It was collected as a sailor's song, but recorded only twice, from the Americans Richard Maitland and Captain Patrick Tayluer. Maitland learned it from a Liverpool man on board the General Knox around 1885.
So different from the traditional versions which always made me sad so this is a refreshing twist on this great old Irish song. I am still partial to the mournful sounding ones though -- it's my Irish melancholy nature I guess.
What I like about faster versions, is that the narrator sounds like they're not too hung up on leaving, because they're also looking foreward to the re-meeting.
This Cover its ok.

Is there a better band than The Young Dubliners? I love them. They take the songs of my childhood and make them something even grander!

An Awsome Cover! I love Orginell version but they have done this song mush better! I love it!
BitchBoys92 2 years ago 5
I'd have to agree. I think this is a song that sounds better faster, and with that rock edge to it.
As good as the original is, I'd say this one tops it.
Really do hope the Young Dubs come out with another cover album. Would love to hear Seven Drunken Nights, or All me Grog.
