There isn't lag, it's the animation before the action. Luigi winds up before chopping the tree, and the girl twirls her shovel before digging.

Yes, I know that. But when you are not online, you do not perform those actions before you dig a hole, or cut down a tree. I covers up for the half a second lag it takes to dig a hole/cut a tree down. Animal Crossing Wild World did the same thing.
