Do not need to end to spend hundreds of dollars on a hammock. I have been hammock camping for over a decade with my cheap parachute setup. I just altered it a bit added some things here and there and its every bit as good as a Hennessey for petes sake.
My Hennessey can be a bit tricky in the cold and in the wind. It is best to sling it low to the ground in low temps and build up a windbreak with conifer branches. Also, the wind-sway of trees during a storm can be a bit exciting, especially when trees crash nearby while you are tied to them. I always tie to trees in a clearing to avoid this risk. With a bit of ingenuity you can far exceed the comfort of more traditional survival gear.
I've hung at 21 degF in Western Mountaineering 20 deg. bag, and 2 pads. No other specia measures except that I stake the tarp tight to the hammock..
I have the asym tarp. Wife has the hex. We've stayed dry through many storms . For keeping dry, the major difference between the two tarps is the care one needs to take in positioning them. The hex is so big, ykou'd have to work at getting wet. With the Asym, take the time to be sure it is perfectly centered fore and aft over the hammock
I've used my Hennessy exclusively on many backpacking trips now. Its really is the only way to go. Cold weather can be a little tricky,but with a good bag its really not much of an issue. I got the larger rain tarp and I must say its also impressive. Had a trip with a ton of rain and we stayed warm and dry under the Hennessy. Cooked and had a nice little fire as well! Its the only way I'll backpack now.
It's not as easy as in a tent, but not impossible either. Pull it up the legs. Lift the rear and pull it as far up the chest as you can. Sit up & pull it over the head.
I am curious to know how that velcro on the bottom holds up? Does it keept bugs/insects out? Also, I've heard some people say that the mosquito's can nip at you through the bottom, does that happen with this? I am mainly concerned with the velcro bottom, that just does not seem like it would seal very well.
The velcro seems to hold up fine. It closes automatically and completely when you get in, but you have to close it manually when you get out. It's easy to forget, so you just have to form a habit of turning around and closing it.
I'm sure skeeters can bite through the bottom, especially of the hyperlight which is very thin material. It hasn't been a problem for me because I always sleep on a cut down Wal-Mart pad which is necessary for insulation.
sounds great lisaj. Do you have pictures, a video perhaps? What's it weigh? Does it have a bug net? Tarp?

Which 2 pads did you use?

Air currents under hammock cools sleeping bag, Hammocks are colder than a sleeping bag & pad on the ground, or a tent.
Hennessy makes a 4 season model with insulation pad and a fly that reaches farther down to the ground, also available as an add-on.
If cold is main problem get a tent.
If lying on hard ground is main problem use a hammock.
Tents = more privacy.
Hammocks allow you to sit on like a chair (untie one side rope) while you get dressed, cook, read, you can't do that with a tent

How hard is it to get into a sleeping bag in the Hennessy Hammock?

Google "HISTORY OF HENNESSY HAMMOCK MANUFACTURING" to see Hennessy's statement about their manufacturing in the US, Canada and China.
