  • only in the 90s would a comic writer who isnt stan lee appear on national tv

  • Rob may not be one of the great artists of our time, but he's got an eye for action and storytelling that puts lie to the notion that he "sucks." His anatomy and costume design DO, indeed, leave something to be desired but he has other redeeming values and really has just become an easy target for the relentlessly negative elements of the comics press and fandom.

  • Youngblood #1.....one of the few comics, along with X-Men #1, that can be found in every comic shop's 25 cent bin. I do have to admit that I liked his work on New Mutants, however.

  • @aagranata hindsight is always 20/20 lol

  • never knew he created deadpool, but i always wondered why i hated the character

  • Comment removed

  • It's funny he looks so boyish and nervous and i can imagine he would rather talk about his comic than Marvel's but hey it's all good publicity !

  • @curefreak Well, if you were on there would you want to talk about some company you used to work for or the one you started and work with now?

  • @88riddlemethis I def agree i would have preferred Dennis talk more about Liefelds comic (even tho i am not a fan)but it's hard to make jokes about characters noone is familiar with

  • I do love Cable and Deadpool though

  • Lol Youngblood was a best seller

  • Rob Liefield is the one biggest assholes ever the only good he did was help make Deadpool but he did swipe Spiderman 2 do that

  • If you want an illustrator that actually deserves the amount of credit this joker gets then look at Edurardo Risso (100 Bullets). His linework is pretty linier but it's brilliant how he boarders between realistic to cartoony. That and he actually takes care with his compositions and dosen't say 'screw it' like Liefeld obviously does.

Risso really is somebody to learn from.

  • It isn't cool to hate Rob Liefeld. It's just logical and sane. The guy is a hack idiot. He actually said that comic book origin stories should be in "issue half" because "it's boring to have them in issue 1." He's a living breathing Spinal Tap joke and he doesn't even know it.

I loved Dennis Miller Live though, one of my favorite shows of all time. Can't blame him for having Liefeld on anyway, the guy was huge in the 90s.

  • It's not cool nor hip to hate Liefeld. I don't understand the vitriol. Kudos to Lief for doing something amazing and making a sweet amount of cash doing it.

  • He can create some interesing characters like Deadpool but his art so so riddled with flaws it's rediculous.

  • Why does everyone hate Rob Liefeld, his anatomy isn't very realistic true, but he created Deadpool and that makes him cool enough for me.

  • @TheEmoticonMaster He only created the look of Deadpool... Deadpool only gain his personalty that we all know and love after good and talented writers started to work on him. Before then Deadpool was just a run of the mile Youngblood like character with little or no personalty. I Wouldn't give Rob Liefeld that much credit. The only other character he made that is still truly being used is Cable.

  • @Se7enBeatleofDoom Well nothing's wrong with that, Cable is cool, but none the less I still don't think he's that bad and I respect him and all the founders of Image for they did.

  • @TheEmoticonMaster And Deadpool is one of the hottest characters in the Marvel Uni right now guess he got at least one thing right, eh?

  • @TheEmoticonMaster To be fair its not quite the same character

  • just sayin', Joe Quesada isnt any better

  • If Rob Liefeld always maintains this professional demeanor, then it may explain somewhat of why he has a job.

Honestly his work was revolutionary at the time. It just hasn't aged well because he went to far. Just because you CAN include gratuitous blood and sex in a comic doesn't mean you should.

Likewise on the art. Yeah it was not up to the standards of the industry, but it was also unlike any other seen at the time so people looked past it for a while.

Honestly, I don't hate as much anymore.

  • he drew Captain America with a rediculous chest size and his women seem to be a bit too thin on the stomach and waist area...

probably the most overrated artist of all time.

  • @mechaart I agree that his comics may have been over hyped back in the 90's, but I think nowadays he is over criticized.

  • @conquerlord1 Yea no need to go all psycho angry and attack me personally just because I like something you don't like. Get a life.

  • I heard they rebooted Youngblood in 2007-2008 not sure which and it was written by Joe Casey. I wonder how it performed

  • you know I hate liefield's work with a vengeance but he actually seems like a nice guy. he seems like the kind of guy I could chat with while drinking some cofee.

  • @tehblackarachnid btw yes I have read his twitter posts and some of them are hilarious

  • Rob Liefeld kicks butt! His art style & creations will carry on threw time long afters these haters are gone.

  • ITS GREAT TO SEE COMICS MAKING ITS POPULARITY MARK IN LINE WITH MANGA AND ANIME.but too bad all that money they made for Marvel and DC gets pissed away on the all twenty different batman/superman/ jojoman titles and wot not.

