@endofus Because God hadn't thought to include in the admonishment not to join any Secret Societies. Since there was no specific prohibition, it was ok for the prophet to participate. Besides, how else could Joseph have received the temple ceremony secrets if they had been kept by the masons for all those hundreds of years just awaiting Joseph Smith's birth? Thus, his membership with the masons must've been inspired and necessary.

Windsor, ON is also heavily dependent on the auto industry, just like Detroit. It also has high unemployment. But it can go YEARS without any murders. The crime rate in Windsor is lower than Disneyland. The reason is that Windsor is nearly 100% white. Places that are nearly 100% white like Provo, UT or Windsor have very low crime rates, especially violent crime. You don't have to worry about getting killed, robbed, or raped in Japan, China, or Korea either.
