Nobody goes to war for JUST peace & freedom anymore. The powers that be, and I don't mean the U.S. government, go to war to benefit their own financial / economic gains. If there happens to be a small country in Africa fighting for freedom, without international / U.S. help, people would bitch if private companies came to help with that freedom. The greatest warriors in the world are not in the U.S. DOD - we all got out.
But not all blackwater operators are american. A few are chilean and colombian. Do they have any loyalty to the USA? Or would they sell to the highest bidder? Sure blackwater is majority American but they have no real loyalty to the USA anymore. They can chose not to serve or to serve. A US soldier cannot make that choice he/she must serve. Private military is a dangerous business for any country. It can also undermine national military defense.
No company has an "obligation" to accept ANY contract - no shit. Don't use hypothetical scenario's, how about real situations: Would they work in Darfur to protect food & medical supplies & UN workers? Hell yes. Would they work in Colombia to stop the FARC from murdering innocent people? Yes. Would they work in Iraq to protect State Department workers re-building that country? Yes. Would they work in Afghanistan helping their police enforce Human Rights? Yes.
Now, would they work FOR the FARC, Janjaweed, AQ, Taliban if they paid twice, 3 times what the U.S. gvt. paid? You can't be serious. A man is regarded as a "hero" for serving his country in the military with noble values and morals. 2 days later he's all of a sudden a murderer because he started working as a civilian? Morals don't change. Civilians even have more stringent Rules for Use of Force than the military. A U.S. soldier DID make a choice - when they joined.
The paradigm that only cops and uniformed military should ever have those scary guns is what will be the ruin & downfall of protecting innocent people all over the world from evil. Have you ever seen a U.N. Peacekeeping Force? Incompetent, inept, ineffective. Why not send someone who can actually save lives? But, let's not be American bullies to the rest of the world. Now you're in a conundrum. To deploy an effective military without the civilian support, you need a draft!
I do not believe that only cops and military should carry guns. I own 4 guns in my home and have no problem with current gun ownership laws. Now I am very young and haven't been to many dangerous countries. Even though i lived in a third world country most of my life and had friends get kidnap and cops do shit. A lot of people i know use private security in my home country venezuela. But these guys do not have many rules governing them (venezuela) and i have seen them shoot unarmed people.
Unfortunately, gun laws may change in the US, leaving us more defenseless. Sounds like there's a lot of sub-standard security in Venezuela. I would have provided better protection with ethics & without the abuse. But then, what is a government to do about it? Try to protect themselves (defense)? Or go after the organized crime (offense)? I learned in Colombia: The gvt. officials that complain the most about "excessive force" against crime are usually the ones that are corrupt.
Being dependent on a government to protect you (US, Venezuela, etc.) is suicidal. Would you rather have these "mercenaries" keeping you alive or take your chances on your own with the police / military - "Dialing 911 / 171?" I can agree there's better & worse security guys. An NFL team pays top dollar for the best quarterback. Why wouldn't an entity pay top dollar for the best security (ethics / morals) to keep them alive. I just dont like the idea. Saving lives for profit. I do not know all PMC firms so I can't say all are the same. But in Venezuela I thank god all my friends were returned safe. But in one instance I remember being told the story when I was 16, that a family's friend son was kidnap and they had private security. They had agreed on a price for the firm and plus the ransom. Suddenly the firm then wanted an extra 50% on the fee because they didn't have the handguns they wanted.
After the initial fee plus ransom money an extra 50% because of handguns they had were 2 years old now I dont know much about the standard of the guns so I dont know if they were right or wrong that is not my problem. But the day of the exchange they tell the family gives an extra 50% or we wont save ur son what is a family suppose to do say oh well i will go to another company just like that. That is why American Security companies work overseas. They're the best - Moral, honorable, effective. I've been around the US military for 35 years. I've worked for American Security companies overseas. If you need protection in a high-threat environment, an American Security Company is the best means of staying alive. Even versus US military. I have a question and since you seem knowledgeable about PMC. If a PMC is operating in foreign country what are they laws that bound them? I do not have a giant problem with PMC and I do not like the idea of them. But I understand to some extent the need. I also understand that not all firms in the video are blackwater. If I was working as a humanitarian in a hostile area and could choose between a military squad (non-Special Ops) or a civilian security company to protect me, I'd go with the civ's or not at all. Our military has become that incompetent. US military leadership is cowardice, incompetent and self-serving (careers / politics). Civ's are hired to do a job, and they do it well. That job is to protect lives. What is your life worth? Why would you not hire the best to keep you alive?
NOBODY working for the U.S. government (military / civilian) was bound by Iraqi law. That would be counter-productive. Contractors were still under U.S. law. Adding the UCMJ (military law) was just a response to liberal whining. Every time Blackwater fired a round, it was investigated, just like police shootings - same paperwork & process.
The BEST contractors are prior military w/ several years of superior training and experience - compared to U.S. military of 18-year-old scared kids with a machine guns. "Private military / army?" They're more like a "Private Secret Service." No contractor is doing "combat missions" or any "offensive operations." If they fire a weapon, it's in slef defense. Now try to imagine self defense, or protecting a client, in a place like Iraq or Afghanistan. It doesn't look like "mall security."

