@FaunsAfternoon Why do you think Hayley has performed this badly, true I admit that she does not have a naturally operatic voice but she has put her own label on this song and made listening to it very enjoyable in my view
I think she went about singing this all wrong. The Vibratto was not there at all. And the her voice type doesn't fit the song. Did it sound good? It depends on the listener. I didn't really like it because I know how its supposed to sound. Try listening to Leontyne Price sing this song, and compare it. POLAR OPPOSITES. But I do commend Hayley for trying, so Bravo.
@viago2 false trained opera voice?? IT'S AN ART. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK HARD TO PERFECT IT. Opera is not natural, nor has anyone claimed it is. It's hugely impressive and beautiful to hear a true trained voice (not the beautiful Haley, sorry) perform it. Unbelievable what kind of absurdity some people possess.
Not as heady and full bodiesas the original madame, but light as a bell, and youthful. THough I prefer the original, this one wasnt a complete waste of time.
It's undeniable that Westenra has a beautiful voice - but her performance is utterly lacking in expression and meaning. She just sounds so happy - which considering the emotion that Lauretta is experiencing when this aria is sung, is completely incongruous. Ultimately, opera exists to tell a story - and this performance fails to achieve that.
@milenymama That's a ridiculous comparison. Hayley is an experienced singer, who sings in a natural, soprano voice, not a trained, forced operatic voice. I really don't like opera singers at all. The vibrato and the weird yawning way they sing ruins the beauty of the song. They make it sound really boring. I never liked operatic arias that much until I heard Hayley's versions. That's what's great about these singers. They attract fans who might never like these songs otherwise.
I have to say it but this woman’s interpretation of this aria by Puccini makes me think of what it would be like to watch the role of Juliet (from Romeo And Juliet) being played by a porno actress who is doing her first film with sound.
@truvianni that is not very nice. She is not an opera singer, but has a clear, light voice, preferred by most people. I personally did not care for her interpretation,as a Lyric Soprano myself, but it is not as bad as you make it out to be...
@TheOnlyAlexandra I was merely expressing my honest and sincere opinion as an opera fan who has been listening to opera his whole life and has heard this aria performed by all the greats such as Te Kenawa,Southerland,Gheorghiu and I feel this woman should stick to pop music as should all the other popera singers.
Hayley you are a credit to our country and you sing this beautiful aria the way you feel it. No one would disagree that this young woman has a beautiful voice, but in opera there are other things that make a great difference to us (who go to the opera regularly and love it) The way in which the language is treated, the way in which the melodic line is carried out and the warmth and depth of the voice tells us if we are listening to an opera singer. And most others almost have it. The problem is: we can't seem to define..."IT".
And that's what we're trying to do with Jackie. She has "IT".
When I first heard Jackie, on AGT last year, and people were going crazy about her, I thought to myself..."is she really that special?" Well, now, after listening to every female classical music singer I could find...child and adult...I've concluded: Yes...she's really that special. Of course, it's always subjective. And it's not just the voice. To me, it's the emotion, passion and delivery, as well. Hayley comes close...as well as Sissel. But again, it is an individual preference.
Yes, Jackie does have a fuller tone but you do realize that she's singing this piece a full step lower than the original key? That makes a huge difference.
@Velvet4U, Jackie's cute but she's really no different that many child singers her age. The only difference is she got training and was able to get on tv. She probably won't carry her voice over into adulthood.
There is no specific way to sing a song or an aria....the point is what it needs to convey...Since when the music language obtained levels or labels? She has made me cry so that is more than enough....I study classical singing for many years now and no classical singer has made me feel like this about this aria....Bravo Hayley <3 you are unique
@1AdrianR I know, but each composer who's now known and whose pieces are part of a singer's repertoire was a revolution ...Each era's composition is a revolution to the previous one...That is the thing about Hayley she brakes the rules, she gives us a new way, her way, she is something new, a very new and lovely combination of the present and the past
@FaunsAfternoon FALSE! Opera is ALL about the voice. There is a VERY specific way to sing an operatic aria. Of course interpretation is left up to the singer, but vocally the voice should be operatic or "classical" in nature. People train for YEARS to get that kind of voice, just as ballerinas don't just wake up and posses the talent of a seasoned dancer. Just because she can sing the notes doesn't make her an opera singer.
@AlexiaHollerdude I did not call her an opera singer...I called her a singer with a rare gift and color that moved me and a color that no operatic singer has given me the same way yet...But still this is my personal opinion...I know how opera works I love opera and I praise its values and the struggle it takes for a singer to be an opera singer..