MARVEL doesnt have serious plans to make the their styles staples in the industry but at least they did their part. got the attention and moved past it.

  • @venusprojection The Bendis line made me laugh... "squirted"

  • @CrashLanden It's because a comic book critic called Linkara regularly makes fun of Liefeld.

  • @venusprojection You want to know something worse than Bendis? Look at Kyle Baker's Deadpool Max series... if you dare. The artwork is so bad it's actually nauseating. And the story sucks as much as the art.

  • @Cellmate412162 LoL. No thanks I don't believe in committing suicide!

  • @venusprojection @CrashLanden It's because a comic book critic called Linkara regularly makes fun of Liefeld. I kind of like Liefeld stuff but I think it's mostly nostalgia. I definitely wouldn't say it's "good" per se

  • @WorkSucksMedia Don't think that I was taking sides. I just found the choice of words funny in a juvenile way. It doesn't mean I agree. If I didn't like Liefeld I wouldn't have posted this video. Is he the greatest artist ever?... Uh, no. But I don't think Linkara or whoever is the reason why he gets so much negativity going his way.

  • @WorkSucksMedia For better or worse if you see a Liefeld cover you know who did it right off the bat he has his own style unlike 85-90% of comic book artists.

  • @venusprojection I gotta agree Bendis is the worst fucking writer ever.

Sure Rob cant draw but he never raped an entire universe

  • This was back in 1993 or 1994. Maybe 1993 at most. He sucked balls man!!!

  • Jesus, Rob was only 24 years old back then? Figured he was much, much older when he shit out Youngblood.

  • I use all my old copies of Youngblood #1 as toilet paper now, I just don't feel like they'd ever sell for 50k...

  • The worst part about Rob Liefeld isn't that he's a talentless hack who doesn't deserve a penny of all the money he's earned. The worst part is that he looks like one.

  • Liefeld, you're not an artist.

  • Poor audience.

  • Of course, after being exposed to Liefeld's comic, the entire studio audience developed a severe case of brain cancer and all were dead within 3 months of this taping.

    R.I.P. comic book dignity.

  • Really? Looking at Liefeld's work gave him a vibe from a previously existing character like Silver Surfer? Wow. Go figure...

  • Youngblood was written by a 24 year old? Gee, I never would have guessed.

  • Rob Sucks... his art is garbage.

  • Google "The 40 Worst Rob Liefeld Drawings" - hilarious but also proof of how awful and careless his "art" is. It's very frustrating that a guy like Liefeld could draw so terrible yet be so successful. It's clear in much of his work that he whipped them together, cut corners, and never stopped to correct any mistakes. Not to mention his total lack of business ethics.

  • My favorite Liefeld stuff was his New Mutants run.

I remember Saturday Night Live mocking Dennis Miller's show in a sketch called 'Cooking with Dennis Miller'. It was fun.

  • You know IMAGE was ...screw it he just said he did the whole thing story and artwork but later he blame the bad writing on his friend who he said wrote the Youngblood issue 1 Rob I liked your early work but you seem lost in this video.

  • I hope the 90's explode and die for giving Rob Liefeld and Dennis Miller a job.

  • how did todd mcfarlane ever associate with this loser?

  • @IloveOtherPplsMsry Because McFarlane wanted to see his mistakes so he can do better than Liefeld. Liefeld is such a tool. But, if McFarlane would go with Image Comics, he would make his awesome character Spawn. So, it sold more than Liefeld's shit.

  • @xxpandamidknightxx not anymore now mcfarlane's all about toys and shit, i'm pretty sure he's lost all interest comics now

  • Damn, Miller really knew his stuff.

Nice to see this, I remember when the Image stuff first hit it really was like a group of celebrities.

  • How much DOES the first Youngblooad sell for?

  • @iDraw3G 2.50...the cover price. It sold a boatload of copies...so there are so many in print they are all worthless. Most of the comics in the 90s (when I collected them) are worthless since they were the height of popularity then. More popular = more comics printed = less value.

  • Like it or not, this guys was an amazing talent. His artwork started a genre of sorts... long legs and lots of guns. Apparently a lot of people liked it... including myself. Nobody could ever draw Cable or Deadpool like this guy.

  • Not really into his 90's work. And even he admitted it himself. Really, no one did, but over years, especially during this year he's actually doing much better in his art. Everything seems a bit more proportionate now than it did.

  • Although his style had a lot of 'odd' things in them, (such as oversized chest muscles) I always was intruiged by his style. I found and still find his details great. It was like over the top, but over the top in it's own original way.

