  • awesome voice, tutorial and the phone at the end. lol

  • thank you sir for this tutorial perfect for beginners like myself

  • Hey I've got a question for anyone.. how do you model decent abs? Is there any particular technique or do you just extrude faces?..

  • dude.. awesome tut. i have been looking for a decent beginner tutorial. for quite some time. i have both lightwave and maya and i pushed maya aside due to the difficult learning curve. your tutorial inspired me to play with maya again. thank you. and keep up the good work.

  • i cant see edit mesh in my maya 2011. huhu

  • lolstar13337.deviantart( ).com

  • Are you from texas?

  • cadsyv dajxcwd jwdcyqwd jawgdfueh f n wefk hweb fjbewufwe f bewfwefe r ger gerger gertger

  • This is the best tutorials for beginners ever. Seriously, why can't all tutorials be this simple. Thanks man.

  • im moving from blender to maya. but now, i'm just going to do all the modelling in blender. maya looks like a pain to model because you have to go to complicated menus to even find the extrude button, where in blender you would've done it on your keyboard. :(

  • he sounds like the dude from ZombieLand EPIC

  • when i use the scale tool the red green and yellow boxes are to close together to scale a certain axis how do i make them further apart?

  • When i try to make a cube,i can only see lines. It is like almost invisible.

  • ...damn all i can make is a cube

  • @cayofornication Lol - it's takes time getting used to. It's good if you've had experience in other programs like 3DSMax then you'll know. Trust me Maya is a very powerful program most of the big animated movie like Toy Story three use Maya. So, take you're time and play around with the controls and please of you want a tutorial I'll make you one. And don't worry about rendering just yet not even I'm very good with that..... so don't up.

  • click on them faces 'n kinda select 'em. I loved your accent.

  • Texas i think?? well no offence but sounds really bad, i dont imagine u guys as creative. Cinda noobish vid but ok! " lets go back to objiect maude!"

  • Texas i think?? well no offence but sounds really bad, i dont imagine u guys as creative. Cinda noobish vid but ok!

  • Great Tutorial, straight to the point, not super fast, and it was great, I agree with Burnandmelt, this helped a lot.

  • Thanks, this helped alot, i was completely lost to start with

  • hey just for future references it would b really nice if u mention what settings ur in cuz default settings puts maya in the animations settings and u need to b in the polygons setting to access the edit mesh and stuff ur using

  • @urbanmaws Okay, thanks.

  • @urbanmaws

Thanks for mentioning that, man! That's exactly what I was looking for.

  • how do i take out the "S"symbol on maya?

  • Does anyone know where I could teach Maya? I'd love to teach it.

  • @limbdarkening NYU (Polytechnic Campus)

  • awesome!

  • So how much dose it cost to download?

  • @TyrusDash You can get a twelve month license if you are a student for free.

  • WTF

Now there are ads that are 120 second long now!?

    WTF is this shit... >:(

Other then that, nice tutorial; very helpful.

  • @DAYSandMONTHS what with seconds?

  • im pretty sure if anyone is modeling and using this for a tutorial, we know what most of the tool do

  • @RossHilyard I didn't before I watched a tutorial like this where someone showed me. This tutorial is for someone who may have never even modeled before, and needs to know what most of the tools do.

  • @RossHilyard oh ok

  • 0:00 skip ads

  • reminds me of home I am from down south<3

  • do you have a job in 3d? do you have any pointers?

  • @squirtingbuttholes3 dude you have a sick channel name dogg!! i like it!!

  • *spits chewing tobe* and thats your verticeeees

    ahhhh the deep south

  • Hey, i got a problem and i hope you can help me solve it. whenever i select the upper faces of a cylinder ( the ones on the top ) and extrude them downwards, there are always one edge/ a really thin face left between each of the faces. This is really annoying :P Hope you can help me.

  • @MegaTrekant hey ... thats probably cause u dont have the "keep faces together" option selected ... youll find it under the extrude tool options ... if its deselected, each face uses its own borders for the extrude and therefor youll end up with edges standing out between the faces ...

  • hi can you help me.... i see the box but it is not gray like yourse! what do i need to do???

