  • Sigh

  • one of the most sublime guitar solos.....ever.

  • Why is Kenny G's name even mentioned in the same sentence as Pat's?

  • @RipplingOphelia If you get a chance check out the soprano sax solo on Hejira on the shadows and light album (it's not in the film ) it's the real deal by one of the Breckers I think.

  • kenny g is a golfer

  • Lyle used to come over to my house and play with my husband. Those were the days! Aspiring musicians and their passions. Pat's playing is celestial!

  • Pat still uses the same picks today.

  • Nice to see a very youthful Metheny playing his heart out. . . . he's such a kid here. . . but of course the playing is always there. . heartfelt, pretty, and then Lyle comes in making even the Oberheim patches sound good. . .and well. . a real treat!! This was quite a gathering a genius. . with of course Joni being the total surprise. .

  • awesome solo.

  • MY DREAM BAND

  • Beautiful....

  • Metheny is in a class all to himself.....as for Kenny G, I don't know what he's playing but it certainly isn't Jazz.

  • @mbschan Kenny G plays Kenny G...all he's ever played...

  • This beats Kenny G all day every day

  • Im pretty sure this sounds good to some people and i respect that but to my this sounds like crap but haha im a blues man sorry guys

  • @jofartknocker check out Pat Metheny's trio records if you haven't already. they are harder edged

  • @jofartknocker Okay go blues guy; thanks for sharing.

  • Wow, Lyle's Oberheim backing in 2:03~2:18 is same as 'September 15th(Dedicated to Bill Evans)', From Pat & Lyle's duo album 'As Falls Wichita, So falls Wichita Falls'.

  • Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  • I've always loved that- is any of that (Pat and Lyle's segment) on any of Pat's early albums? I've heard parts of songs on some of his albums that sound similiar. If not, I think this concert might be on CD.

  • I don't know what it is about his music but he has such expression when he plays. I haven't hear his latest release but he is willing to take chances. He made me a fan of Jazz.... unlike Kenny G who almost turned me off to Jazz.

  • bah finalement ,il joue pas si mal jean jacques goldman ;-)

  • fraterlucifer888 you're a moron!!

  • Wow how breathtakingly beautiful!

Pat's phrasing in this solo sounds as if it's coming out of the American Garage recording sessions....I wonder if he recorded that album shortly after this video....

  • pat metheny and lyle mays are the reason I love THE RAMONES and THE SEX PISTOLS SOOOOOO MUCH,smooth jazz is not jazz, its nauseating,,,just to be kind Metheny did play on one of my favorite albums with Jim Hall(just two guitars no cheeseball keyboard pad sounds)I know probly gonna get some haters for this , but smooth jazz should only be played in dentist office to enhance the potentcy of the novacaine

  • @fraterlucifer888 Smooth jazz isn't THAT bad. In fact, (Pat Metheny might hate me for this) but Pat has composed some songs that could be nearing the smooth jazz genre.

  • @fenderbender92 its not true, pat's music is to complex and pure and truly jazz to be called smooth jazz. Sometimes the arrangements he uses in his pieces can sound a little smooth because of the use of string pads and reverb on the guitar etc. But no, pat will never make smooth jazz he's not capable of dipping that low

  • @fraterlucifer888 smooth jazz? r u crazy...

  • @fraterlucifer888 metheny and mays both play some wild stuff on a pretty regular basis, i understand calling certain pad sounds cheesey and stuff but i don't understand how open soloing over a really simple swell pad is cheesy. are you referring more to the tone of his guitar than the actual notes and phrasing. i'm guessing if steve vai played the exact same thing with distortion and the same volume swells you would probably call it soulful.

  • @fraterlucifer888 how is this smooth jazz? just because of the keyboard sound maybe? other than this doesn't resemble smooth jazz in the slightest bit. All it really means is that you don't know how to listen. Jazz and any real music takes a skill and focus to really hear and understand, so if you dont see the beauty in this music then go listen to the ramones play three chords.

  • 1:36 love that sound Mays gets off the Oberheim

  • What a magical night.