You statement is ridicolous. What do you mean? I've got a beautiful voice, so I can sing in tune tenor arias...So I'm an opera singer?
Listen to Andrea Bocelli singing belcanto arias like "Pour mon ame" or "A te o cara", and as the pain gets deeper and deeper you'll understand that you're digging for gold in a "copper mine".
@FaunsAfternoon i disagree... there are specific conventions as on how to sign certain tipology of music. You shall know after studying classical music. But of course, this is my own opinion after studying all types of music for more than 20 years...
Do I think this type of vocalization. Not for this song, it sounds flat and cocky. I am sure in a different type of music she is going to sound astonishing. But again, it is my opinion and not meant to hurt anybody.
@FaunsAfternoon classical music's sole purpose is not making people cry. For me it's even painful to hear her. She's pretty I'll give her that but you should know better those two are different.
If it REALLY made you cry you should give double credit to Puccini because his music is so beautiful that it might evoke such emotions even if it's performed terribly.
@operagirl121 ew NO! The Phantom of the Opera (which is a musical about an opera house, not an opera itself) MOVIE is an insult to mankind. Besides that she IS a very good singer, but she should stay away from opera. There is specific and trained technique and skill that goes with singing these songs and she does not have it. Once again, so I cannot be accused of "hatin'" she is a very good singer in her own style, which is not opera.
@Broadway3 Please, calm down! I have the right to voice my opinion, and I think that Haley's voice has some similar qualities to Emmy Rossum's.You have the right to voice your thoughts too,BUT that does not give you the right to insult people and try to make them look ignorant and inferior. So, no need to try and show me how much you THINK you know because there is really no need! I am sure that Giacomo Puccini, would have no problem with Haley singing this song in her own unique style.
@operagirl121 I am quite calm and I think the way you took my comment is actually a reflection on you, my dear. And I DID say that she is a very good singer in her own way
@operagirl121 lol i dont get that, her voice is much more trained, and higher, and purer than emmy's. ^^ Emmy's is pretty but Hayley just NAILS soprano notes.
Whatever the technical merits of singers, and I see we have a few purists here, the most important thing you can do with a song, apart from singing it well, is to make it your own. This (young!) girl sings beautifully, with a grace and purity that marks it out as truly individual. The way she places notes so gently is wonderful. Let's hope she doesn't do a Charlotte Church and squander it all...
OMG it is here too, CC and Opera is about to go to war, I googled "O Mio Babbino Caro" because I wanted to compare other singers to how Evancho sings it and whether its and opera singer such as Renee Fleming or CC as Hayley Westenra there seems to be some type of war going on. To tell the truth I couldn't tell just by listening to different singers if they are CC or Opera. Have to say Hayley sound very good one of the best to my ears.
My singing teacher has given me this song to learn. There is no way I could ever sing this even nearly as good as she does. Her voice is amazingly beautiful. Jealous O.O <3
I'm an opera freak and I like more legato, but I agree with other posters......and yes, this would probably be closer to what Puccini intended. And to be honest, for the purists, is it less ridiculous than some busty 40+ year old woman playing a young girl singing this to her daddy...........I just realized how wrong that sounded. Beautiful job Hayley!
I think this version is a lot more true to the character from the opera Gianni Schicchi. She's begging her father not to hate her choice of love, basically because she would die without him. I think it sounds a lot better sung with a softer voice.
Thank God she doesn't use that horrible (obsolete) operatic style! This is infinitely better than that pretentious warbling stuff: it's pure and crystalline.
Her voice is very crisp and clear and GORGEOUS on many many other songs. It is GORGEOUS on this song it just does not compliment the way the song was written or the song does not compliment her. Her voice is crisp and clean and her vowels are not rich the way a classically trained voice is. Her voice is beautiful and nobody denies that. It is merely that the song does not compliment her voice or her voice does not compliment the song.
Okay, it's not so much that she doesn't have an "operatic" voice -- she is breathy and light, and that's obviously what she's going for -- it's pretty in a very simple way. But I can't get past the loss of line... every word is separated. She clearly has many fans who are offended if anyone points out her unusual style.
The way she sing is not compatible with the text. A girl that is fighting with his dad that wanna broke her relationship and that she threat suicide dont sing as a lullaby. I dont care if she ia a nice girl or if she a have nice voice, PLEASE STOP WITH THESE "SINGERS" THAT RUIN MASTERWORKS IN THE NAME OF THE BUSINESS.
Like many others, I just watched many versions of this song. This one is the purest, the youngest - I feel it's about an (almost) teenager, naive girl. It's not belcanto - so what? It's just beautiful.
