  • Some one going into Slavery, after the Thermal Nuclear War world 3, Us Monkey's ,and Gorillas are coming for pay back. I love the Hide Symbolism , and Metaphor of this Movie.

  • Roddy McDowell was not involved in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" either. Actor David Watson portrayed Cornelius in that film.

  • @Actionguy1 Seriously? I never knew that! I wonder why he didn't reprise Cornelius in that one...hmmm

  • @whitewolfwithblackSP It seems that McDowell was already commited to another project when "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" went into production. I didn't realize it was another actor in the role of Cornelius until I read someting about it several years afterward. David Watson obviously did a great job because I thought it was McDowell too.

  • @Actionguy1 Yes indeed. Lol I was JUST watching my dvd documentary of the planet of the apes and he mentioned that (roddy narrates it) and they showed a clip of cornelius talking in the second film, and I noticed his voice was not the same at all, but that was only because it was pointed out to me. Otherwise I didn't even notice, both men did a great job at playing cornelius.

  • The 1970s were the nadir of cartoon animation. Compared to, say, the original Johnny Quest that aired in the early 60s, or the animation renaissance that began around the time of Batman, the stuff from the early to late 70s was just half-animated cheesy junk. I will agree that the animation renaissance ended by about 2005 when the Cartoon Network began canceling all the great shows in favor of frat-house bathroom humor and endless re-runs of Fox Network garbage.

  • "cartoons of today are horrible"

uh, no. there is more quality animation today than ever before. this and a few other animated nuggets were floating on a sea of 1970s crap. the statement "cartoons of today are horrible" shows your ignorance.

  • @ickybob666 Raised on a diet of Spongebob Squarepants and Family Guy?

At least the animators of the 70s had standards.

  • @AllRequired I grew up in the late 1960s and 1970s. I'm well versed in animation of the time. I'm also a working professional artist in the entertainment industry (20 years now) so I think I'm qualified to make aesthetic observations on the quality of animation then vs now. Cartoon network has a ton of great shows. Venture Bros, Flapjack, Adventure time, Hellboy (Animated) -lots more. the only reason you are not finding quality animation is because you are not looking for it.

  • @ickybob666 I also grew up in the late 1960s and 1970s. There is much much more to the quality of animation than aesthetics. In those days, animation was hand-drawn, with almost no shortcuts. It took heart and substance to make it all work. Today's animation is almost entirely CG, which makes for lovely aesthetics but virtually devoid of depth. Give me the 1970s crap you talk of any day of the week over today's rotting carcasses.

  • Great cartooning indeed!

  • this animated series more closely resembles Pierre Boulle's original novel than the Fox movie series.

  • Hand drawn animation is more fluid, organic and beautiful than anything that can be done in the digital realm. CG animation is too perfect and boring.

  • Very good. The animation is scarce and the pacing feels slow. But it creates an atmosphere of desolation and uncertainty which makes me think of the best movies in the PotA series.

The 1970s were definitely the best decade for sci-fi.

  • I'm 46 years old. My Saturday morning cartoons included this, Star Trek the Animated series, Scooby Doo, and other great shows. Todays Saturday morning programming sucks. Kids are more arrogant and PC today. It's a crying shame we don't have shows like this anymore.

  • These episodes are all included in Hasslein Books' reference publications - "Timeline of the Planet of the Apes" and the newly released "Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes".

  • I remember back when Saturday morning cartoons meant something. They always had a preview of what was new for the season on the Friday night before airing Saturday.I still remember seeing this intro for the first time on that Friday night and I was so happy to be a Planet of the Apes fan.

  • i am cornie, princly scientist of Ter, secret powers were revealed to me the day a held-alooft my magic book and said

BY THE POWER OF BUDWISER AND STEROIDS!!!

    I-HAVE-SOME-AMMO!!!

    my book became a rifle

    and I became.

FRED FLINTSTONE, MOST POWERFUL APE on the planet!!!

  • @sevendram i agree with you.

  • When I was four when this came it, this was the bomb!

  • This was closer too Pierre la Boulle's novel than anything else was. Didn't the apes fly planes in this?

  • we never had this cartoon in ireland. what a pity.

  • i saw this in a used cd store for $12 but i didn't get it, oh well

  • Anyone know where I could get these on DVD?

  • @chorkybrenner ..Amazon.com

  • saturday mornings used to be saturday morning back then..pajams on..box of favorite cereal..and cartoons till twelve..goddamn i miss those saturday mornings..cartoons today aint worth shit

  • @scruffyrunkin Totally agree. I was a kid back in the 70s. There were dozens of great shows including live shows like Land of the Lost, Shazam/Isis hour, Run Joe Run, Bigfoot and Wildboy, ARK II, and others. I saw a few saturday morning shows on ABC a few years ago just out of curiosity. The shows were mostly teenagers being jerks and insulting each other. I miss those days too sometimes.

  • That's cool, I never knew there was a POTA cartoon! Unless I just forgot.

  • They were scarecrows ...didn't ya watch the movie?

  • should'nt the show be rated TV-PG?

  • It was scary back then and I watched it again to see if it was really all that scary and it turned out to be even more scary because I can follow the story better now. That ape in the intro blowing that war horn still scares me.

  • This is one of the best examples of what Great Cartooning looks like. The cartoons of today are horrible. This definitely sets the bar along with the original Johnny Quest.

  • This series was very different from anything DePatie-Freleng had ever done before. It seemed more like something from the later Marvel Studios.

  • Wow, the upside-down crucifixations are really grim. How could they get away with this on a kid's Saturday morning cartoon??

  • I think because it was shown so briefly.

  • I have this show on dvd. And yeah, too bad it only lasted one season. It was getting very interesting.

  • I have this on DVD too, and it was really getting good when it was cancelled. Judy (aka "Usa") looks a lot like ER's Sherry Stringfield!

  • I love the opening music...light and quick, then BAAAAAAAAAAAAAA as a fist smashes down onto the screen.

  • Comment removed

  • C'mon, that scarred you as a kid? I was 8 when I saw Planet of the Apes. Didn't phase me.

  • That intro was scary. The music and how aggressive the apes are. How those apes look too. As a 7 year old I preferred speed buggy and hong kong phoey. Laugh

  • Me too! But this cartoon was unique! I bought the dvd when it came out. Too bad they didn't make more. I suppose after seeing all the Apes movies at that age, you get use to it. They just don't cartoons like that anymore.

  • This cartoon intro scared the crap out of me as a kid!

There was a episode I remember that featured a Giant Gorilla fighting a Giant Snake Bird,Please post it!

One thing I liked about this cartoon is it was dead serious, there was no little anoying animal comedy relief [that was very common in alot of these 70s cartoons] to spoil it!

Too bad it only lasted one season.

    Bummer!

  • It's the old Superfriends announcer!

  • You're right. It was the actor Ted Knight from the movie "Caddyshack" and "The Mary Tyler Moore show".

  • that comment under this is funny. i too watched this and the live action show, thanks for posting.

  • This is how I like my saturday morning cartoons to start.... With images of persons (apes?) crucified upside down!

  • What a blast from the past! I was so young then, but I totally remember this. Very cool.