  • He does fail at drawing, but his drawings are so bad that they are hilarious.

  • We need Liefeld. Like it or not. I always appreciate his "status" and wish he'd produce more work

  • why so he can give us more flipper feet

  • yep, LOL. he really angers fanboys and other creators.

  • rob Liefeld was my idol. Watching this brings me back!! X Force!!!

  • His art aside, Liefeld seems seems like a nice person

  • What I think people are forgetting is that hes one the absolute worst swipers in the history of comics.

  • Pouches pouches pouches pouches pouches EXTREME pouches pouches pouches pouches BLOOD EXTREME MUSCLES Pouches.

  • This guy fails at drawing comics.

  • Wtf why?

  • I think what people are forgetting is that he was 24 in this interview, at 24, he was a co-director of a new company and principal of his own studio, that's a lot of pressure to put on someone so young. He didnt give himself the chance to hone his craft because he was drowning under the adulation of kids throughout the 90s. He produced good stuff, very of its time but thats what made the 90s comics boom fun. Without it, we may not have comics so widely recognized in other forms of media.

  • @rushaholic

I really like Rob's early Marvel work. He just got worse and worse as business ventures took him away from drawing. It's also mind-boggling to think that Image was outselling Marvel and DC at one time! It was a historical moment for the industry, no doubt. Rumor has it that Rob made about $20 million during Image's heyday.

  • ive always based my opinions of people on facts. HEs rich, young and does what he loves for a living. one mans trashs is another mans treasure. in other words, if YOU dont like his work (his comic sales confirms) MAJORITY OF THE WORLD DOES. i wish rob all the luck in the world and any other artists.

  • thats using a popular phrase completely out of context.

one mans trash is another mans treasure refers to what one person no longer wants/needs could be used by someone else. for example. things you find at a yard sale.

if some one doesn't like rob liefeld or his work, its merely just a matter of opinion.

  • any artist that can get attention on comics like this deserves respect

  • well, at this time comic artists were more high profile, not quite superstars.

I wish they still got this attention. Would be more interesting than the generic actors and musicians that blight talkshows today :)

  • @StyleSessions

This was still during the comics/collectibles speculation boom, before the bubble burst in 1994. Popular titles were routinely selling close to a million copies a month (they sell about 150,000 a month now). Superhero movies had just hit it big in Hollywood, mainstream exposure was at an all-time high, etc....

Comic book writing was still catering strictly to kids at the time, so the hot artists became the obvious superstars of the industry.

  • (snicker) 'kind of inspired'

  • Most of all you guys are judging his old art, not his new art. He has evolved as an artist and a writer. Just stop hatin on him so much. His art at the time was what all you fan boys were goin crazy over, but when it became poplular to diss him, you jumped on board. Sheep.

  • i agree. His writing is awful at best. He doesn't know how to draw feet flat on the floor, and for being so successful he is a considerably bad artist.

  • Youngblood #1's the worst book ever written.

  • @CosmoShidan Wrong. The Twilight series is worse than Youngblood. At least Youngblood is so bad it's hilarious. I have 4 of its issues for kicks & crackups. But Twilight breaks every rule in the vampire handbook and is not entertaining. Liefeld's art can cure anyone from "sparkling vampires".

  • i have so much respect for rob but i dnt understand why he isnt even a quarter of what jim lee was and he got so much more attention

  • Why does everyone wish Rob Liefeld was dead??

  • his artwork is a joke and he is part of a generation of artists who nearly caused the entire comic book industry to completely implode upon itself.

There's also that whole corruption thing he had with Image, but that may be a rumor.

  • its a rumor and also think back to the ninties unless ur a wierdo(no offense) he rocked back then ofcourse looking back at it now it suck and he is infact the only artist tht has not progressed over 20 years but hes self taught he deserves respect kinda.

  • I actually think his art today is better than back then, although that's not saying much.

Just because someoen is self-taught does not mean he should be respected. The art itself is what is important. I could say that Fred Durst is a self-taught singer.

  • @DodgerRiley

And still, it's funny that Miller is unfamiliar with the idea of heroes getting out of bed with a woman. Liefeld, as flawed his ideas and executions are, helped push the industry forward.

  • @TheMobra He pushed industry forward only financially. Quality of art went backward. Comics became more about collecting alt. covers rather than making new stories. I'm sure we all have the first issue of X-Force in hopes it would collect in value. And when we read it, we can't believe we ever liked anything so bad.

  • @DodgerRiley Why is it a joke? What's wrong with it? Looks great to me. a little blocky, but it's still good.