  • I concur that that was the BEST live band Joni ever had the privilege of playing with, especially now that Brecker and Pastorius have passed. I remember going to the P.N.E. in Vancouver BC in 1980 and paying 10 bucks to see Alias, Brecker, Metheny, Mitchell, Mays, Pastorius and the Persuasions....a very memorable 3 hr. concert !!!

  • @tripleps07 I wholeheartedly agree my friend!

  • You are one lucky SOB... What a great night that must have been!

  • Wthout a doubt, the best live band she ever worked with Metheny. Mays, Pastorius, Brecker and Alias

  • And let me guess, you're the spokesperson for the morons who rail against things they can even fathom let alone come close to emulating and don't know their asses from holes in the ground let alone brilliant guitar playing when they see it?

  • D-D-D-D-Douchebag

  • Saw this tour in Toronto, I sat alone, it was the second time I had seen Joni: she is truly a magnificent artist, completely worthy of the amazing talent that surrounds her. There are very few players that could truly do her beautiful music justice: Pat Metheny is one of them.

  • One of my favorite Metheny solos and what a band Joni Mitchell put together for this: Jaco & Michael Brecker. Pure magic. Joni Mitchel, Pat & Jaco were all on top of the world back then.

  • I could listen to Pat & Lyle all day

  • More like all year

  • @mbschan Same here ...!!

  • Wouldn't mind looking like a retard if I could play like that......what a stupid comment

  • actually thats the funniest comment i've heard in a long while. I love pat metheny's playing, but also his euphoria is pretty noticeable.

  • yes

  • Nice solo Pat ... nice ass Joni ... both good.

  • yeah nice solo pat...I dont know about the second part

  • @picchaz Pat has a better ass ... I've seen it.

  • @picchaz You idiot. The only thing related to ASS is you!. In fact, you aren't fit to wipe joni's ass, loser.

  • This is a weird performance--starts with Joni's song "Amelia" and turns into one of Pat's songs, the name of which I can't remember. Would have preferred to hear "Amelia".

  • watch?v=N6d2RG2Rl64 there's Amelia, which led into this solo

  • @brainsparkles

Its actually moving from "Amelia" into this solo (check out the "Amelia" video from this same set, it ends with the transition into this performance).

  • Pat Metheny gitaristo virtuoso!!!

  • The other guitar player's tone is a bit crunchy. don't like it.

  • hahahahahah ive never seen a strap like that. im def getting one.

  • Sublime, beautiful. Plays his heart out...

  • @bbagginz you are right on about Metheny!

  • Pat Metheny solo relax...

  • Oneheart75...you don't know where he's coming from? Well that's obvious.

  • there is no "n°1" guitar player, there are too many awesome players in this world (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Christophe Godin, Mike Stern...) it's all a matter of taste

  • Ehh Joni.. problems choosing the right clothes?

  • Hey Pat, where's your stripy French fisherman's shirt?

    ;-)

  • What a amazing melody of guiter.

    I love Pat Metheny.......

  • got this only concert from her but she is amazing, i wish i could be with a woman with such a talent, not only beauty...

  • Pat Metheny is fantastic. But I like the sound of Joni Mitchell's guitar here. Does anyone know how to get this sound on the guitar?

  • At that time Joni uses a Roland Jazz chorus with her Ibanez GB guitar...

  • Look His face...Half of him is making love with the guitar, the other half is fighting with her...

  • Pat solo +1000 by Daivis Dvareckas

    guitaristtttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt jazz

  • This looks like the Mingus tour -- gosh it's been a long time. I saw her on this tour in Philadelphia at the Mann. Jaco and Michael Brecker were also on board. I think this was the end of her peak musically. Just my opinion, o'course.

  • what type of scale is he using?

  • A super one! lol

  • Comment removed

  • Metheny thinks all his notes. Especially during this period, i am sure the solo was prepared. too perfect to be a one shot fully improvised piece.

It is nevertheless an incredible solo from my favorite guitar player. To me the best ever full stop.

  • Ok yeah I know he thinks all of his notes. When I said that he wasn't thinking about it, I meant he knows scales and how to voice what he hears and thinks in his head that he doesn't have to think about it, it effortlessly flows in his improvisation and compositions.

