This is great. It certainly shows how the evolution of rugby league was taking place. Plus I'm a Swinton fan, so good to see a clip of them playing over 100 years ago.
Thanks so much for posting this. For someone who is interested in the history of football codes and of rugby in particular this is a very fascinating piece of film. Anyone who also thinks so should check the other BFI clips like "Hunslet v Leeds 1901".

Once or twice the scrum forms and the ball is played before either the tackler or tackled player has got up!

I can see why they went to the play-the-ball rule. A scrum after every tackle makes this so slow and lumbering, not to mention taxing on the forwards.
