what exhaust setup gets a deep grumble like this? my dad and i are rebuilding a '70 240z and when we bought it, it only had a 6-2 header. anyone have a recommendation for what to do from the header back?
I have a 280Z (N42 head and block) .30 over, ported and polished head w/ oversized stainless valves. HiComp pistons, MSA 6-2-1 header, and a Schnider street cam (460 lift 270 duration) Fuel delivery is from ZTherapy bored carbs with polished slides, all this and I don't even have 300hp. Real HP figures to be about 250-260. To hit 300hp you need these mods, plus tri webbers, and a stroker set up. Because my set up is in a lighter 240z chassis it only feels like 300. Just like this guy is thinks.
idk about that hp, but if you had the carbs bored with crazy internals you might be around 200-50 ish power out of the l24..... but i will never really know hah
just feel like abusing someone... DICKHEAD, YOU COULD HAVE WARMED THE FUCKING ENGINE UP FIRST YOU STUPID CUNT, THEN OVER 42,000 PEOPLE WOULDNT HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS "COLD SHIT". ONCE AGAIN FUCK YOU.
why are there soooo many hater's in the datsun world....we should be giving advice helping one another not talking shit. if you dont like whats posted fuck it and move on !
my stock 240 just started cold after sitting for 2 months and it sounds better then this, and i didnt have to use starting fluid. there are cars with crazy modded l28 gettng 200hp. you would have to atleast have a turbo or v8 to be getting any more then that.
@7570917 200hp in an L28 isn't really that hard to reach N/A. Get a decent cam, intake, and exhaust and 200 is possible. Upgrading the computer will give you more power too. From my understanding, upgrading from the stock ECU to a Megasquirt ECU can release 40 hp and give you better cruising mpg. L28's have 170 hp(SAE) so thats around 145 hp in the car w/ accessories(from my understanding, again). With "crazy mods" guys in Japan get close to 400hp. With a turbo, 500+ I've heard
you can not make 300hp, with 2 Su carbs, not enough flow, hell even with triple webers you are going to need some decent head porting. or a bump up to 3.1L which arguably destroys any rebuild-ability of the engine. if you want to make an S30 faster fix the handling, then the engine.
Anyway this is a fairly clean car and props to the fact that it is still running and on the road.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
Ok...I've read all the trash talkin' from everybody who left a comment. So, what is under the hood? Who built it and do you have chassis dyno sheets to prove it? I built a Z for a buddy and Dave Rebello told me that this L-30 is just a bit under 200 hp. (and yes...with worked SU's) Another guy I know had a Z with about 220 hp. in full race trim...It looks really good though.
A fully built L28 block with forged internals and the works plus racing gas is capable of producing 800HP (citing Tom Monroe) making the Z the most ferocious latent potential on the road of any classic car. The block is virtually indestructible. A stroker L28 without turbos is capable of over 300HP.
We should also be careful how horsepower is measured when people are throwing around HP figures. On an engine stand with nothing hooked up is far different than getting dynoed under road load.
Youre a wee bit optimistic for the L series and those results are -far- from the norm. When going to those extremes those numbers can be said for damn near any motor of similar displacement.
Who said they weren't far from the norm? We're talking about a 135-145 HP stock motor here. I can say 800HP is far from the norm for damn near any motor of similar displacement.
I think instead of me being optimistic about the L28, you're too optimistic for most motors of similar displacement. L28s are internally balanced, unlike most engines that rely on harmonic balancers or other balancing parts-mix 'n match to deal with their torsional vibration.
I don't really care to hear untried theories of people that any engine can produce 800HP. This is severely ignorant of an engine's inherent design and the cost required to modity it. First, if there's a short list of ~168ci engines that have made 800HP, I've never seen it. And second, if some idiot wants to spend 10x or 100x as much money building an unproven engine to those specs because they don't like my optimism, I won't get in that fool's way.
@mickeyqbitsko NO where near 300HP. Probably putting out about 200-220WHP MAX I have a fully built High Compression L2.8 with triple weber 45's The best Fiber optic(Kameri) Distributor/Ignition you can buy for that motor, every thing else you can get and I'm barely getting 250WHP
You can not make 300hp on that engine with su's, i will not even bother going into the many other reasons why that motor is nowhere near that power!!! However these engines are capable of 300hp but have extensive mods to do so!
I've seen 12 second E.T. passes on SU carbs. It's totally doable if you ditch the oil and jet it properly with the right nozzles and needles.
I'm sure you could get a 300+hp motor from an N42 on an L28 with some valve work and a good exhaust system, even with SU's. Even an L24 can pull those numbers naturally aspirated if you've got the right deck and the right quench piston.
I won't condone or condemn, but the exhaust sounds good, even through the digital camera/ cell phone video.
The L28E is the enlarged 2.8 L (2753 cc, 168 cu in) engine produced from 19751984 with dish-top pistons and a resulting compression ratio of 8.3:1. For model year 1981 through model year 1983, the L28E received flat-top pistons and a high quench head, raising the compression ratio to 8.8:1, and thus increasing the power rating from 135 hp (101 kW) (19751980) to 145 hp (108 kW) (19811983).There is an l26 and l24 too,the l26 is actually 162 hp! it was a hybrid and not long lived motor a shame.
A naturally aspirated sub 3 liter inline-6 would have serious difficulty making 300hp. Oh yeah- when someone claims a nice round number like 300, 400, 450 etc it will be treated rather dubiously, and usually means the owner has no idea. During Test and Tune passes at the local drag strip my 33 year old 263hp Mazda Rotary Truck regularly mops the floor with '450hp' cars.
Nice car, modern classic but please for gods sake replace valve stem seals.
300hp on a 2.4 liter with dualies? Not going to happen. Hell, the best L engine builders can barely make a three liter L series engine put out 300whp.
