This for me is one of the very best covers of this paticular song but nowhere close to the original song as it is utterly soulless for me.
when Shawn played he gave a certain character to each and every note.
Every notes how fast or differently played, there was some sort of stroke; vibrato and bend ;which made it sound beautiful. I think Guthrie simply covered this song.
I admire him for playing but for those fools who are comparing this guy with Shawn Lane they are horribly ineffable
@TheXPrisoner And there are many guyz who play Shawn Lane good if those individual notes are not considered but those are certain techniques which makes Shawn sound so different.
Comparing this genius Guthrie to Shawn makes me want to call Guthrie "that thing"
Great vid ! I think each player in their own rights do things that the other couldn't do. And. That's what's gives them their own edge on how they use the guitar. A jam with these 2 would have been AMAZING !!
Music isn't about being the most complicated player or the fastest, it's about sounding good, and telling something. When you all speak, do you try to do so in the fastest and most complicated way? No, you try to say something meaningful. Same thing applies to music; Shawn was extremely fast, and he told us something with his music. Guthrie isn't so fast (who thought I would ever say that), but he definitely tells me a lot of things through his playing.
GUTHRIE DOES A REALLY BEAUTIFUL "INTERPETATION" OF SHAWNS SONG HERE, SHAWN ON THE OTHER HAND IS THE" MASTER", GUTHRIE STILL THE "GRASSHOPPER" SORRY JUST KEEPIN IT REAL, I KNEW SHAWN PERSONALLY AND TO TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY FACE TO FACE, EVEN THEN IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO BELIEVE WHAT YOU HAD JUST SEEN! HE WAS SIMPLY THE "BEST", BETTER THAN ALL THE REST, AND NOBODY DOES IT BETTER! I'M STILL KEEPING THAT PROMISE WE MADE EACH OTHER THAT DAY! THE WITCHDOCTOR
While Govan is a brilliant guitar player and this is a good interpretation of Shawn's piece, it's more than apparent who the Jedi Master is. Shawn Lane the
Flawless cover, Well, he did legato for most of the shred parts (too hard to pick for everybody but Shawn), but it sounded just as good. Guys like Shawn and Guthrie will always be in leagues of their own.
@Fluffypopcicle I'm pretty sure guthrie could pick all of it, he may have just been trying to get the smoothness shawn lane was so famous for, but didn't know any other way. I'm sure there is not much guthrie cant do...
Then why didn't he? Guthrie can't pick as fast as Shawn nor could he play a lot of the complicated patterns that Shawn could. He just turns simple things into way more complicated things by using a wider variety of techniques and using lots of string skipping and tapping. Shawn turned complicated into more complicated things and then made them even more complicated, but still made it all sound good.
@Fluffypopcicle He doesnt get that smooth sound with picking so he makes legato or tapping. Same for sweep picking, it's hard to see Guthrie doing it. He prefers tapping because it has a smoother sound, in an interview he said that he uses that to sound "more like sax players" I agree with you, Guthrie cant pick as fast and clean as Shawn, but there's not too much more things, and he can "cheat" ;D
awesome cover too bad Guthrie had to tap out the end licks unlike shawns freakish left hand. Even the greats of today will struggle trying to play like Shawn did. I love guthrie don't get me wrong.
@kiaranjay He means Guthrie isnt quite capable of acheiving shawns spead while stretching that far. sounds like some of it is tapped, while shawn played only left hand.
@Kingding6 Well that could be true, but I have the tab from the magazine and it isn't tapped, nor does it say it can be, and plus there's tons of videos where Guthrie does insane stretches at super fast speeds so I think he is capable of doing so, but you could be right, either way he is a god!
@cerelilqt watch the not again video in HQ. I love Guthrie as much as the next guy, but I pretty certain he can't pull off the diminished and augmented licks at the same speed Shawn can.
@Kingding6 The ending solo kind of is a signature lick of Shawns, stretching 9 bands all lefthanded. Shawns way of doing arpeggios. But I know what you mean, chromatic augmented runs and such. Cool stuff =)
I think what's amazing about this cover and what makes it the cleanest cover of all time of this song is the accuracy of the ending solo. No offense to all the other covers, but from the ones I've seen, no one has ever nailed down the ending solo like Shawn does it. Guthrie is the only soul I know that has done it. His technique and feel for this song surpasses everyone else that has attempted to this. Props to Ugur though. He has a clean cover too.
I love Shawn Lane. I am very pleased that Guthrie did this cover. Shawn is a true inspiration to me and to all the rest of the musicians out there, not just guitar players. A true gift from God he was.
I believe that he did two or three. They were in two different Magazines i would have to go through a lot of archives to find them. Thank you for your good wishes . I will tell the rest of the Family. Yes more people are doing his songs that would make him very Happy. His Music Lives On++++++++
Rumor has it that Guthrie did 3 of Shawns songs,is there any truth to that?
I understand if your not able to answer that. But the more people that attempt Shawns music is a good thing.Their will never be another Shawn, but really good to see how many he has inspired.Best wishes..
The closest i could recommend to that is the 'Guthrie plays Who's Best' video since he mimics satch, vai, malmsteen and the like. I know you probably meant for him to do a full song like it or something, but Guthrie doing 80's shred would be difficult to find otherwise since he's very 'wary' of that haha. Good call though!
If you haven't already, check out the Cornford website - the first clip on the 'audio' section (the aptly titled 'Ridiculous' considering the sheer technique of the man) should satisfy your 80's shred taste buds, especially if you're partial to a bit of the Yng.
Bugger me, thanks for putting it out there that this stuff exists. Some really good little tracks on there! I concur with the 80's shred vibe being exhibited strongly in 'Ridiculous'. The 'Loose Change' one was incredible. If that was in a song I'd buy it, and he does that stuff just as a demo for a company!? The man's off the radar.
That track was kinda what I wanted to hear Guthrie do, although I still felt he didn't quite let rip, like Malmsteen, Moore etc did back in the day. Neo-Classical style.
Do you know what I mean?
The 80's rippers had a different intensity to Shawn style.
this is astounding. I've been listening to boh Lane and Guthrie for a while now; never heard this. I am in awe at how perfect this cover is down to every last detail of Shawn's phrasing. I didn't think it could be redone; Long Live Guthrie!
As a die Hard Lane and guthrie guy,I just heard this and heve never been more proud to be a Guthrie fan.IMO Lane is arguably the greates guitarst to ever pick up the instrument. And after hearing this I am more impressed than ever at the vast amount of styles @ techniques Guthrie has,and utilizes in his music. And his ability to do covers and just nail the techniques phrasing, sig licks, etc is astounding. What cant Guthrie Govan do?
Yes, he kills it-Guthrie is one of the best in my book, and I agree Lane may be the best ever-a miraculous talent. Then again-statements like that are always suspect-it's art, not sport, but I do love these guys!
It sure is.This is one of my fav Lane tunes and man I am just blown away at how on the money every detail of this song was pefectly executed.I also cant believe there are only 3888 views.I thought this was brand new because I didnt find this until a week ago.
Right so fucking amazing this song is the most beautiful thing I think I've ever heard! More so Shawn playing it. But I really do like Guthrie but for me it's just Shawn's.
To be fair, a young(er) Guthrie landed his job with GT mag by submitting a transcription of Not Again (I think) to them many years ago, so he'd clearly been meticulously studying the terrifying Lane-isms which the rest of us...erm....can't anywhere near :)
