A socio-political background of 1980's. The girl in the story was akin to denying her native Taiwan heritage. Authoritarian Taiwanese govt mostly Mandarin speakers of mainland Chinese origin governing over majority of Fujianese natives. After the death of Generalisimo Chiang was the renaissance of Taiwanese liberation. The finale song culminates in native pride - hence the hybrid of Fujianese and Mandarin lyrics. 1988 Taiwan had their first native President.
