Great work! I'm curious to how you got such a smooth shadow around his mouth towards the end render. Maybe it's just something simple, but I'm looking round for new blender techniques for making good renders for things such as posters or wallpapers (for my Robot game). Excellent video you did a great job!

you select all the verts in edite mode and then go to your edit buttons panel then you can create new color and then you assign it to your verts

How do you tell it to keep the mesh symmetrical?

its simple really just add your basic shape delete one half of it then add a Mirror modifier to the mesh
