The world uses a billion barrels of oil every twelve days. There is approx 14,633,840 acres of arable land in the world. Hemp could produce about 328 gallons of ethanol per acre per annum. This would equate to about 4,799,899,520 of potential gallons of ethanol. Ethanol is only 1.5 times as potent as OIL, which means really you're talking about 3.13 billion gallons per annum. The big problem is there is no land for food. We cant feed everyone as is.
The number one cause of global hunger acording to the UN's WFP is poverty,the second being conflict and not insufficient land to grow food.

Last week a government guy (In the UK) rang the bell asking to come into my house to check that I don't have a TV (because I am not paying the TV licence). I let him in (in order to avoid him coming back with a bunch of goons), and after finding no TV he looked at me like I was a weirdo.

In most european countries there is a TV licence, it's a fixed fee in the electriciy bill and most people are not aware of it. At least in the UK it's a specific licence and you can completly avoid it.

Interestingly, Standard oil (perhaps it was Mobil), General Motors, and one of the big tire companies bought controlling interests in many of the rail transit companies around the country and pretty much run them into the ground. I had heard fantastic things about switchgrass a few years ago in regards to use as a biofuel. It grows 10 feet or so, grows vigorously and is prevalent throughout the prairies of N.America. I saw experiments as to how much better of an alternative fuel to corn based ethanol switchgrass could be, there were many advantages. Of course, I knew then & there that it could not become a reality for mankind...so freakin sad.

*applause* joe thank you so much for stepping up to the plate on this issue. For over 2 years now i've been trying to get a hemp festival going in my part of London but have found nothing but ignorance & obsfucation. The mechanism is global: all you say about the US applies to the UK.
I've said it for years but will say it again. Hemp, Silver & Permaculture will save the world.

Just to show what an IDIOT BOX the TV really is.. In the United Kingdom, people are asked to pay a "Licence" fee just to have the privilege of watching live broadcasts on one (BEFORE any subscriptions for the channels they watch). The people who watch it are so idiotic they actually pay the $224 a year for this TV Licence. How nuts is that!?!
I have a lovely 32 inch LCD TV plugged into my PC and watch many wonderful shows (and YouTube channels like yours Joe!) and it doesn't cost me a penny!

Hemp is illegal because it's useful! Hemp seed contains all of the essential amino acids and fatty acids required to sustain human life. If everyone had an abundance of hemp there would be a MUCH lesser need for many of the products that are sold to us every day!
I think we should all start dropping hemp (non-THC varieties, of course!) seed in hedgerows here and there wherever we travel.. It grows so easily it will soon be EVERYWHERE ;)

@stuartsbushcraftblog I look at the Lister Engine (British and Indian makes) the same way. They design an engine that will last a couple generations and run your whole house or farm on veg. oil???? NO WAY. that will not work at all. The EPA even banned importation of them to the USA a few years ago just to make sure nobody get any self sufficient ideas.....

Hemp will not save the world from peak oil.
The world uses a billion barrels of oil every twelve days. There is approx 14,633,840 acres of arable land in the world. Hemp could produce about 328 gallons of ethanol per acre per annum. This would equate to about 4,799,899,520 of potential gallons of ethanol. Ethanol is only 1.5 times as potent as OIL, which means really you're talking about 3.13 billion gallons per annum. The big problem is there is no land for food. We cant feed everyone as is.

@TheSilverbullet99 you're completely missing the point. The world is expecting 80 million barrels of oil per day at an EROEI of 80 - 100+ and instead we're going to get ~200000 `barrels' of ethanol per day at an EROEI of 3 - 10.
Heavy industry is going to contract regardless.

@davincij15 I'm not too worried about peak oil. As the supply diminishes, the price will go up which means that things that don't absolutely need oil will have more competition for alternatives. Perhaps things like Hemp will find a way back in in that environment and there will be enough political pressure to make the bought politicians legalize it regardless of what their masters say.

Last week a government guy (In the UK) rang the bell asking to come into my house to check that I don't have a TV (because I am not paying the TV licence). I let him in (in order to avoid him coming back with a bunch of goons), and after finding no TV he looked at me like I was a weirdo.

PS: the sad thing is that most people are happy and proud of the Big Brother Corp. (BBC), and happy to pay the licence.
In most european countries there is a TV licence, it's a fixed fee in the electriciy bill and most people are not aware of it. At least in the UK it's a specific licence and you can completly avoid it.

People in Europe are in general hardly taxed by an approx. 50% income tax and with the money left they go to shop and pay again approx. 20% value added tax. Europe still has a central planning implemented by Marxist's ideas to manage most of other's people money. It's very likely the current economy won't support this much longer. It's no surprise capital is now leaving Europe and flow to Asia.

@silverfuturist People that claim they have no TV set are visited by the agents that have the right to enter your home to look for a TV set or a radio. Some countries in Europe tax every home even if they don't have these devices. In some countries additional tax is added to a memory media (hard disks, CDs, DVDs) to pay musical artists that can't earn enough money on a free market. I would rather not to talk about the cost for just having a car here in Europe.

I still watch some TV but much less than I used to. It is becoming very boring due to the lack of variety in the reporting of the news. The stories are out there, the MSM is not reporting them. Most of the newer programs seem so synthetic having no soul to them. The war on drugs is propaganda. It should be done away with. Its time to leave people alone and let them get on with their lives.

Using hemp to solve the energy crisis will destroy farmland. After all,the idea behind spreading manure is to return those elements back to the land where it originally came.
Not all elements come from the soil though. Soybeans,alfalfa,and clover get nitrogen from the air, bringing it to the soil.

THC in hemp has also been found to kill cancerous tumors. Google "Harvard TCH cancer study". There's many more studies out there that back Harvard's research. Check out PhoenixtearsDOTca or just Google Rick Simpson's THC hemp oil treatment for cancer.

Interestingly, Standard oil (perhaps it was Mobil), General Motors, and one of the big tire companies bought controlling interests in many of the rail transit companies around the country and pretty much run them into the ground. GM sold the idea on the then new diesel engines so buses that they built could change routes and run on tires, the oil companies won on both deals.
It isn't just a story in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where the Red line was destroyed, in favor of the freeway...

I had heard fantastic things about switchgrass a few years ago in regards to use as a biofuel. It grows 10 feet or so, grows vigorously and is prevalent throughout the prairies of N.America. I saw experiments as to how much better of an alternative fuel to corn based ethanol switchgrass could be, there were many advantages.
