  • This was in my Media mock exam today.

  • to a heart of any mother that is scary

  • What really makes this scene terrifying is that we have no idea that the aliens are benevolent, and this scene portrays them in a mysterious and very sinister light.

  • I just remember [at 5:22] being just knocked back in my seat at the cinema. The score was just so loud and the imagery was so powerful my jaw just hit the deck.

  • I hope she bills them for all that damage.

  • The Aliens are more than a little douchey. Whatever happened to knocking politely or making an invitation to tea?

  • This is what the false Blue Beam rapture will look like. When this happens...and it won't be long before it does...do not go outside or look out to see these things...close your curtains and stay inside the best you can...then get down on your knees with your head to the ground and pray to Yahushua that you be protected.

  • I have one of those little toy things in my house, its been lying in my cupboard for years.. what if i play that little tune? o_O

  • "TOYZ!!!"

  • Those nasty demons again...

  • 6:02 that shot is really amazing. I'm not sure how they managed effects like that back then.

  • This is a great example that you can scare people and mess with their heads a bit by using a lot more suspense in a film, rather than all the violence and blowing everything up that they do today. I wish today's filmmakers could understand that.

  • what kind of record player was that in the movie?,

  • Spielberg is freaking awesome. I'm glad I experienced this film when it first came out. He's managed to push all my emotions with his movies.

  • This is one of the greatest examples of implied terror put to film. Nothing violent actually happens, but we're just as freaked out as the mom in this scene.

  • I love how the record player is turned on Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are" starts to play. Truly a spectacular film!

  • They comin' through yo windows, snatchin' up yo kids.

  • @gfizzle288 Somebody needs to do some editing on this particular scene and play that song when the record player gets turned on, and then have that news interview of him on the TV when it turns on as well.

  • This movie gave me serious creeps when it came out in 77 i was only eight and this scene in paticular scared me along with the reveal of the ET's at the end..this scene is good example of how scary Spielberg could have made this movie had wanted to go in that direction...actually the follow up to CE3K was gonna be a movie called "Watch The Skies" were the ET's did things like this but with evil intentionsinstead of good , however, that movie eventually evolved into ET in 1982 instead

  • i was surprised the aliens were kinda good guys in this movie

  • this was so funny

  • This perfectly illustrates Spielberg's effective combination of wonder and terror. He's still one of my all-time favorite directors.

  • This scene reminds me of the abduction scene from poltergeist... the lights.. the things moving by them self's... The kid gets sucked through a door

  • @vacuumlover1 maybe bcause both are written in part from the Spielberg´s hand....

  • @vacuumlover1 well, spielberg wrote that too...

  • 4:46 hoover convertible

  • @vacuumlover1

But dubbed with the sound of a Kirby...

  • 5:27, theres something you dont see every day.

  • 1977 - 2011...34 years later...still the scene is powerful. A lesson to the current BS of Hollywood...

  • I love that bit from about 5:23 - 5:28 where the orange light shines into the house. Epic.

  • Hmm..my interpretation is the aliens wanted to adopt berry because they saw Barry very unique as they are. Barry probably knew the aliens were playing with him when the appliances went crazy and therefore was delighted to see the aliens..but the mother was frightened and didn't want the aliens to kidnap Barry.

  • Aliens nowadays don't have any decency.

  • It's nice that you can see the end of the movie portrayed on Jillian's sketches!

  • This is pretty scary

  • One of the best film screenshots of all time= 2:42

  • EPIC SCENE. BELONGS IN THE TOP5 EVER OF CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • The eletromagnetic field generated by the ship hovering over the house made the appliances go nuts. If that were nowadays, it would fry every computer chip in everything. Security systems, computers, the car, a few i pods, pacemaker?, the entertainment center, z-box or whatever, etc.

  • @jjohn2k cmon u know its xbox

  • @mrlebowski562 my bad

  • whats wrong with the vacuum lol

  • That kid is retarded.

  • OMG! I remember this part in Close encounters vividly! This scene scared the living hell out of me! I own it now and to this day when I watch this part, I get the goose bumps! That one scene when she sticks her hand up the fireplace to shut the lid and then you can see somebody or something running down the chimney send chills up and down my spine! Her son should never have played that tune on his musical toy! This is one of my favorite movies, an awesome Spielberg classic.

  • I play this on my keyboard to freak out my parents.

  • is it just me or does lil kid actually look like one of those

  • I just shat myself watching this-literally. I have literally soiled myself. I need to go change rather than keep typing whilst sitting in my own watery-smell mess.

  • @adamwilko86 Too much information, man.

  • Kinda lame. I kept hearing that this scene scared the hell out of people. I guess I was just expecting more. Oh well. Some pretty lame stuff has scared me as well. LOL

  • This scene is terrifying. And even more efffective, is how we still don't see who they are !! Likewise..a sci-fi classic !

  • This scene scared the hell out of me when I first saw it.

  • Yeah, me too. The entire movie is uplifting and awe-inspiring, but this scene freaked me out. It did it again just now, watching it.

  • @MishuTaste yeah me too but not anymore because i saw it for the second time... and the UFOS have abdupted the boy but he came back. the car one is the same it starts of with a normal car but at the one where the man pulls down the map. a strange and scary lights poppes up then they float up :l

  • You should include Douglas Trumbull in the tags since he's the guy responsible for all these incredible special effects! :):)

  • the fuck was wrong with that kid?

even if he thought they were friendly, if my ma was flipping her shit like that id wonder what was going on and stop trying to run to the goofy lights

  • What a tense scene, there was no way the alien's were leaving without that kid!

  • This movie scared the fuck outta me when I was a child.

  • This is probably the most frightening scene I've seen in a Spielberg film. Seriously, if this was happening to me, I would need a new pair of pants.

  • @atomofish Fuck a new pair of pants, I'd need a new heart and brain after my stroke and coronary.

  • Had I known something like that was going to happen BEFORE it happened, I would have unplugged every electrical appliance in the house before that ship came.

Everything that could have been run by electricity got powered on by the ship.

Just suppose if she had nothing that used electricity in the house--if that was the case, the house wouldn't have gone crazy with things starting up.

  • I don't think unplugging electrical items would make any difference, as they were charged by some sort of energy field created by the aliens - and I don't think it was a deliberate scare tactic, just a by-product of their presence.

The little kid is too young to be scared, and of course the aliens hadn't harmed him during their previous visit.

  • I don't catch what Barrie / Carry says at 3:40.

    "Mom look. "

What's freakier is he doesn't seem frightened at all about what's going on around him!

  • @happy7117 "Mom look, the sun's here"

  • Fantastic Scene-but it serously screwd me up as a kid.

  • would a child actually be this happy if this was happening to him?

  • That made this scene even creepier for me.

  • Chilrdrens point of view on things is different than that of brainwahsed adults so yes.....

  • @Darkfirefire yes... did u know spielberg as a child?. well he

  • @Darkfirefire Yes, because that's what the aliens told him to think. The aliens were inside his head, just as they were inside the heads of everyone who encountered them. They made him think of them as playmates, as other children that he wanted to invite in, like when he says to them "You can come in now", and he tells them to "Use the door!". He wanted to be with them because they put pleasant thoughts in his head, which is whey he said "ice cream!" and "toys!" when he saw their lights.

  • @Darkfirefire if its retarded, clearly. lol

  • @Darkfirefire In this case yes. He had met the aliens before and knew they meant no harm. They were his friends.

  • Awsome but, scary scene this is! Overall, this is truly a wonderfull movie! Haven't watched this since I was a kid.

  • god this a great scene
