  • Gee she's pretty...and she sings like an angel...she's gorgeous in all ways!

  • A travesty. Any anus can sing Opera with a mic right in their face and a total disregard for phrasing and breathing. Go back to Lloyd Webber...

  • Pięknie !

  • She hits the right notes and has a nice vocal quality. Talented indeed. But she sounds the same in every song -- like it's all the same happy emotion. This is supposed to be a very dramatic piece, and she sings it like she's putting on makeup. If she works on conveying emotion in her voice instead of just sounding sweet and cute, then she'll be all set to sing works like this.

  • @SickMouth Exactly. This is an aria in which a girl is threatening to throw herself in a river and commit suicide if she can't marry the boy she loves. It definitely shouldn't be sung "sweet and cute". Listen to Ruth Ann Swenson's version or that of Montserrat Caballe, to hear this aria sung correctly.

  • @arpeggio1358

Technically, there is no "correct" way to sing an aria. It all depends on the listener's taste. Like, there is no right way to paint a painting, or carve a sculpture. And if you don't like her singing this song, why are you commenting on it?

  • @bamahornplayer if you sing in an opera, there is a corredt way to sing. I'm aware that HW isn't an opera singer, but she should look at the English translation and sing it with the proper emotion that goes along with the words. I'm commenting because all opinions are welcome on YT, even if there are people who police certain singers' video sites and try to drive away anyone who disagrees with them.

  • @arpeggio1358 Bettter yet, listen to Maria Callas

  • @drz535 Sorry, I'm not a Callas fan. I much prefer Ruth Ann Swenson's version of this aria or that of Montserrat Caballe.

  • I like this version, I feel like listening to a nightingale. Her voice may not as deep or big as others (I dunno the term for that) but this is so good :-)

  • Hi.

How can you describe "O Mio Bambino Caro", Giacomo Puccini and Hayley Westenra.? One word - DIVINE. Thank You for your video

    Grig

  • beautiful :) her voice is so innocent and pure, like the group celtic women, and like christine daae (forgive my spelling) in the phantom of the opera

  • It's sung very well and she has great technique, however, her voice isn't strong enough for operatic vocals. If she had a bit of a beefier tone, it'd be sublime.

  • her voice seems like, half trained. I see high schoolers sing better than this.

  • wow , great upload

  • Pitch freakin' perfect! She's like a human instrument. Its like a lute cape to life and found emotion in her throat.

  • beautiful!! i love this song so much! :) Please watch my video of me singing this song at 14 years old!

  • This is beautiful, but I think she is to young for the song.

I hate to see her sing to hard of stuff and it ruin her voice for the future.

  • @graciesings4u I don't think she's too young, she's just not singing it operatically. Her interpretation of this Puccini aria is grossly pop-ish. I sang this when I was 17 and I learned it in a classical setting, so my recording sounds totally different. It's not that she isn't capable at this age of sounding like an actual opera singer, she just didn't learn it with operatic technique. The way she is singing it doesnt seem like it would harm her voice, because she is singing it lightly.

  • prefer it to Brightman's version

  • she has a beutful voice:)

  • Terrible

  • This is the Best Version of this song that I've ever heard. Thank You for posting this beautiful, beautiful performance. It is one of my favorite videos on YouTube, EVER.

  • What a beautiful clear voice!

  • Good but not actually "operatic"

  • Hayley has a fabulous voice, and her version of this song is excellent - very, very close to the very best. I am a big fan of hayley and she has sung other songs where I feel she is the very best. As for singing coaches - who wins tournaments, the coaches or the artists?

  • She has a nice voice, but is just not an opera singer. There is no fullness or quality to her voice. It's just a nice voice. She is nasal in this song. She seems like she'd be a very nice person though and she is very modest and tha accounts for a lot. Great image!!! No one will ever sing this song like Renee Fleming. Now there is a true opera singer with a BEAUTIFUL voice!!!!"

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

the whole soprano they sing this 'expensive babbino caro', however Hayley Westenra is the migiore of everybody, it has a ringing voice and it is understood well the words

  • @caviccun

  • jim, if you find it hard to listen to music if tones are not exactly at the "right" frequency, it got nothing to do with you having a pitch perfect curse, but because you're struggling with mental psycosis that sais all tones must be at certain frequency, which is all an arbitary choice from the begin with when desided how to divide the octaves into notes. Take it from one that can differ frequencies down to one hertz from many years of work in analog data communication. Get yourself a shrink.

  • It really doesn't make any difference what Puccini thought of singers or who should do this piece or how. In this case the singer is greater than the composer, and if she sais this is to be interpreted as an innocent girl who went behind her father's back and feels sorry about it, all we can do is to re-write the history. I feel sorry for individuals who got too much wax in their ears to appreciate a feminine singer if weight is below 300 pounds and frequencies above the same number.

  • Hayley Westenra is greater than Puccini? Hahaha I doubt that very much. What's wrong with you? :)

  • elliez, Giacomo Puccini's compositions are musically just about as advanced as psalms, so how difficult can it be to get to my conclusion?

  • I find it ironic to read people who self proclaims themselves as "singing coach" or "pitch perfect" seems to think they know better than everyone else, including some of the finest sopranos and coaches in the entire world. You people do know that she was first discovered because she herself was pitch perfect, not to mention that she was personally trained by Malvina Major. You think all these people just failed to notice her, in your opinions, flawed voice?

  • grecko3, thats a very good point.

  • @grecko3 She completely missed the point of the song! The style is COMPLETELY WRONG!

Sure, she has a pretty voice. But she is no opera singer.

Puccini is rolling in his grave.

