I am German and I love this ad. It pokes fun at Germans AND Britons (especially their inabillity to beat us at penalties :P). So its fair. We are all friends now after all.
Although I Find this advert insult mainly due to the fact that as Brits we don't need reminding abut German goal keepers its rude and insulting , we beat them in 2 world wars and they still had the last laugh. But its the British sense of humor that has keep us fight when others just give up, its things like this that make me proud to be British. :)
You'd be hard put nowadays to find an advert with a WW2 theme in it. Last one was a McDonalds advert, a few years back, but the WW2 theme was watered down. i.e the "German" guards uniform was slightly altered
thx cussford for posting this. Everyone has their fav funny ad and this one happens to be mine (so buggar off the rest of ya and find yer own 'funniest')
I remember watching a news story about this particular ad and I though it was another thing from adidas. I just watched the dam busters trailer when I thought to look this up. the way the german guard caught all those bouncing bombs just made me laugh. Good job with the upload!
so peter jackson is going to start filming the new dambusters film in early 2009 in new zealand i also hope that they keep the dogs name in the film Nigger: This was the name of Gibson's black Labrador dog. Sharp-eyed viewers may spot the "ghost of Nigger" running through the trees at the end of the film (where Gibson is talking to Wallis at Scampton) - no dog was known to be on the base when the film was made, so the identity of the animal seen on film remains a mystery!
Last time I saw the film, the dogs name had been dubbed to Digger. I'm sure nigger was the code word for a successful "hit" that was also changed. It's now the politically correct Nazi's we have to fight. They're trying to re-write history to suit their social engineering.
I thought it was very funny - the German soldier eating his doorstep buttie and then having to drop it as the bombers approach is a wonderful touch. The British sense of humour in these matters isn't always appreciated - even by their fellow Brits - but the British sense of humour irritated the Nazis sufficiently that the marching anthem of the U boat corps made special reference to it.
That has to be one of the best adverts ever. Still doesn't beat the "You've been tangoe'd" ad though. Or the honda "chain of events" ad. But still, it is good
As has been mentioned, it was originally intended that the bombs (they were actually depth charges rather than bombs) would be spherical in shape. Original tests with smaller prototype bombs were with the spherical versions. However, once the full sized bomb was used, the casings kept disintegrating on impact with the water. In the end, it was decided that the bombs worked just as well without the casings.
A great ad: very funny, and a sort of tribute to the great German soccer players at the same time. I remember the first time I saw this ad, those saves were quite a surprise!
I know war is not funny, but people have always used humour to help them cope with terrible situations, so I don't find it offensive at all.
A classic ad, which brings back fond memories of living in England.
When this advert came out, some left wing commie, pinko, softie, poofda, complained. that it was racist and not fitting to the memories of the men that died on tis raid. An old lady wrote to a news paper, sayig her husband had died on this mission. But supported the advert, saying that, amongst other things it was a sence of humour that saw the country through the war!
WHAT? I don't think even Russ Abbot realised he played the german soldier in this ad - BECAUSE HE DIDN'T!! Abbot was one of the biggest TV stars in the Uk at the time this ad was filmed. Apart from the fact the extra looks nothing like him, what the hell makes you think he'd do such an anonymous cameo ?
i can live with being wrong , or in this case Wikpedia being wrong. shame instead of replying constructively you choose to use words like simple and retarded. still i guess it makes u feel better. its sad that u feel the need to be abusive to get your point across. so its not Russ Abbot. BIG DEAL. now please move along
The Carling Black label adverts are amongst the very best, most entertaining adverts of all time!!! The homage to the Dambusters in this ad is only topped by the hilarious "sunbeds ad" in which the English guy foils the Germans who are trying to steal the sun beds early in the morning!!!
Any idea that actually works isn't rediculous: the bombs were meant to burst dams and that's what they did. I live just over the hill where the dam in this ad was filmed.
This ad did cause a ruckus at the time as themes concerning the activities of Bomber Command are always controversial and emotive.
Including the fact that they were the only major service that did not receive their own campaign medal at the end of the war.
What were they suppose to do, talk to the Nazis really nicely? Its a shame that they died but but in the end it probably saved many lives. Also, I'm sorry that you have to act so self righteous to fuel your low self esteem, don't kid yourself, you would have done the same.
You could prolly buy Carling lager in Iraq up until spring 2003 or thereabouts. Why the hell we decided to turn a fairly westernised country into an islamic shiitehole is anyone's guess..
Nerdier still, the casings that gave the spherical shape did break during testing. It wae discovered that the 'oil drum' shaped bomb actually bounced anyway so they did not need the spherical shape.
nerdier still - the upkeep bombs were originally spherical, but the required weight of explosive made them too large to fit under a Lanc - so the barrel was adopted to bring the diameter down

Russ Abbott DOES NOT appear in this advert!

Sorry for overreacting or appearing abusive.
But you were stating your belief that Russ Abbott appears in this ad just because Wikpedia said so, when it's obviously not the case..
(I should've of course complained to the Wikipedia page link stating this bollocks as fact instead , rather than having a personal pop at you.)
In closing - I respect your retraction, and apologize for calling you a retard.

Even nerdier. The original design concept was spherical for an anti ship bomb (Highball). The dam bombs (Upkeep) were barrel shaped.
