  • Great film but who won the game?

  • Once or twice the scrum forms and the ball is played before either the tackler or tackled player has got up!

  • I can see why they went to the play-the-ball rule. A scrum after every tackle makes this so slow and lumbering, not to mention taxing on the forwards.

  • This is great. It certainly shows how the evolution of rugby league was taking place. Plus I'm a Swinton fan, so good to see a clip of them playing over 100 years ago.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. For someone who is interested in the history of football codes and of rugby in particular this is a very fascinating piece of film. Anyone who also thinks so should check the other BFI clips like "Hunslet v Leeds 1901".