  • @Gamer9273 use the numbers on your keyboard to change from wire to shaded view ... im not sure which ones they are anymore ... 1-3 was smoothing i think, and 4-6 wire, shaded and textured views ...

  • @dlyrious13 thanks but :P i just did the tutorial :P now i know it :) but thanks anyway

  • Thanks a billion sir..I have chosen to follow ur tutorials over all the rest because u are clear and simple..and most of all..u say what ur clicking and what ur selecting...this is important..cheers :)

  • bom!

  • that was really helpful thank you so much

  • thank you very much for this, Unpicked2!

  • oh my god im getting with that can noise it sounds like it's rolling and going against something jesus!!!

  • anyone able to help me out...i use a macbook aluminum...how do i middle click??!?! for the part where he adds detail

  • love that southern accent

  • I like how clearly and simply you talk. Very easy to follow.

  • Wanna buy maya, but it's RIDICULOUSLY expensive.

  • @CamelCarcass No it's not, when it was $15k per license it was - now it's competitive.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, just started yesterday and I'm getting crazy because in 99% of tutorial I saw so far explain every single option in Maya, things we are not going to use ever at that basic basic level if we don't know how to create a simple cube.

  • @Naranjitowachi this was really helpful, yeah?

  • This is an epically good tutorial. No bullcrap. Just bam bam bam, this is how you do it.

  • Thank you for the tutorial. It really helped me get started with maya.

  • Great tutorial! I have a lot of trouble with Maya but you made this seem so simple. Thank you!

  • I accidently removed the thing on the side of thewindow to veiw your model how do I put it back?

  • @subulouse

Just hit space and hold it... go to the east of your screen and hit the right mouse butten... here are all the things like status line, time slider etc... click on the one you need

If that doesn't work, you can also delete the preferences, by deleting the maya folder in my documents (first copy it for backup reasons...)

  • Nice Tutorial. And I must say this dudes voice in this tutorial is freaking epic. (Yes, in a good way).

  • yea sounds kind of country lol

  • "I don't know much about biomechanics, Roy; I wish I did!" This guy reminds me of that.

  • make your video public so i can download it man

  • dude i have a problem.....when i select a face it selects the whol thing and it turns the object red.........how do i fix this????

  • That's normal. It was changed in 2009 to make selection more user friendly. In settings (under preferences) you can also click select face and highlight center or face...face is IMO a better choice because when the mesh gets dense, it's hard to find the center sometimes.

  • im an expert with lightwave 3D, iv bin using it for 3 years .

and i dont no if i shud change to maya tho?

    any ideas

  • @oliversimonnet ive been using 3ds max for 2 years and wondering weather to change to maya, but im going to collage soon (hopefully) and they use lightwave 3d? im confused, and lightwave looks really wierd and hard to learn

  • this is great. it really helped me to understand the maya interface. my only problem is that i have a trackpad, so the whole middle click thing is awkward. im definitely looking forward to viewing your other videos.

  • pretty funny how i automatically discount everything you say because you have a southern accent. that's not really fair, but it's funny

  • "...Get that them there vertices, and extrude those critters some li' bit...."

  • where do you get maya ?

  • if u have 2500 dollars go to their website

  • have a problem,i have minimize all panels, and now,i dont know where is the option to open the panels !!! help!

  • how can you pan?

  • Option+Middleclick

  • help me,have minimize all Panels,mi program now not have nothing panels, how its te option to mostrate all panels???

  • Lets take a look at your menu bar. Go ahead and navigate to Display>UI Elements, everything you need to rebuild your view all in that menu.

  • Dude you sound like Bush.LOL!

  • @hokaun HAHAHA! I can imagine Bush teaching us to use Maya! He does sound like him LOL!

  • where can i download this?

  • Block head man LOL

  • Hey.............Is This Maya 2009 Or 2010? Cuz M Using 2010. Doesnt Make Any Differences Yea?

  • well it does. I'm also using 2010 and I have a problem with finding "Edit Mash"...

  • im such a noob...

  • its edit mesh just so u know lol

  • Well, if you haven't already found it by now you can find 'Edit Mesh' by hitting F3 on the keyboard. It'll pull it up along the top where it says File Edit Modify...etc. I didn't figure it out until someone pointed it out to me a year ago.

