@persuasion7780 I discovered it on a compilation called A History of Garage and Frat Bands in Memphis, TN or something to that effect. I was in a record store in Kalamazoo, MI where I'm from and the clerk was listening to that comp., this song grabbed me by the heart and tugged me in so I ordered a copy! It's a wonderful song and recording!
@persuasion7780 I am so happy I get to tell the lead singer of the YO YOs how much I LOVE this song . I found out about the Yo Yos in Oxford American magazine. You guys did such a good job on this record, the emotions flow right through to the listener. Thank you Rusty Taylor, and the rest of the Yo Yos !
that cover version is by far the best version of the song (I mean way better than the Billy Joe Royal/Joe South versions ; the way of singing the verses is just amazing... in my top five of the best songs of the sixties (I used to cover it with my band) ; it would have deserve its place on the shutdown 66 comp. Great job, thanks Rusty (and thanks to Shangri Las rds).
