  • Really helpfull detailed instructions. Thank you very much for posting!

  • I installed a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM laptop drive into my 1005ha netbook and the speed increase is drastic. I can safely say that the i/o bottleneck is removed from the computer in day to day tasks.

I used hddscan to query the hard drive temperature and it only runs a few degrees warmer than the 160GB 5400RPM 1-platter drive that came with the computer. Go with 7200RPM drives or hybrid drive with onboard NAND flash, they don't use much more energy at all.

  • thanks mate - very helpful

  • is this hard drive compatible with asus eee pc 701?

  • The 1000 HAB does not have an access panel for the harddrive, though it has one for the SODIMM. It looks like you have to take off the entire back plate to get to the harddrive (stupid). Laptop HD upgrades for me are not a problem, I can do them in my sleep, but what a PITA, considering other models in the same 1000 series apparently have a panel to access the internal HD.

  • hey nice vid man very helpfull...just one question though? how did you re install windows???? did it come with a os disk?

  • I upgraded the HD just now using your video.

Thank you very much for posting! Really helpfull.

  • Excellent work. Thank you

  • Very detailed instructions. Thank you for the video

  • i think you might have a problem with putting that size hard drive in the eeepc!!!!! heat is a major issue!

  • Great how-to! Helped me out a lot!

  • my question is, DO I NEED ANY EXTRA SOFTWARE? Do i need like a windows installation disc? cause this is the easy part, replacing the drive. Or does the hard drive already come with pre-installed software???help me.

  • Really Helpful . THANK YOU !

  • DDR2?

  • What is this accent? :)

  • england fool :)

  • British

  • Excellent video. Easy to follow and easy to understand.

    Thank-you very much.

  • can the hard drive be changed to a solid state drive?

  • yes, you can replace any harddrive in any computer with an SSD and will notice a performance boost if going from HDD to SDD and less power consumption

  • Unless it's an older SSD and you try to make it a boot disk - then you'll experience a 10 second delay trying to do ANYTHING. If you want to restart your machine, you might want to go have a sandwich and do laundry why you wait.

  • thank you, do you know if the hdd size of the 1000h and the 900ha is the same?

  • hi there? can be upgrade 4gb ram??

  • It supports only 2gb, so no. (If you dont mod it or something, no idea about that)

  • your new HDD is 7200rpm... does this cause any heat issues?

  • very clear....thank so much...!!

  • Can u give me the full name of the Western digital hard drive??

  • WD Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT - hard drive - 320 GB - SATA-300 - 5 Years Warranty.

  • @uktech It's a 2.5inch drive yeah? thanks you.

  • Is it possible to upgrade with a Solid State Hard drive? And will it do any different?

  • Great! Thanks for your info.

  • THIS is what the internet is for. Great USEFUL information!. Thanks. Well done!

  • Can u give me the full name of the Western Digital hard drive? Cause I live in norway

  • thanks a lots you make my upgra de path much easier, and the word you use ans speed is very clear

and btw do i need to reinstall the window after replacing the hard disk

  • can putting in a bigger hard drive drain more battery?

  • Thank you

  • does this void warranty in any way ?

  • Dont think so, theres no warranty stickers that get broken.

  • no asus said they dont care rly

  • no, uktech - thank you.

    awesome and helpful vid.

  • does it have 2 ram slots

  • just 1 I believe. That's why you need to swap. plus, I think 2GB is the max it can handle.

  • "I don't normally go for crucial memory, just go for um crucial" lol fail...

  • is it possible to switch from hdd to ssd and does ssd plug into where the hard drive slot is or what sorry im sort of a noob when it comes to ssd and hdd understanding i know whats the diff between them im just not sure if they both connect by sata or not excuse my stupidity if its a stupid question

  • Does 1000H support SATA-II hard drives?

  • hi, could anyone tell me what class of RAM does the 1000H use & recommend some 2 GB ram cards to install on it? thanks

  • ddr2 pc5300 667hz worked fine for me.

  • great vid. thanks.

  • good instruction, but why does my 1000H bios say, i have a ide drive?

  • Thank you! very good instruction!

  • Just looking at this video makes me want to get the Eee 1000 more than the Aspire One, due to the much simpler procedure to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive.

  • excellent :) thanks alot

  • Excellent video! Great job, I really appreciate it :)

  • Thanks For an amazing vid! I love my 1000H but I wonder- If I upgrade the HDD, will I have to use the recovery disc to reinstall the OS? I have no external DVD drive and would rather spend th'money on a bigger HDD! Thanx In Advance!

  • if you upgrade the hard drive, does it void the manufacture warrenty?

i heard that upgrading the memory doesn't but i am not 100% sure about the hard drive.

    does anyone know?

  • Yes it does, However I did now have any seals that were broken while changing the HDD and RAM. If I ever need to RMA the unit, I just put the old HDD and RAM back in. I put my old 80GB HDD in a USB enclosure bought from an ebay seller for around £5. I just use that as an external drive.

  • im thinking about getting one of these but is 2 gigs of memory really beneficial if u just want to use it for surfing the web, microsoft office, and listening to music?

  • Well 1Gb should be fine, however, because currently RAM is at Rock Bottom prices, its a good upgrade to get.

