Even when you remove the Kindle book from your Amazon Kindle list does the book still use one of your Overdrive slots until the loan period (7 days, 14, 21 times etc).
@arickrol It doesn't count against your 5 available titles if you return the ebook before removing it from your Kindle list, but if you were to just delete it without returning prior then it would count against them. Does that make sense?
If you were to delete before returning an ebook you would just need to go back into Overdrive and in your account go to "My Checked Out Items". From there you could click on "Get for Kindle" and it would reappear in your "My Digital Items" listing on Amazon.

@WellesleyFreeLibrary +1 Kindle and -1 to all other eReaders that don't allow early Overdrive returns. :(