  • It shouldn't make any difference at all.

  • how can i show the hiden tools in the left side of the program ......help!!!

  • dude i havnt used maya but i know it aint call details its call segements

  • @AleifrLeifrson

    Singular -> Vertex

    Plural-> Vertices.

As in ONE Vertex and MANY Vertices!

    :)

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks man that really helps, i wasnt to sure how to do stuff like that.

  • I have Maya 2009 and it's different than the one this guy's using. It's called "vertex" not "vertecies" or whatever in mine. And when I move the vertex everything else follows it slightly.

  • Vertices's are just the actual name

  • I think vertices is vertex in plural. But I fixed the problem I had by reseting preferences. You do that by going to your documents folder, there you find a folder called Maya. Delete the pref folder. (just incase anyone has the same problem I had)

  • nevermind i brought it back

  • hey um i don't have a "channel box". like, there's no box at the right side of my screen. its just the 3d window. nothing to the right of it. i had it before but somehow i can't bring it back.

  • @Tazy50: There are three weird icons in the upper right corner of the screen, click the one farthest to the left. You can edit the subdevisions under "Inputs".

  • hey dude a few months ago i was braggin about blender but now i got maya!!!!!! and im just starting to um learning it

  • are you george bush

  • Lol, this is boxhead ppl!

  • bro Having a problem, When I invoke the Marking menu of polys I have Vertex no Vertices, the effect is different when you move a vertex point, it deforms the figure, won't move only the line across the surface? how do I access Vertices? Im using maya 2009

  • How do i Select Faces and not Vertices :( ?

  • I like this guys voice. He's got the whole Maya artist vs. southern-accent, f-kin' great! :-*

  • C4D forever! :p

    Just started learning maya.

  • MAYA is a pain in the ass :/

  • you're a pain in the ass...

  • lol, that is true :D

  • ur simply an ass

  • this conversation has too much ass in it.....

  • Great tutorial, take a look at my videos, I show all the steps of how a game character is created in recent games :)

Keep on the good work !

  • THIS.

    IS.

    VERY.

    HELPFUL!

OMG thiS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!

  • OMG its sarge from red vs blue!

  • lol looks like it

but he differs by giving actually useful advice

  • Hey! Thanks alot! After having trouble w books and some video tutorials, this helped me alot! Thanks!

  • Thanks for the tutorial man, seriously helped me out A LOT

  • But, is there a way to do this real-time. Like if i drag a vertix on the right, the same mirrored vertex on the left also get pulled. I'm trying to do something perfectly symetric, such as faces and animals. I'm still kind of new to maya, but if there is some kind of way, i'm eger to know :D

BTW nice tutorial, the vertex-forging (or what it was called) really did some help ^^

  • mirrored geometry. look it up, i just watched a good one that will do just what you seem to be asking

  • Oh, that's actually fairly simple, defifisk. Just go to "duplicate special", go into the options box, click the check mark for "instance", and make it so the model is scaled opposite of the other side. So if you're building it facing the Z axis, then set it to scale -1 X.

What ever you do to the one side will be done to the other side now. :O :)

Anyways, this tutorial was clearly done by someone who was still just learning to model as well. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

  • Cool stuff man. Very clear instructions and warnings.

Feel free to check out my youtube account or website for the start of an entire series of 60+ vids covering Maya from interface to advanced topics if you like. :)

I think we can all learn something from each other.

  • LOL, I doubt you could learn much from me, man.

But, I can stand to learn some new tricks.

    Well, Take care.

  • Thank you very much mate.

Maybe this Blockman won't appear in next Pixar's movie but he has been very helpful to me to start with Maya.

  • yeah thats cool. You made all time Quads. But isn't too soon to mirror the half?? is still looking crappy and if you want more details you will have to work twice (and it won't be symetric)

  • LOL, I only had 10 minutes, man. I was just showing them the basics. But you can always delete one half, and mirror it again after you shape it up to make it symmetric.

  • Thanks for posting.

  • is this hard cause i am good at drawing things on mspaint i saw a teaser where they was going over a drawing and making it 3d in ploygons

  • you can scan your drawings to maya, first create a new camera then load the drawing onto the camera. Then extrude deform your ohjects to fit the picture.