  • I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO

    great vid e5

  • can u put 2x 1gig ram.. or isit only 1 slot for an 2 gig ram

  • clearly there is only one slot

  • Thank you for posting this video.

  • VERY very good video.. thanks for posting!!!

    -good job!

    AP.

  • great video!!!...i was thinking about either buying the asus, acer or msi, but this one seems way easier to upgrade the ram and hdd. i will buy it and upgrade to 2gb or ram and a 500gig hdd and install xp and openSuse 11.1 comes out in 30 days.yeah!. but ill have the new Ubuntu installed for now.

  • this whas a very interesting movie. I think it is very useful for me, because i want to upgrade my eee pc 1000h to a bigger hdd. I have already upgraded it to a 2 gig RAM

    thank you

  • Thanks for this great how to video. I was trying to deicide between the eee 100h and the msi wind, and seing how its easy to upgrade the eee 1000h i'm going to choose the asus. thanks man.

  • Well thank you for the info,it is very helpfull but don't you still have to reset the BIOs or else it will not state that it is a 2 GB memory on the system info?

  • Hi uktech the problem is the model :) i have a new one and install the same memory and it's ok for now :), windows xp + office 2007 + visual studio + eclipse, and i'm using ubuntu i other partition :) good work

  • hi,

i bought a new ram of kingstone, and when i install that i turn on the eeepc and monitor doesn't show anything. i remove that ram and put the older ram of 1gb and the same :( i return to store and i change the eeepc. i gona return the ram too.

  • You could have had a defective model. I would advise getting the Crucial memory module stated in the video.

  • i don't know if the hardware/software can take advantage of 4gb or if it's possible to get 2ghz out of this atom with overclocking, but if yes, asus should update the bios for 4gb ram.

  • I'm not sure either, but as soon as I can test a 4GB module, I will let everyone know.

  • just got mine yesterday. after playing with it and overclocking with eeectl it goes upto 2ghz but i doubt anything more than 2gb ram will benefit this hardware or xp/vista/linux. it feels more like a windows os phone or smartphone.

  • Very helpful - Thank you very much for posting this How To video.

  • yeh i just put a 2gb stick of ram into my 1000h but on windows properties etc it still says 0.99 GB

    ??

  • Yes you need to press F2 to enter the BIOS at boot up, then Exit SAVING changes. Then when you check the RAM in Windows, it should be recognised as 2GB.

  • Does opening the bottom and upgrading the ram void the asus warranty?

  • No, my 1000h had no warranty seals. So if anything happens, you just put back the original hard drive and RAM. Then just RMA it if you need to.

  • Thats so useful, you should do one of these videos for some other netbooks

  • Is it possible to put 4gb in it?

  • 1 x 2GB Module max at the moment

  • All sorted now, how straight forward was that, ta v much.....

  • Thanks for taking the time to video all the steps.. I found yr vid after installing a 2G Kingston module but as yet the system does not recognise any more than 1G any suggestions

  • Yes you need to press F2 to enter the BIOS at boot up, then Exit SAVING changes. Then when you check the RAM in Windows, it should be recognised as 2GB.

  • Someone just asked how many memory slots there are in the 1000 and if they should buy a 2GB stick. I clicked remove by accident. The EEE 1000 had ONE memory slot, so you will need a 2GB module to upgrade the RAM.

  • Wow this is a very good video. I like how you take time to explain every step. 5-star.

  • Thanks mate.

  • Oh My God! PC World wanted me to pay them £70! for a 2GB RAM upgrade. I bought the same memory as you for under £25 and just put it in myself. PC World is such a rip off!

  • Yes, PC World is just one of those places with high overheads. They need to pay the staff, pay the bills, etc.. But I agree £70 for 2GB RAM and installing it is a bit much for a 5 minute job. Well that's DSG for you! They try and trick people into buying these "Monster" cables when buying a TV. Those cables can be bought on Ebay for one tenth of the price. Another DSG selling scam.

  • Is the body of the 900HA similar to the 1000?I wanna upgrade my HD, already upgraded my ram to 2gb

  • Because the chassis of the 900 is smaller. The Hard Drive on the 900HA is behind the keyboard. There are 3 little silver pins that need to be uncliped to pop off the keyboard. Search for a video called: "Asus 900 keyboard mod" That will show you how to pop up the keyboard on your 900.

  • Thank You

  • just got my asus eee pc 1000h.....finally!! i'm planning to buy a 2gb ddr2 kingston ram. though i heard that it goes fine with a 1gb ram, did yours show "noticeable" change in speed?

  • Well running XP is fine with 1GB, However having the extra 1GB will give you better HD clip playback and less hard disk activity, thus improving battery life. Because memory is cheap at the moment It would be a good idea to upgrade it.

  • Thank you for an extremely detail DIY video.

  • Very detailed, thank you.

And a seamless process with this Asus. I wish every manufacturer had this kind of upgradability...

  • Thanks, I know many people would want to mod there EEE 1000. If anyone is thinking what to do with their original Hard Drive, just Ebay: External 2.5" SATA enclosure. Simply put your old Hard Drive in one of those and then you can use it externally as a portable drive. The Enclosures are approx £5 $10.