There are many of those. Blackwater is of course the biggest one. There is British Aegis, Norwegian Special Intervention Group, American DynCorp. Check on Wikipedia, there's a lot about it.

I do not believe that only cops and military should carry guns. I own 4 guns in my home and have no problem with current gun ownership laws. Now I am very young and haven't been to many dangerous countries. Even though i lived in a third world country most of my life and had friends get kidnap and cops do shit. A lot of people i know use private security in my home country venezuela. But these guys do not have many rules governing them (venezuela) and i have seen them shoot unarmed people.

Unfortunately, gun laws may change in the US, leaving us more defenseless. Sounds like there's a lot of sub-standard security in Venezuela. I would have provided better protection with ethics & without the abuse. But then, what is a government to do about it? Try to protect themselves (defense)? Or go after the organized crime (offense)? I learned in Colombia: The gvt. officials that complain the most about "excessive force" against crime are usually the ones that are corrupt.

I just dont like the idea. Saving lives for profit. I do not know all PMC firms so I can't say all are the same. But in Venezuela I thank god all my friends were returned safe. But in one instance I remember being told the story when I was 16, that a family's friend son was kidnap and they had private security. They had agreed on a price for the firm and plus the ransom. Suddenly the firm then wanted an extra 50% on the fee because they didn't have the handguns they wanted.

I've worked for American Security companies overseas. If you need protection in a high-threat environment, an American Security Company is the best means of staying alive. Even versus US military. If I was working as a humanitarian in a hostile area and could choose between a military squad (non-Special Ops) or a civilian security company to protect me, I'd go with the civ's or not at all. Our military has become that incompetent. US military leadership is cowardice, incompetent and self-serving (careers / politics). Civ's are hired to do a job, and they do it well. That job is to protect lives. What is your life worth? Why would you not hire the best to keep you alive?

NOBODY working for the U.S. government (military / civilian) was bound by Iraqi law. That would be counter-productive. Contractors were still under U.S. law. Adding the UCMJ (military law) was just a response to liberal whining. Every time Blackwater fired a round, it was investigated, just like police shootings - same paperwork & process.

The BEST contractors are prior military w/ several years of superior training and experience - compared to U.S. military of 18-year-old scared kids with a machine guns. "Private military / army?" They're more like a "Private Secret Service." No contractor is doing "combat missions" or any "offensive operations." If they fire a weapon, it's in slef defense. Now try to imagine self defense, or protecting a client, in a place like Iraq or Afghanistan. It doesn't look like "mall security."

the problem i have with Private military is that they are not loyal to anybody. If iraqi pays more money then the USA to PMCs then obviously they will go against US forces even though they are on the wrong side. Look at mexico los zetas work for the highest paying client. Awesome documentary. The narration in the film comes from letters written by a contractor named "James Ashcroft". I had the luck to speak with him over the phone one day when I asked to do research for a novel idea. He's a very cool guy to talk to, and he doesn't brag at all. I believe at the time he called me he was in South Africa. It's been a year since I've spoken to him.
Also, you need to read Robert Young Pelton's "License to Kill". It's goes really good with this film.

I think most of you dont understand what merc r.Now adays mercs are big oginazation who do security jobs protech shippments or fight for ppl in war and in wars they are usealy hire to attack only some targets and will not attack others unless they have too.they are guys doing profess jobs and get payed for it like anyone else.

acually, a mercenary is someone who goes and fight for whoever pays him the most. They do not belong to a specific country or state. Than how are they mercenaries if they work for America?

No it wasn't. WW1 was Austria-Hungry & Germany vs Russia, France and the British Empire, with Japan on our side. WW2 was Germany (and her allies) and Japan vs Western Europe and the pacific.

No it wasn't.... ww1 was the Germans and her allies (Hungary etc). WW2 was the Japanese in the pacific and the Nazi's in Europe... if in any doubt, look up when the Americans dropped the a-bomb on Japan - it was in the 1940s where as WW1 was 1914-1918.

the way i see it, its the only way to get something fucking-done over there. i say we let the mercenaries kill whoever they have to. if a so called "innocent" doesnt stop his car, then they have the right to take the shot.