  • wow, this is the frst time i really heard this guy's playing. what are some good albums by him?

  • Well, I have to say Bright Size Life because it's simple, melodic and has Jaco on it. I also like his trio project and also albums like Letter from home and Still Life Talking which is by the Pat Methent group. I don't really like the soundscape and all that on those albums but you can't critisize his musicality

  • Bright Size Life (one of his first records), and, if you want to listen recent works, the one he has made with Brad Mehldau.

  • wow dude he is huge ! get anything especially from his Pat Metheny Group, (still life, speaking of now...) and any of his solo stuff

  • My favorite is Bright Size Life, but I would also recommend The Way Up, by the Pat Metheny Group. Great listening experience.

  • I saw the Way Up live in Seoul back in 2005. I'm actually in the audience on the DVD ;-). What an amazing album/song. Pat Metheny takes music to new heights.

  • What year is this?

  • '79

  • he'd already got his own sound at that time. he's true genius!

  • No words to express how this makes me feel. Been a fan of Joni's since Woodstock and Pat's since "Missouri Sky". OMG.

  • O Principe dos Reis!

  • GLORIOSOS !!!!

  • Fantasic playing from a great album.

  • Esse solo é um dos mais lindos e emocionados que já ouvi do Deus Pat Metheny.

  • Creazy little thing called Metheny!

  • il aurait pu chanter "quand la musique est bonne".... ;-)

plaisanterie mise a part, quelle putain de dream team derriere joni mitchell

  • A fond !

  • This solo is so mesmerizing I have listened to it over and over again and I can't get enough of it. Pat Methany is my favorite guitar player bar none. His lines transcend chord progressions, and his ideas are totally plugged into the source.

  • what guitar is he using plz?

  • I think it's a Gibson ES 175, which he used for years but is now too old to travel. Now he uses Ibanez

  • Correct ES 175. Strings 11-49. Note the missing bridge pick up covered with Panzer band?. Anyway great sound, two delays 13ms and 26 ms if i can recall well. Nevertheless the fingers of Mr Metheny are making the sound not the guitar!

  • are you sure? i've never seen an ES-175 with the selector switch on the lower horn (you can see the hole left by the removal).

  • No switch dude. Only a neck pick up. I thought the tape was covering the bridge pick up spot, but pay attention on the volume and trebble pots. there are only 2 instead of 4 on a usual ES 175. No pick guard either. But you are right an ES 175 has usually the selector on the upper part (I have one:))

  • then what;s the hole near the bottom horn?

  • No one has ever played a better guitar. Ever. Everyone listen to to again and again. Wow!

  • pat metheny has mojo

  • today is the first time i hear this guy. i love it directly! i can already say i'm gonna be HEAVY ADDICT from this stuff... yeah!!!

  • once upon a time pat metheny was a little boy.

  • ..godo ..grazie pat

  • Petras metinis gerai groja ir dar jaunas!!!!!!

  • The fickly notes never stumble.

    Pure genius.

    A guitar god.

  • Yeah, I hear you all...but his solo is GREAT!

    Thank you.

  • Have you EVER seen Mike Stern play a hollowbody? Hard to miss that and the authentic early Metheny sound.

  • LOL, I thought that was Mike Stern at first :D

  • Pat Metheny is probably the best guitarist I've ever heard

  • Pure beauty.

  • pat and his gibson that fuckers worth a fortune... I love his Ibanez sound tho Ibanez all da way babie.. I like how Joni has the george benson model.. both sick guitars

  • è ipnotico, magnetico, un modo di suonare unico

  • MERAVIGLIOSO!!!!

  • I've never seen anyone hold a pic like that before, but the guy's great :-)

  • it give him that articulation he wants.. it's odd tho i kno.. looks like he almost used the middle anf first finger with the thumbs exc... but dam neccesity is the mother of invention and he reinvented the guitar for the masses...

  • he uses really thin picks. for harder articulations he bends the pick. uses thumb, index and possibly middle i believe.

  • I always see him with these red pics. any idea what they are?

  • sorry, i have no idea. i just know he uses 3 fingers to hold the pick and bends it when he wants harder attack.

