I play around with my cat, but when he starts hissing, biting harshly, and clawing, I back off and let him cool down to give him respect. Later on he'll lick my hair and face. Treat animals with respect and they'll treat you with respect. Treat them bad and one day they'll tear up someone innocent. He'll play and still be purring, I know he's comfortable with me.
