  • I have a question, when you start to sc, I understand you skip the first chain and then insert the hook in the 2nd one to start, my question is, do you keep skipping a chain before you insert hook or is this only at the first time?

    Thank you!

  • @MelindaPuente only the first one. In crochet the working loop is almost always at the top of the stitch. This chain moves your yarn to the height of a single crochet stitch.

  • I"m still struggling on how to do the chain stitch but I will be patient.

  • your videos are amazing...im just starting out and you go at a good pase(:

what kind of yarn are you using because it looks like its really easy to work with

  • @xxXxxdancerrrxxXxx I'm not sure. I often use scraps for my videos. I think its Red Heart Super saver, but it could be another acrylic worsted weight medium number 4 yarn.

  • Out of all the "how to crochet" videos on you tube, yours were the easiest to understand. It's your attention the detail that make your tutorials the BEST I've seen by far. THANK YOU! :D

  • i have been trying to teach myself crochet for days now and cant get it, ur video was a BIG help, ty ty ty (still dont have it but im much closer lol)

  • Wonderful and so helpful!

Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

  • Thx for the video! it was soo helpful!

  • i got it i got it yay!

  • I can't believe it was this easy the whole time, I couldn't never figure out how to make the next row, so all I use to do was make really long chains. And no one explained it better then you just did. So thank you so much for posting this video it really help me out alot.

  • Thank you so much for these videos. I am having a problem with my single crochet rows that I have tried many times to correct and nothing I do seems to fix it. After several rows the corners of my work starts to curl. This is not happening on my half double crochet rows or double crochet rows just the single crochet rows. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

  • @jct2u You are doing nothing wrong. This stitch naturally curls. To lessen the curl use a larger hook. It will curl anyway. You can block the piece when you are finished by wetting it and pinning it in place and let it dry over night. For acrylic, you should use steam.

  • LOVE your tutorials! My Grandmother crocheted like nobody's business, but she has passed on now & I was too impatient to learn properly when she could teach me. Your videos are the only ones online (& I really searched) that make any sense & I can actually see what you are doing.

I have a question. I'm using a basic white plastic hook & finding it is not sliding through the chains easily... Any tips to make it a smoother experience? I heard a light oil helps, but wouldn't that stain the yarn?

  • @SLP0822 I have an old white plastic hook & it is much more difficult to use than the aluminum or the bamboo hooks. They are under $5 to purchase. I recommend you buy a new hook.

You could try baby powder. It is harmless and will not stain and will wash out. Do not use oil on plastic. Plastic is an oil by-product, so it could make the plastic sticky. Another thing is use some hand lotion on your hands.

  • @Bethintx1 Hmm... the hook is a brand new Susan Bates hook - 6.00mm (starter gift from the teacher at my church) so I will definitely try the baby powder. Hadn't thought about my hands but I probably do need lotion! I live in hot and dry FL.. I will try both and see how it goes... Will also look into buying a metal hook. I think I have a coupon around here somewhere! Thanks for getting back to me so fast!

  • @SLP0822 Oh! sorry. I misunderstood. I was picturing the old cheap plastic hooks that would bend & break that came in some kits when I was a kid. You are probably using an acrylic hook.

You should to loosen up a little on your tension. That will help immensely.

  • I started doing this and my 2nd row was 90 degrees from my first chain stitch... what am I doing wrong? I'm making an "L", haha! Love your tutorials though :)

  • @gzussturbo I don't know! I can't picture it. If you take a photo it might help. Maybe you should start over and try again.

  • @Bethintx1 I fixed the problem :) Just some bad looping on my end, although it was a nice row, but i'm not sure how to get the "L" again. Now it's looking like yours, but I'm using black yarn which makes it tough to see the loops at times. Today is my first day even touching a crochet hook, but I'm liking it so far all thanks to your videos!

  • Your crochet tutorials are the best and easiest to learn with! Thank you!

  • thank you so much for this video!! i just started crocheting this morning, and from this video and the one after it i've already started making a scarf! :)

  • THANK YOU. Thank you so very much! I've started trying to self-teach and i can chain like a master but hadn't found how/where to do that insert to really begin single crochets. I thought that after the chain, the first row was the "second" row because it was my second time along the line- OOPS, my presumption made following the other text directions i found impossible. Thank you for this so much; I'm going to dedicate my first completed ANYTHING to you. For now, i wanna swatch! <3

  • @unsee1ie *Smiles* :D thanks!

  • I just want to thank you so much for these excellent tutorials!! I've been so lost with this whole crochet thing and you've really cleared things up for me. Thanks again!

  • This is so great! I love your videos soooo much I had to blog them

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I just watched approximately 3 million crochet tutorial videos & was still lost. Watched this twice through & I've got it.

  • Your videos are the only helpful crochet videos I've found on YouTube. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post them.

  • OMGosh!! Your so amazing! thankyou so much for posing these, I'm a complete first timer and I've just completed my first row! thankyou thankyou thankyou! :D

  • So, if I chain 15, the first row will be 14, plus 1, then the row after that will also be 14, plus the one to continue the next row? I find math hard^^

  • @Zambaku right. The extra chain is used to bring your yarn up tho the top of the single crochet stitches and is usually not worked into.

