Both Jane and Rochester weren't supposed to be handsome, yet each era has its measure for beauty and by Victorian standards both of them are far from ideal. The ideal was someone with "Grecian profile" as Saint John, for example.
As for TS miscasted as Rochester, if they casted Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera, then TS's choice was perfect for Rochester !
According to the book Mr. Rochester wasn't supoused to be handsome. Toby Stephens is far too good looking for such role. But still...it is very beautiful adaptation of the book, not very accurate, but still very touching. Toby and Ruth have such a chemistry together. Ruth is the best Jane as far as I saw almost all adaptations of Jane Eyre.
I was so absorbed when I watched the movie for the first time. I couldn't figure out which point had moved me so much...after reviewing, I know it's not only for the most romantic story but also the great performance. I now can't help picturing TB's Mr.R in my mind when reading the JE book.
somebody said that to put on a good adaption of JE, just choose a guy who's handsome for Mr.R and a relatively plain girl for J, then together it will achieve the deepest dream in every woman's heart. I sort of agree with that. Toby's Mr R is far too handsome and gorgeous.
