  • My RV 7A is ridiculously equipped and I wish I had $100,000 into it. I have much more but it is still worth the money. My maiden flight within 45 days and should cruise at about 200+mph.

  • "Do you really think that having the needle in the yellow matters to the airplane?" OK, so let's imagine that I'm at 145 kts ias. I encounter sudden heavy turbulence. I'm supposed to be in the green arc for that, and now I need to slow up. If I drop five inches of manifold pressure immediately to get under 130, I risk shock cooling the engine. If I drop more slowly, I'm in caution arc that is supposed to be for smooth air only. I wonder about the 46 year old jack screw holding the tail together.

  • I have an M20e Super 21. It cruises at 135 KIAS in the summer, 140 in the winter. That's 23 inches, 2400 rpm. It has a 201 windshield, cowl enclosure, no other speed mods. I could push it for more but that's already caution arc for that vintage Mooney. I paced with a friend's RV4A once. It had 10 extra knots at cruise, and landed 10 slower. It's light, experimental, fun. I've done Angel Flights which don't accept experimentals. Lot's of other considerations than speed.

  • @Scott6113 What does "indicated airspeed" matter if we don't know anything else with regards to temperature and alt? Also, the Lyc angle valve 4cyl was designed to be run WOT why run part throttle??? Seriously. The engine/prop reaches it's power/efficiency equilibrium ~2500. You have really told us nothing here except that caution trumps precision in your flying... Do you really think that having the needle in the yellow matters to the airplane?

  • @ellzyss, I don't have any idea about the speed difference in the video. It sure looks like you're correct though. I was just commenting about an M20E cruise speed vs the RV 7 cruise speed. Somewhere around 25-30 knot difference....

  • Those rv's are FAST little birds. I remember a mooney passing me like that in a C152, cant imagine blowing by a mooney like that!

  • LOL....that RV7 prob came in from a nose dive and went level just before the pass, or the mooney was pulled back, because RV7s are fast but not that fast to were you can blow a mooney away by that much

  • Point being, if you see a Mooney on the flight line you better hold back that "RV grin"

You are probably looking at an aircraft that can blow by you like you were standing still....with four people on board

  • @eqtworld You're right, this comparison is BS, the Mooney is faster by probably 40kts or 45kts. And a new one is $600,00+ vs $100,000 for a ridiculously equipped RV-7. Both with full fuel can carry 2 ppl+bags max. Mooney burns 2x the fuel. The RV can land a hell of a lot shorter and do rolls as you pass in the Mooney. But the Mooney is faster. (BTW, M20 @ 230kts is at FL240 under ideal conditions with 1 person and almost no gas, you won't see that.)

  • @33jarhead88

M20E is a 155 knot airplane at cruise. RV 7 is a 180 knot airplane at cruise.... 25 knot difference. The RV is faster.

  • @srvafool How non-observant of me. Didn't see that it was an "E," I stand corrected! I was referring to Mooney's claims about their new "Acclaim."

Just about ready to pull the trigger on a tail kit, can't wait to start my 7. Great video!

  • @srvafool there's no way thats 25kt in the vid tho

  • @eqtworld Better check your numbers again. Most RVs are faster than most Mooneys. A 200 hp RV-7A is faster than a Mooney M20E, even the Super 21.

  • This is a very biased production.

First of all a Mooney M20 is a 4 place aircraft, double the capacity of an RV

Second the current M20 will CRUISE at 230knots. The vast majority of M20s you see flying today have speed upgrades past that of a stock 40 year old M20e. You have to compare one with a modern power-plant/upgrades to a brand new RV-7. That being said I don't buy the M20e wide open only doing 155, it should be 170, easy.

  • THAT is why we get the "RV Grin".

  • Wow ! Thats the true test!

  • ahhh now I know why I sold my cherokee....the 7 will fly soon!

  • haha the rv 7 is the sweetest plane on the planet!!! can't wait to own one...

  • whoa. bet that mooney payment hurt that month...
