If you haven't watched the phantom menace Darth Maul's double sided lightsaber in the movie could be used on one side. The only problem is that Maul's lightsaber is longer than a usual one. On the first battle of Darth Maul and Qui-gon Jinn, He only used one side. But in this situation, He'd use both sides.