  • @stefunny93 I agree completely, but the pop opera fans can't tell the difference between popera and opera...and they think opera fans are just a bunch of snobs.

  • @grecko3 She has a nice voice, she simply doesn't have an operatic voice. She should stick to pop music. There's nothing wrong with being a pop or pop opera singer. This type of singer just shouldn't be confused with actual opera singers. Nobody disputes the fact that Westenra has talent.

  • I see all the technicians have a problem with true perfection. There has never been another believable version of this song. This is what Puccini intended. A little girl singing to her father not a spent middle aged diva trying to play a little girl.

  • Puccini knew quite well WHO and WHAT he was writing this for.....a mellifluous, gorgeously mature opera voice...as that was understood in his day. Whether it was a case of the 'fat lady singing' really didn't matter. His reality wasn't verisimilitude, but a deeper exploration of the soul only deliverable by a weightier voice.

  • Well, she certainly not have an ordinary voice. As an operasinger composer myself I´ve heard so many singers. She is one of the best singers I´ve heard. She is flawless.99 percent of the votes can´t be wrong. I simply don´t understand that you as a vocalcoach can´t hear her potential.

  • beautiful voice!!!!!! :D

  • the emotion there is brilliant Hayley is my faverioute singer and has been for years

  • Maybe that's just the way she wanted to interpret it... but I dunno I like Carmen Monarcha's version... I wonder what how she would perform that song from Elfen Lied/ Lilium or Lament of the Highborne... does anybody know if she speaks the dialects of the high elves???

  • i just don't get this girl's success at all! Such an ordinary little voice. Any class in any school ANYWHERE will have a girl who can sing like this. And the interval jumps in this song are just too challenging for her. God the public are soeasily fooled!

  • The same comparison can be made with practically every successful singer, especially in pop music, and much more truly with others than with Hayley.

How do you explain the 25 year career of Madonna or Stevie Nicks (40 years?) or any of the rest of them.

  • im with you on this - theres very little line and the high notes arent connected with the rest of the voice - the italian isnt cclear and the sound isnt forward... shes good at some of her other stuff but she ought to leave this sort of thing to bigger voices

    x

  • The high notes are perfect..oh,you made a comment implying you know lots about singing..but to singers like myself you made it clear that you,in fact, know nothing..

  • Those who can't sing coach the true definition of unremarkable.

  • The notes are there - the technique is flawed. I think if the technique were right - which it isn't, agreed - she'd be more a coloratura than a dramatic soprano. But she needs far better tessatura, a more flowing line, and breath support. Would also help if the voice were brought more forward. Nevertheless, I disagree about the basic voice. There's good material there, and the top, though disconnected, is bell-clear and smack in the middle of the note.

  • the high pitched notes are everything but not bell-clear!!!! watch performances of sumi jo. SHE has got a crystal clear voice. but not this girl here

  • jimdivax:

    Your are the fool!

You need to grow some ears.

  • Oh,what a pathetic little creature you are..obviously tone deaf as well:)..

  • She has a very sweet voice and holds her pitch very well. Nice rendition of this classic Puccino aria. However I think Kiri Te Kanawa and Maria Callas truely know how to sing this piece, they move me to tears!

  • Okay, I will admit that I'm half asleep, but I thought she was, like, an angel or something... hehehe... for a few seconds... -dozes off-

  • Seems like a couple of opera snobs feel they have too post disparaging comments on every thread, smacks of jealousy.

  • Love Hayley's voice. Have all her albums, and she relaxes me any time I play them.

  • This is nice, but she hesitates too much I think before she hits the high notes. /: She's an angelic singer, for sure. But she's much better in songs such as Wuthering Heights, Scarborough Fair, Pokare Ana etc. (: This was good, but seemed too forced to me.

  • To LittleRusalochka: Thanks for the lyrics in both languages. It's good to know what this song is about because it allows me to see which emotions singers try to communicate..

  • You're welcome!

  • Respect! awesome voice!!!

  • For music lovers, please listen to Jackie Downey on Youtube singing the same piece, recorded on a mobile phone !

  • Beautiful! ---dancewu(dot)net

  • And her diction could be a little better

  • Very pretty voice, but her high notes are so tiny and she does not possess the richness of an opera singer. However, she has a very pretty Celtic voice.

  • this is how it should be sung: by a young girl in love with a young boy. but in opera, there are no young girls singing lead roles, so this song is sung by middle-aged sopranos whose voices become the yardstick for this song.

  • b:This is one of the songs that a soprano classmate who sang in my first student concert I participated when I just graduated from a Hong Kong high school, it is something to do with the girl singing about "my beloved father" in English translation. I thought her young lyric soprano voice is beautiful and more appropreate than a "middle-aged" "yardstick for this song". By the way Puccini is my most favorite opera composer all my life. And still I do not know a word in Italian!--dancewu(dot)net

  • it is good. I love her voice, but she is no opera singer.

  • She doesn't need to be.. she's perfect like she is..

  • Hayley is superior to any opera (or classical) singer, living or not. Simply stunning voice.

  • I'm serious. No other singer has a voice like her, and i've heard alot of singers.

  • ok. It's all a matter of opinion. She has a pretty voice for Celtic music but with no business in real opera unless she had training to built that resonance.

  • To laurendaaephantom : why should everything turn around opera ? Opera is not the ultimate goal of life and an exceptional singer like her doesn't have to be confined in. I agree with sandwich, her voice is beautiful above all.. whatever she sings !

  • I'd have to highly disagree with you celly1406.

I think it is absolutely gorgeous!

    To each his own:)

  • yeah i agree, it is gorgeous.
