"Magnolia" is a complex tapestry of of love, fear, sorrow...of pain, desperation, discovery, transformation...of forgiveness, redemption and healing.
This song is a wonderful reminder that each of us is responsible for our own happiness. Our choices create our destiny. If we don't like any component of our life, we can "wise up" and awaken to our own power and embrace the ability to change our self, to change our destiny. In that moment in time of surrendering, we become our own hero...
People that do not like this film haven't experienced life until the point of no forgiveness, whether to themselves or someone else, and that is where this film is lost on many
Thanks. Thanks for being the best filmmaker of the 21st century, next to David Fincher. Thanks for Magnolia. Because of your film, I now have hope for life. You have created lasting impressions that I have from this beautiful film. It has some of the best dialogue and scenes of all time. You are a wonderful filmmaker. Thanks for giving me hope.
In that opening scene Jason Robards was really sick like that he died not long after this movie was made from what I read he was not really acting too much there he was a very sick man. This was his last movie he appeared in. RIP Mr. Robards
This scene defines the whole movie. Without even realising it, the entire cast are bound by forces beyond their control, summed up brilliantly by a song they all share, which basically dicates to them that their ongoing pain is not going to leave them until they get a better perspective of what life is all about. But, because most of us haven't a clue what life is all about, so their pain endures. Some reconciliations may ensue, during which it rains frogs. AMAZING MOVIE.
On a completely different note my favorite Angry Beavers episode was 'Pond Scum', while my favorite Tiny Tunes episode was ;Fit to be Stewed'. I bet the majority of the population sadly is unaware of these beautiful works of art. People would rather listen to Justin Bieber and watch Glee or Two and a Half Men
of the characters living out their depressing lives with 'In the Deep' by Bird York playing. That same song was used in an episode of House. I believe the one with the little girl who was dying or something.
Honestly this type of scene with the dramatic song and the actors singing has been used before, not saying it wasnt a powerful scene, certainly was the best part of the movie, but it has been used before. Actually no wait, not technically before but has been used again. In the Nip/Tuck Season 4 Finale at the end there is a montage of the characters very depressingly singing "brighter discontent" by The Submarines. In the movie Crash, though the characters werent singing, they had a montage
no matter how good a vid is, there are always a handful of "dislikes", the little red dot at the very end of the green bar. I don't get it. Are those the same people who vote no to everything they've seen? how bitter do they have to be to give thumbs down to this vid?
First time I saw the film, and it came to Claudia on the couch, and the piano began to play, I thought, "is she going to start singing?" Suddenly, she did. I sat there silent and amazed through the whole sequence, and I think I was crying by the end of it. Similarly, when the film reached its emotional peak, I thought, "These poor fucking people; where the hell is God in all of this?" And then frogs began to rain from the sky. LOL
@soaresSousa1 The frogs are a symbol for change. Notice that the main characters are depressed and lonely and their situation never changes for a majority of the movie. It then takes something so bizzare such as the rare phenomenon of raining frogs to open up there eyes and "Wise Up". This is why after the raining frogs the charcters are shown finally moving on with their lives.
I saw ths film for the first time only a few days ago. I know it's gonna be one of those films that sticks with me forever [actually, iike basically every Paul Thomas Anderson movie for that matter]
I, too, saw this song was being used in ads for Intervention and Hoarders. The whole Magnolia soundtrack was great. This part of the movie, however, was stunning... *love*
I, too, saw this song was being used in ads for Intervention and Hoarders. The whole Magnolia soundtrack was great. This part of the movie, however, was stunning... *love*
I heard this song on the commercial of Hoarders and in the show The Glades, it took my breath away. This is such a beautiful song and it speaks of the truth. <3
Its not going to stop. But I wont give up. We can't. This is my favourite movie. It reminds me of so much of whats gone on in my life. I know its the same for most. This movie touches so many. When we think things are going well for us something hits us for six. It always will. Not going to give up though.
Paul Thomas Anderson in undoubtedly one of the best film directors alive. He may only have done five movies, but each one of those movies is unique and special. He is a true talent, and I hope to see a lot more of his films in the future. Mr Anderson, I salute you!
This song was recorded for the Jerry McGuire film, then they didn't use it in their movie. Paul Anderson heard it and knew it was amazing, and wrote this scene in, a unique one in such dramatic movies. Then it COULDN'T be nominated for "Best Song" Oscar because of being used on the Jerry McGuire soundtrack record! Damn shame...
Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance in this film planted the initial seed that ultimately lead to my decision to become a nurse. Having finally reached that goal I find an infinite amount of catharsis and an even deeper meaning to this song after having both survived the rigors of nursing school and having helped people with their assorted problems, self inflicted or otherwise. No one is perfect, even those who are supposed to lead the way, and this song/scene serve as an excellent reminder.
Really good, i was only a late comer to this film, the first time i watched it was about 2 years ago, and that was only because Ricky Gervais, and Stephen Merchant used to play loads of Aimee Mann on their original radio show.
Properly good fil, though at 3 hrs it is abit long, but when you get into it, the time flies by.

I wasn't fully engaged in the American collective consciousness when this movie came out, but I'm in film school now and I have heard "it said" (meaning students talking about critical reviews) that this is the "Perfect film." I was taken back at first, almost offended(I don't buy into reviews), then I watched it and I have to agree, it is by far my most favorite film of all time vanquishing Eraserhead, The Shining... why bother making a list[?] lol.
The last couple of times I've watched Magnolia is on late night Sky TV, drunk and alone (the first time after my nan had died last year, and again last night).
BOTH times I've totally lost it (in other words, started sobbing) with this scene! (that and Jason Robards' "regret" speech) I saw Magnolia at the cinema ten years ago and thought it was a masterpiece then, but it seems to resonate with me more with age...

I am serious, but I can totally appreciate that some people feel differently.
I thought There Will Be Blood was a visual masterpiece. Again, PTA is great with a camera.
But I thought the story arc was one-dimensional and basically uninteresting.
I mean, was there any point in the movie where you thought, "I can't wait to find out what happens next?"
I never felt that way. I felt totally disengaged from all of the characters.
