they were 6th seed. Just thought I'd inform you. Not trying to be rude in anyway.

  • @pats4lifebb It was actually a week 17 game and they lost in overtime

  • @dtboy1 this was a point after touchdown try

  • no sound?

  • And it's completely legal.....I make sure to ask the refs before every game to make sure that they know

  • The points you get depends on the situation. If it's a field goal, it's 3 points like normal. If it's a PAT, it's one point like normal. The reason I've done this for my team on PAT's is because it takes out the holder and puts in one more blocker. It's difficult but just like anything else, you gotta practice it

  • How much points do you get for this?

  • @pasaplayer if its a PAT, 1 point... if its a field goal, 3 points

  • This drop kick was, to my knowledge, the last one attempted in the NFL, and it was also Doug Flutie's last NFL play

  • A dropkick is where you kick it like a punt but it has to touch the ground first so you drop it let it bounce and kick it. I am a kicker and although this is hard I really want to do this in a game. Oh and it is legal

  • what the hell is a drop kick

  • @MrKittyluver27 you drop the ball like in a punt, but it must hit the ground (only once) first, then you kick it. if it hits the ground a second time it is a fumble and a kick is then illegal

  • @pats4lifebb seen as that person is from the US, maybe you should shut the fuck up using "britt" as an insult, 'til you can at least spell it right. Ignorant cunt.

  • wait so do u get points for that?

  • @cartex12 no you just do it for fun...........YES you get points for it lol

  • @cartex12 yes. 1 point for a PAT attempt, 3 points for a field goal

  • ^ Your the dumbfuck, it's called a drop kick asshat and it's legal...

  • So your aloud to punt field goals? Or was this just coaches be a dumbfuck saying oh I didnt no

  • @ninjadude477 its not a punt.. the ball must hit the ground first, unlike a punt where the ball is kicked before it hits the ground. if the ball hits the ground a second time its a fumble and a kick is then illegal. its worth 1 point for a PAT and 3 for a field goal. before the shape of the ball was changed in 1934 the ball was more round and this was more common. also the rules then for the modern field goal (a place kick) were not in place.

  • i have one question. Can you do drop kick from anywhere on the field, or just instead of a field kick etc ?

  • @smoku46 prior to 1998, you could do a dropkick from anywhere. Now it can only be done as a field goal attempt or a free kick after a safety.

  • He's a real loss to the game - I loved watching him play

  • I was there! it was freezing and i was in the nosebleeds section

  • drop kicks are still pretty easy to do with an NFL ball if you have any skill, I can make it from the 45 yard line

  • @fullboxxskater no you cant

  • Doesn't the ball have to hit the ground before the dropkick?

  • @Hope2009pc yes. and it did its jus hard to tell they did it a lot more bak in the day

  • @Hope2009pc yes. it must hit the ground prior to the kick, and it can hit the ground only once. if it touches the ground a second time it is ruled a fumble and kicking is illegal

  • @laza4liverpool I bet you like getting fucked by American women huh?

  • u illterate fuck

  • @laza4liverpool yeah, you totally did get fucked.

  • Rugby is a great sport!!!!! Football is Great to!!!!!! I grew up playing football, but in 8th grade I played Rugby, it was a GREAT experience!!!! If I grew up playing Rugby, I would probably be saying " Football is a Pussy sport", but it's not. But Honestly, rugby is way more athletic, you constantly run, no subs unless hurt (pussy), football in most HS and Colleges, you have ONE position! Avg. Football play 6-7 secs. making it about 14 mins of "ACTION", Rugby 59:00...Kickoff sprint is resting..

  • wat the fuck how come u cant do that in madden??? even if u do a punt play in ur extra point and make it, it still says no good

  • Hey yanks want to watch a proper drop kick type Francios Steyn and watch how rugby boys do the job properly.

  • @boerbevok no thank you i dont like foreigners

  • Drop Kick field Goals are still legal in the NFL, but rarely used. It's a much lower percentage than a place kick.

  • they were up and were going to win the game and Doug was ready to retire and wanted to do something that hadn't been done for a long time. It was an extra point by the way, not a field goal. Furthermore, if drop kicking were allowed on field goals then that would be much easier than a place kick.