  • my computer sucks so maya dont come up since i dont have the requirements

  • so what..xaxa we are all professionals..omg..yes houdini is powerfull for particles but..i can do my job with maya for sure..its worth to learn maya and houdini.maya covers me and it has incredible abilities..inside these programs you learn techniqies every time you study them.houdini doens not kill a so much powerfull program..besides maya kills..3dstudio max..xoxo

  • come on guys, i love maya but Houdini Kills Maya.

  • I never even heard of Houdini, so It must not be that good, LOL. If it was worth anything, I would of at least heard of it somewhere, man.

  • And here ladies and gentlemen... we have George W. Bush teaching Maya on youtube...

    JK lol

  • im really new with maya... how do you make it so the polygons or anything you make is shaded in that gray color instead of transparent?.

  • Choose a view Window. For exampel Top view. Then click on view and choose Smooth shade all instead of wireframe.

  • hit 6 on your keyboard ^.^

  • hit 5

  • Thanks, man.

  • whats the difference between Maya and 3DSMax?

  • maya is more stronger on video, and 3ds max on games

  • thanks

  • nice video, but i need someon to tell me how to add picture/ image in autodesk maya. Thank you !

  • I know how to do it, but I would have to a show you, I don't think I could explain how. I might make a video someday showing how to do that.

  • man thanks for the tutorial. keep it up. and keep mentioning how to execute the controls, it really helps a lot.

  • Alright, man. thanks for watching.

  • I think I could creat that cube!

  • LOL, it takes time to learn, but I think anybody could get the hang of it. Well, take it easy.

  • I was just refering to the first cube ... ;)

  • oh I am trying to get into modeling to get in the career of game design but I can not find any good modeling programs that don't cost money alwell.

  • Sorry, Man. I don't know of any good free program either. Well, take it easy.

  • Hi.. Try Blender.. Is the best free software for 3D Modeling.. A little bit more complicated then maya but is very powerful.

  • blender more complicated than maya? biggest LOL ever!! you dont even know what you are talking about dude

  • LOL, Man. Blender is like a water gun, and Maya is like an ak 47!!

  • 100% agreed

  • where 3ds max is an Berret Sniper rifle with titanium ammo.

  • 3d max has is strong points from what I've heard, I've never used it, so I cant say It's better or worse than Maya.

  • its really good...

Ive been using 3ds for a few months now, but i have to leave it since i dont have a license. (i dont like illigal things). so im moving to maya ple, and its really weird lol

will take some time to get used to :)

  • Now which game is this for

  • Uhm, its not for a game, sure, you can use it as a model in a game, but you dont have to, you can render it and export it into a picture, or you can animate it and make a movie or something like that... (This program was used to create for example the robots in the Transformers movie)

  • and King Kong!!! :P my second best movie

  • Sure thing, whacko? :P Stoned? =)Oh that movie, nvm i was the one who was stoned i believe... :P

  • This is a realy nice tut! It's kinda hard to find quality videos on maya. Thanks. I hope there are more comming. Good Job.

  • Thanks, Man.

  • Say you have a cube and you want to put a video on each of 5 of it's 6 sides. do you have to build the cube with 6 separate planes?

  • I don't know. I'll have to try it and see. But probably not. you should be able to select each face, and assign a different video to each face.

  • jippi i go a response, great informative video. ild soon have maya on this copmuter to, jippi

  • That's good. What version of maya well you be getting. I use Maya 8.

  • im getting versio 8 i hope

  • theres a maya 2008 now :P they stopped naming them with numbers.

  • oh, i diont know that. thanks

  • Oh, is there a big difference in the 2008 version?

  • hell yeah, that's why they named it 2008, there are short cuts for the artisan (sculpting tool, shift for smoothing and ctrl for cutting into the geometry), some modelling workflow improvemets, new mental ray shaders and other rendering improvements and I'm sure there are lots of other new features too :P

  • no thats is the virson 9.0

  • That was fascinating. I had not idea it was so complex.

    Be Well.

  • Well, Now that I know I can upload a video longer than 10 minutes, I might try to make something a little more complex than a block head man, and put it up. but I might make a rigging tutorial first. Thanks for the comment, take it easy.