  • hey im gona start to crochet and im wondering how to make a sackboy (sackboy means doll type) so yea can do u mind if u can make a video request on how to make a sackboy? becuz ive always look on youtube and they tend to be confusing for mi and ive watched the 2010 crochet videos and im just wondering if u can do any type of sackboy doll the reason why i ask a video request waz becuz im trying to make it for mi friend and im gona get the supplies tommorroww and start working on it thxs if u can!

  • @narutochick365 You need to learn the single crochet first then learn to make a flat circle. If you follow along with all of these videos including learning to read a pattern, you should be able to follow a pattern in a book. I do not have a video of amigurumi on here right now. I do not know if I'll ever get to one. I have a long list of videos I want to make already. I think Teresa Richardson has a video on making a Teddy Bear.

  • @Bethintx1 kk thxs a whole bunchies ^^

  • Thank you! I've been knitting for about a year and a half and love it, but I keep hearing crochet is quicker and easier, so I finally decided to learn. I'm totally hooked on fiber, lol and I think you've just given me a new reason to buy yarn!

  • Hi,

I just started to learn how to crochet and I LOVE IT!!! I have been trying to make a scarf to learn how to do my stitches better and more even... But My mother in law showed me to start the scarf the long way...So I make my chain and long as I want the scarf...I tried this once (its the only thing I ever made) and it worked out nice...but you don't start yours that way so I was wondering if it matters? My chain is about 165 long to start. THANKS I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!

  • @LetMeKnowTruthAlways Nope. You scarf will have vertical lines instead of horizontal lines, that is all.

  • @Bethintx1 Thanks so much for answering me so fast!! I am learning so much from you!! THANKS:) I can't wait to give my daughter the scarf.

  • Do you prefer SB or Boye hooks?

  • @lilmizweasley I prefer Susan Bates. For me the Boye has a little tip on the hook that splits the yarn.

  • I ADORE your teaching! I am finally crocheting properly! I understand you very well and my moms scarf is coming out just perfect!!!!! Thank you, Thank you!!!

  • @naturelovermom Thanks to you and others who have been leaving positive comments!

  • THANK YOU DARLING! Best one I have ever seen teaching this!

  • @YigsHorror I totally agree!

  • Is this all the same for the thick yarn, like the fringy kind? Because its very hard to see the stitches in the scarf unlike the thinner yarn. And if so is there any way to make this process easier?

    Also GREAT VIDEO :)

  • @TheRealVannie So Are you asking if there is a way to use textured yarn that will make it easier? I will either add a strand of smooth sport weight yarn and the textured yarn together, so the stitches can be seen; or use a much larger hook and wear contrasting color clothing so I can see the stitches. holding it up to the light helps too. The best crochet stitch IMO for textured yarn is the V stitch. I have it on my list for future videos.

  • Thanks sooooo much for your videos. So often they are not quite close enough to the camera, or their hands sometimes hide what they are doing. yours are wonderful! Thanks for the close up work!

  • Now I am reading a book that says that is cheating. It says that it works, but it leaves large loops at the bottom of the work. Can you make a video using the method where you push the hook under both chains, leaving the butt on the needle to crochet with?

  • @MyassWins It's a matter of preference, not cheating. I have no large loops on my work. What often happens is when one goes through two loops, there is no stretch to the fabric on that edge, and the end looks tighter than the rest of the work. I'll put a comparison video on my list of "to-do" videos...there is already 10 on the list, so I won't likely get to it until after New Years 2011.

  • @Bethintx1 Yeah I can't even figure out what I'm doing wrong with the way its written in the book. Think I'm twisting everything as I go. Followed your video and I actually got somewhere. Ahah thank you for the consideration, I subbed so when you do get around to it (and I understand the time it takes) I will see it!

  • Thank you so much for your help. I am just learning and so many people go so fast. You take time and you make it very helpful. I appreciate your help so much.

    Bless you!

  • ok so when i did that, the first row, it came out all clumpy and not at all like that. I am getting so frustrated because i have been trying to crochet for a week and i still didnt get the basics, i have just started watching your vidoes today and when i tryed to do the first row of the chain stich, it comes out all clumpy. why do you think it comes out like that? do you think maybe it's the yarn, maybe it's too thin, i have a medium # 4 yarn. or is it the corchet hook? i have a J.

  • @puckass666 The chain is the most difficult thing to crochet. It takes a lot of practice. If you want to learn to crochet without too many chain stitches, you can go to my How to crochet a granny square tutorials. They are listed as How to crochet making a Granny square Lesson 1, etc.

  • I want to make an over sized scarf... maybe 20 inches wide and 6 feet long.. its alooooooot of yarn. but oyu make it look so easy. and you make me want to try the crazy! i want to learn pattern making with crochet!

  • @Bibi07NO oh and im 19! lol

  • what a great video!

haha kinda embarrassing that i'm watching a vid on howto crochet, but i just quit smoking 60 days ago, and am looking for yet another thing to do with my hands.

just a very well put together video, and very easy to follow.

  • @twitchster77 This will definitely help. You need both hands! I'm working on not eating junk. The more cravings I get, the more projects get finished!

  • @twitchster77 not werid... i thinkin im getting old 22 and trying to knit~!

  • So helpful!!!

  • This helped soo much! Thank you!!

  • omg this video helped me so much my new rows were getting sooo uneven and i couldn't understand why..i was so frustrated. You are the only one with a detailed upclose video with out moving to fast.
