  • @stonegrooved I agree the slower version has much more passion.

  • wonderful song . . . .

  • One of his best songs , love this love him, miss him already. RIP.

  • A wonderful song. RIP Gerry!

  • Hey, all you Irishers and Britishers, cant you guys just listen to good music? This song was a hit back here in Cameroon (know where it is found?) and our secondary school life in the 70's were modelled on guys like Gerry and Otis Redding.

  • Were they on the Chrysilys lable I remember having an Album of theirs in my collection, Connolly did a few funny numbers If memory serves me right.

  • All minorities are subjected to usurpation. Complainers should see this.

    Tom

    Thank you.

  • @telsport

  • I sure wish the original Stealers Wheel would reform. Songs like this were wonderful, and the classic lineup of Rafferty, Egan, Pilnick, Grosvenor, Coombes and DeLisle Harper (or Williams) was the best. Shame they never toured the States. Listening to SW made me go out and search for that Humblebums classic. Funny how Gerry's partner in that duo became much more famous in the states than he did - Billy Connolly!

  • My nearest(ish) neighbour is called Gerry Rafferty here in Ireland, it's a pretty common name in the North of Ireland (Gerry himself is of Irish descent, as was Joe Egan and Billy Connelly).

Although it would be nice if Alan is related to Gerry...

So fess up AlanRafferty are you Gerry's cousin/brother/uncle/nephew????

  • @lukessummer: Hello Luke, I am on a forum with Alan, and he is indeed a relative (first cousin, if I'm correct) of Gerry.

  • @lukessummer Thought they were scottish?

  • @edzick917

They are indeed Scottish, I was merely pointing out to another youtuber that the name Rafferty ( and indeed Connolly and Egan ) are very common names here in Ireland.

Also, because of the centuries of immigration back and forth between the North of Ireland and Scotland ( both Catholic and Protestant ) practically every single person in Donegal has relations in Scotland.

  • @lukessummerguitar

Anyway, once an ace like Gerry puts something out it becomes human patrimony. Here in Cameroon, that's in Africa, we do not want to Know whether late Gerry was Scottish, Irish, Pygmy or Brazilian: he has played good music - period.

That is what makes us human beings.

Gerry we shall miss you. RIP

    Saidou, from Yaounde Cameroon.

  • @lukessummerguitar very true

  • @rockon1898 sadly this will never happen now, at least not with Gerry...

  • @rockon1898 Well now that will never happen for sure. RIP Gerry and thank you for all beautiful songs like this one.

  • There's a really good version of this on the Ferguslie Park album by Stealers Wheel which features more polished harmonised vocals and steel guiar

  • Yes, you are right (That was the first version I heard year's ago) it is on youtube as well.

  • His dad was indeed born on Steamboat Row near Airdrie in Scotland, and the lyrics tell the story of his dad working there. Check out Mary Skeffington, also available on youtube which is a song he wrote for his mum shortly after his dad had died. Another fantastic track.....

  • I have always loved the song "Mary Skeffington", I wish that Gerry had gone back to this type of song writing later in his career.

  • Try searching Xavier and Honor, from his 2000 album, Another World. It's probably the closest he's come to getting back to that kind of track. Apart from Matties Rag on the City to City album, which I think is one of the best things he ever did.....

  • Say Alan, are you related to Gerry? If you are...

Please tell him an American fan loved his early work and of course Stealers Wheel too.

  • Simply a great Song!!!!!!!!!

  • Just had a listen to "Wond'ring Again" on your channel...what a fantastic piece of song writing...

I went through a mad Jethro Tull phase in the late 80's and bought everything they had recorded!!!...

    Always loved "One Brown Mouse"...

  • Where has this song been all of my life? It's a beautiful piece.

  • Yes, fantastic little song indeed.

  • Ooh I've been waiting on this for ages. Thanks for posting.

  • It's a fantastic little song, isn't it?.

  • In light of the recent troubles at the church, maybe you should make a vid using another Stealer's Wheel song lyric, "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right....here I am stuck in the middle with you."