  • they are planet waves with his name on them. the thickness is curiously not written. I play 1,14, i would say it is close to 0,50, very thin indeed. He bends it and uses the in fact the round side of the pick. very effective when you master the angle to get a warm deep sound. I got this from one of his concert in Burlington. happy to share, for me, he is the greatest

  • He likes the color red

  • The master of musical wallpaper.

  • is that really pat???

  • yes and he is awesome here

  • yes that really pat when was young

  • THIS is 3 minutes of magic!

what he does here is amazing...

  • immenso pat

  • 1:38 had me slackjawed... his rhythm and timing, there's so much consideration on making it as powerful as possible. And it hits right where it needs to.

  • This stuff that Pat and Lyle play is so darn sad. But I love it. If you've ever see n the movie Fandango, their background music makes the sadness of the scene where all the friends go their separate ways really come out. It's really something, but for goodness sakes it makes you want to jump off a cliff

  • 2:00 on sounds like "September fifteenth" from the "As falls Wichita..." album

  • in the days when pat was still playing gibsons, hanging with lyle and making the music which first switched me on to his style.... top notch... and yes i too think joni's got a nice butt in this !!

  • What a great player he is, but there should have been an international treaty banning chorusing on guitars. It's such a distracting effect.

  • what a team !!!

  • oh come on. i guess i'm gonna have to say it. look at that butt on joni mitchell. anyone? anyone?

  • i agree :20

  • Joni is among the five most desirable woman in the world . . . to me!

  • We're with you

  • Hmm, don't want to burst your bubble or anything but this was recorded in 1980, yep that's near 30 years ago, joni must be getting on for 70 these days.

  • That's OK, bazonics. I'm 52 . . . Joni is surely even more beautiful now, her spirit having grown fully and preparing to leave us . . . .

  • 0:18. we got a winner!

  • O my god what an amazing player...even at berklee, I still will never truly understand his genious!

  • SICK!!!

  • Yeah amazing band. And right there in time and quality with Zappa's incredible band with Underwood, Bozio, Duke, Fowler, etc.

funkyalfonso- I'm with you man, that solo from Joes' Garage is one of he best ever. I'm also extremely fond of Black Napkins.

And Steely Dan doing their best work...

Those were some fine days to be alive!

  • the video was put out by Warner Bros. on VHS a decade or so ago entitled Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light. Don't know if it is on dvd.

That was a hell of an outfit behind Joni and she never sounded better before or since in my opinion.

  • Absolutely. And I was fortunate enough to been at this very show in 1979. Jaco, Pat, Michael Brecker et. all. The best band Joni ever had. It was pure magic.

  • yeah it's out on DVD

  • I'm not ashamed to say that this music is so incredibly hauntingly beautiful it made me cry. Does anyone know the name of the video it's from and where can I buy a copy?

  • it says in the description

  • Oooooooooooooooo ... What emotions

  • As falls if you can handle it.

  • wanker

  • Mate there are so many of them about it barely is worth noting. Chin up. Forget the cunt exists. The music of course stunning. x

  • we have here a good shot of joni's booty... what's up with those green pants?

  • I'm new to mr. metheny's tunes, Any1 have any suggestions as to what other songs I should look up? (btw, I play guitar/piano...mostly progressive rock or metal, but I want to add a jazzy feel to some o' my stuff.)

    Thanks

  • Are you going with me

    Minuano

    San Lorenzo

The way up (album) the album is amazing but you really need to listen to it in its entirety to appreciate it.

  • are you going with me is one of my favs , with anna jopek . also check out as it is, the live one and slip away.

  • Don't forget the Bright Size Life album. The latest trio album (with Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez) is amazing as well. I'm into prog as well, but studying jazz to support playing just that and fusion!

  • listen to "bright size life" with jaco pastorius, his first album at ECM, also listen to "new chautauqua" a solo album also at ECM, for my taste they are his best recordings.

    have a nice time.

  • I'd say start with his first album; Bright Size Life under ECM. With Moses (drums) and Pastorius (Bass).

    Enjoy!

  • fantastique .tu est le roi de la guitare.raf