  • i dont get it. why not just go for a field goal if they both worth same points? i know the other team wont be expecting it but how often are field goals ever fricken blocked? and are the odds better for a dropkick because that ball can easily bounce uncontrollably.

  • nice kick...go to my profile and watch me make a 68 yard field goal in a game! world record field goal

  • funny the longest field goal in the nfl is 63 yards..

  • @Jcncl95 You try it faggot.

  • @Archie8Manning

um fuck you? idk why u trolled on a normal comment but plz jump off a bridge... never said anything to you.

  • did the ball hit the ground?

  • on a drop kick you must bounce the ball off the ground. thats what they do in rugby

  • thats why they call it a DROPkick

  • doesn't have too

  • yes it is, its just difficult because of the shape of the ball on the different types of turf

  • One question for americans: why anybody makes a drop kick in a fourth down when they are faraway from the end zone? It's easier if you are at the half of the field. Is it a 3 point play as the field goal?

  • nice forrest gump quote

  • Excellent drop kick. American Football is like a box of chocolates, you never know what youre gonna get. :P

  • i didnt see the ball bounce

    at all

  • your also a dumbass

  • i second that

  • @ajwwr82 I did...it's kind of obvious.

  • @ajwwr82 yaa dude he did i was at that game

  • @ajwwr82 Thats cuz right when it taps the groud the player kicks it. its really hard to be accurate, ive been playing rugny for 5 years and i still have trouble with the timing on it

  • @nepnyy What the hell is rugny???

  • @Whomo the funny thing is that you know i meant to spell rugby and u still posted that comment just to be a faggot

  • @ajwwr82 u can kick it while its touching the floor

  • @wonka479 or after it bounces up off the grass, but it cant bounce twice

  • its real its worth three points

  • i dont understand people like you, like really, how can live footage of a drop kick in a football game be fake? Please tell me id like to know

  • @bodies42099 wow. the refs would have picked up on it if flutie had punted it. and for all the rugby players, a football is a shitload more pointed than a rugby ball. its really hard to drop kick a football. o and i play rugby, too. o and i take our dropouts. im not an idiot: i actually know what im talking about

  • whats the purpose of the drop kick? how many points does it give you?

  • Same as a field goal just without the holder.

  • wrong! It's worth just one point as it is an extra point not a field goal.

  • It's worth whatever the corresponding place kick is worth. If you kick it as a field goal, it's 3. If you kick it as a PAT, it's 1.

  • in this case it was an extra point.

  • you are retarded,,,, that is exactly what jesusthroughmary said....

  • ...and you, i dont give a fuck what you think. go munch on you boyfriend's dick, and mind you own fucking business.

  • take a chill pill ugly.

  • thank you.

  • its worth 3

  • They are thinking of making it 4 just so it can be brought back into play more.

  • really? that sounds made up (I am not accusing you, it just sounds like an urban legend). do you have any articles stating so?

  • @TomWaggle i don't think the nfl was but i do know that the afl was going to increase the points to 2 for extra and 4 for field goal for the drop kick.

  • it's the same as a regular field goal or extra point

  • heh, I didnt know that you could do drop goal in US Football too.

  • u can but no one does it....except for this one guy in the video

  • I read that our days they do, but more rarely.

    Happy new year.

  • Well it's harder to do in American Football

  • Exactly. The American football used to be fatter and more rounded on the ends, like a rugby ball. Over the years, the American ball slimmed down and took on pointed ends, to make it more aerodynamic for the forward pass. So if you try to dropkick the ball, you don't get a reliable bounce. That's why you hardly ever see a dropkick in the NFL anymore ... and that's why it's such a treat to see it.

  • @shammadamma its illeagal now you fucking dum britt

  • @pats4lifebb No its not.

  • @pats4lifebb um.. actually it's not it's completely legal just not easy so it's not done anymore look it up before you comment!!!

  • yeah! jerk

  • yes not to mention "american football" is the best kind of football there is

  • eyeeateggs:

You've never seen a football then, okay thanks bye.

  • is that legal

  • yes. in the old days thats how they kicked

  • ur a dumbass, you're allowed to drop kick field goals, it's not as easy as it looks
