"it looks like a Lotus a little bit"! "Every panel is different"!! Yeah like the series 2 Elise has different panels from the S1!! It's a Lotus with an electric engine
Wow thanks for commenting on this when I posted it months ago. I had a deposit down on a Launch Edition model. I dropped my reservation and moved it over to the Fisker Karma. It's not as fast as the Tesla - but it's a sedan and that would be more practical for me. #946 on the Fisker Karma list.
Yes it will. There's not a great deal of difference between a steam engine and an internal combustion engine. Just look at that motor, tiny, efficient, cheap, powerful and clean and just one moving part. Amazing. With respect, anyone who can't see that as the future must be blind.
That's just what the steam engine enthusiasts said when the diesel came along! What the ship owners said when the first planes came along. It will inevitably go main stream because it is so pure of design. Why waste energy transfering reciprical motion into rotary motion when you don't have to!
Did i just hear that correctly? At 1:10 when the camera man states that it's not a very big motor for a car that'll do 145mph, does the sales rep correct him and say it does 245mph?! Surely not! hey, even if it does do 145mph, thats more than double the limit in the UK. I think I'm going to sell my CLK55 AMG and get one of these.
With that amount of power, and guessing its drag coefficient to be .32 and frontal area to be 19 feet square, and given 2600 lbs weight and 0.012 coefficient of rolling resistance for the sticky racing tires, assuming 10% driveline losses, this would be enough power to take it over 160 mph, if it had the gearing for it. Unfortunately, it's geared for 130 mph, limited by the max RPM of the 3-phase 4-pole asynchronous AC induction motor.
I think really we are all missing the point here..What we have here is a really cool looking fast electic car with 200 mile range, not a hint of a milk float in sight..Now if charging can be reduced from 3.5 to say 1 hour at a solar station{A stop for lunch}what reason would there be not to want one?
Tesla's next car will be cheaper and more practical. Lithium Ion batteries may currently be fairly expensive, but new technology and economy of scale will bring it down.
I find it a bit dissapointing that even the person who was telling him about it was getting her facts wrong. It's designed by Tesla Motors, using some of Lotus's technology, assembled at Lotus in Britain for an American only market (at the moment). It won't come out in Britain for a while yet, but when it does, rest assured that Lotus will still be building it.
its designed by lotus!, it does 130mph not 145mph, it doesnt use lotus technology, only the designe is lotus telsa did all the electrics, they are built in america not the uk, there going on sale in the uk in 2008... do your research you muppet
I worked for them. I know exactly what the policy was. It DOES use Lotus technology, the bodywork is designed by Lotus engineering but Tesla did design all the electronics. They are built in the UK (I was with the guys building them at the Hethel factory!) and they are not going on sale in the UK for at least a few years.
Where you got your information from, I have no idea, but I think mine is more reliable! I even drove it round the Lotus test track. Do not doubt my "research"!
Hahaha. I did work for them. And if you don't believe me then I actually don't give a shit. It just annoys me when people give totally WRONG information on something which they don't know anything about. And if you want proof that 3/6 of your facts were wrong, just go to the official website teslamotors dot com - it's all there!
Whether you work for them or not, but the facts you listed were correct, the company of this car is Tesla and they just had Lotus to build it for them. Its funny how its out for sale in the US first and not avaliable for UK yet when its built by the UK. Thanks for setting things straight, I hate people who post "facts" that are poorly researched.
I'm afraid it hasn't been designed for a British market and regulations, so there would have to be quite a few adaptions (not to mention the right hand drive thing) before it could possibly be released here. Pity. Its such a lovely car.
stopcrazypp: Actually, the car is not being built BY Lotus. Tesla is building it but they've subcontracted Lotus' plant for their line. Tesla is supplying the technology, Lotus is renting out their plant. Tesla is also building a plant in NM so that they can bring 100% of the production domestic, likely for their midsize and economy models only.. I don't know if they will shift the high end model there.
dreadful color, very promising car. too expensive because of the overpriced lithium so it wont make a dent in the car market but the inspiration of it will.
the motor size alone is a white glove slap in the face of all that went before. I wrote JB Straubel about an electric prosche he once made and turns out he's CTO of Tesla. we talked back and forth but when I suggested they contact EEStor he never replied again....
I believe the color is what Tesla call "Glacier Blue". No, it wouldn't be my choice either, but I have heard from at least one person who likes it. I would go for the bright orange myself. As for EEStor, many are watching to see if they can pull a rabbit out of their hat. It's not proven yet.
I talked to ZENN motors of canada which claim to have visited EEStor and have a deal in place with them. I quote 'they came back smiling from the visit'. could still die on us because the idiots are stupid enough to believe in secrecy but there are some good indications at least. And I take JBs clam performance to mean they are looking into it already.
Uh? It smokes almost any european car other than the Veyron, it does so without consuming a drop of oil, it is silent and infinitely more reliable than any other European, American or Japanese car. And the styling is clearly european top notch designed by Lotus. What part does suck in your illustrated opinion?
I think it's a great car, and can't wait to see it properly on sale in the UK. It would be nice to think Lotus might assemble the right hand drive models.

This car is made in Hethel, Norfolk, England to be exact.
So, parts made in the far east, shipped to England, car assembled and shipped to USA. Sounds like a lot of pollution and oil needed to do all that.