  • @88riddlemethis For one thing, how many pockets does a superhero need? You nver see them reach into them for anything. Muscles are completely disporportionate. Gun toting muscle men and.....that's pretty much all he draws now that i think about it. His "muscular" characters actually just look fat. He never learned how to draw human anatomy and it is painfully obvious....need i go on?

  • @DodgerRiley Lol, no, no. I see where you are coming from. I'm not defending the guy, I'm not a real big fan myself, but I just don't see anything wrong with his art ... well, at least until now.

  • @DodgerRiley

Dude, he is part of a generation of artists who made the comic book industry + toys + cartoons. Your 33 thumbs ups are utter failures.

  • @Nexstarcrazyness That's like saying Fred Durst made rap music. Like Durst, Liefeld was popular during a time period when the audience had very low quality in taste. I mean, seriously, look at his costumes he designed. What do they symbolize to you? any of them.

  • cool video

  • I like how Dennis says he's getting a Silver Surfer vibe off one of the image guys in the comic. That's pretty much because a lot of those guys were total rip offs. Liefield... what's to be said? He's not the most original guy on the planet. I still like Miller, but he was much funnier then than now . There was a time he was absolutely hilarious and I never missed his HBO show back in the day.

  • Linkara really panned the first issue of Youngblood.

  • Linkara panns a lot of Liefeld's works. Though "Triple L" does have a love/hate relationship for Rob Liefeld.

  • Awesome to see Miller is a comicgeek!!

  • See Also: the Stan Lee On Dennis Miller I've got posted.... Dennis Miller is a pop culture freak.....

  • great upload, man comics should get more outside plublicity. i dont care what you guys say, if people can praise Ed McGuinness blocky work then theyre shouldnt be any conplaints about rob leifields work. for what it is it sure is intertianing and a lot better than you could ever do.

  • VERY GOOD UPLOAD!!!

  • I actually thought he was a better artist back then.... His stuff now really reeks of " I'm lazy." I don't know I really enjoyed his comics back then, and I think the only one who destroyed his "stardom" was himself.

  • Karl Kesel was the inker who heavily 'repaired' his artwork., said that the guy was learning when he came to DC/ Marvel, but he let fame get to him.

It's bad seeing someone who has no talent whatsoever, but it is worse to see someone who wasted their talent. Liefeld wasted his, and could have learned so much more from a decent bridgman or Loomis book.

  • agreed on the fact that he let the fame get to him, but for me his work turned to cheese after youngblood 6...... and I know Karl Kesel wasn't working with him then...

  • Yeah. He got onto the industry so young because he had real raw talent... But there wasn't anyone around him to actually tell him off for his mistakes so he kept developing his artistic skills in the wrong direction.

Yep, he let his fame get to him. And it's tragic. He could have actually been much better. "Spare the rod and spoil the child", how true.

  • I think his artwork is great and always have. Not only that but I think the superheroes he came up with was also great. Im a real old school comic book fan and I love old comics and dont care much for the newer stuff. But Rob is still my favorite comic book maker.

  • I respect your opinion, but Rob Liefeld is by no means old school. He's the complete opposite. The fact that you love his art and characters is cool though.

  • Yes I know he is not old school I was just saying that I love older comics and dont care at all for the new stuff. The newest comics I have is the civil war stuff and they turned out ok. But I love the comics from the late 70's and mostly the 80's and early 90's stuff that is my favorite year span of art/story that I love the most. Now I do also like the 60's stuff as well but some of it can be cheesy

  • Yeah I'm really into the 70s stuff myself. Liefeld represents the one era of comics, I really hated, but I still respect his work.

  • although his art sucks he has a good work ethic

  • Not really. After so many Youngblood issues came out, he relaunched it again, and again, and again. His work never improved and the guy is incredibly lazy. Look at all of his titles where he did one issue and nothing more after that, then went onto another series. He's kind of a joke in the comic book community.

Great upload. And I agree wth Hellhound30x, he has nobody to blame for his destruction but himself.

  • "Work ethic"

What? If that was true Youngblood would probably have stayed as popular as it started. It took him years to complete the first initial run of the series. Every series he did with Image ran behind schedule.

I have no hate for Liefield ( actually liked him when I was young) ,but his work ethic helped to oust him out of Image and bring down Extreme studios.

  • You know, if nothing else his art looks fun and it seems like he enjoys what he's doing. So...y'know. He makes a living doing what he loves.

  • cool

  • Look how young he is. He looks like he just came out of high school.

  • That was awesome! Go, Rob!!! Good times.