Well this is not the classical opera style singing, it sounds like a Celtic voice singing it. It's not for an opera setting, but that's not to take away from the fact that it sounds very sweet and breezy.
@nuovazeta Alvin and the Chipmunks could NOT survive this song. The high notes, men can't do. Only Women. Well maybe men can but it is not the same beauty as a female. And this song is for a Soprano Female.
I'm not an expert, but is it me or does she have some diction problem? Usually words are distinct but not here. It's a bit annoying because it's blurry.
This is just an awesome performance!!! Remeber, it doesn't need to be better than the original (which is not), it's just different. it's just HER interpretation of the song. Her voice is really sweet, and I really love it!!!
@Castlle But then, according to this rationale, my interpretation would be as good as any, although I'm a male tenor. It's not better than the original, it's (very!) different. It's just my interpretation.
Well the purists have driven the vision of beauty off the stage of life, for is not true beauty for the eye, or ear for that matter of the beholder. I am sure Mr. Puccini would not have objected at all to this performance, on the contrary, it was for a voice like this that this song was created.
Italiano O mio babbino caro Mi piace è bello, bello Vo' andare in Porta Rossa a comperar l'anello! Sì, sì, ci voglio andare! e se l'amassi indarno, andrei sul Ponte Vecchio, ma per buttarmi in Arno! Mi struggo e mi tormento! O Dio, vorrei morir! Babbo, pietà, pietà! Babbo, pietà, pietà!
I personally found the sound to be very pop-style sounding. However, if she decides to pursue serious training, I think she could sing this piece much better, as her sound will hopefully sound more mature and developed.
The voice almost sounds as if it's coming through a machine. There's both a nasal tone and a pre-teen "pop" sound that is at the very least hard to get used to, if you've been used to Kiri Te Kanawa and Renee Fleming, for example, singing this piece. She's a beautiful girl and if she brings this music to more people I'm all for it, but I'd never buy her CDs.
oh yeah, it's not 'opera' singing.....could it be any better...?? hmmm, critics who can't do sh_t always 'criticize',.....'very sweet'....you condescending snob..!
If you understand the story behind this song , you would find that it is about a young girl who is telling her father that she wants to be with a young man that her father does not approve of - so it makes more sense for a very young woman to sing this song than a more mature woman who would probably not be living in her father's house. That is what Puccini probably originally had in his mind , so this young woman's voice fits the original story.
@marleonetti5 the thing is though that in opera. Arias are written for voices, not people. you see the story is being told through the voice not the appearance unlike movies or plays a sopranos appearance is of little to no matter. while this aria was written about a young woman, its intended sound is for a more mature soprano to sing. that's not to say this rendition is bad its only that it lacks a certain vocal maturity that only more mature sopranos can bring.
I don't mind Hayley's voice, but I don't know why the whole world has got her singing opera. It's missing the feeling, the style, the connection with the text... This new habit of turning every semi-classical voice into a "popera" singer is ruining opera for its listeners, and is very much limiting the output of these popera singers as well.
Every phrase is exactly the same, there is no connection to the meaning of each word... She might as well be playing the tune on a flute. That is the real distinction of singers, communication of text, not just communication of an overarching emotion. Elevator music for elevator people who don't want to engage with the music any deeper than experiencing "what the music does to me"... very passive.
personally, I don't care whether people class this as opera singing or not.
in my opinion, she can hit that top A flat better than a lot of "proper" opera singers.
and i feel like i can relate to her style of singing the most, having to sing this song for my 5th year exams myself, and having very limited vibrato or acting skills.
may I ask why is she not considered an opera singer? And I ask this simply because I don't know much about the Opera world and its technicalities. ( sorry for the mistakes, English is not my language :) ) thank you
@MilaApple Opera singers sing in live operas in opera theaters where there are no microphones. The sound is different, the requirements for near-perfection are very high. Opera singers need to act;. If you listen to say Ruth Ann Swenson or Angela Gheorghiu or Anna Netrebko singing it, you'd hear the difference. Better yet, if you want to see how it is performed in opera, search here for "Gianni Schicchi Met", it's from live opera performance, subtitled too. You'll hear the difference.
@MilaApple I meant, search for "O mio babbino caro Gianni Schicchi Met" - this will give you a scene from a live performance of this opera at the Met. This will give you a subtitled performance of this aria on stage of the Met as part of an opera performance, and will give you an idea of what opera singers do.
@jewelmarkess Oh thank you :) Actualy, right after I wrote the comment I went and looked up other versions. I stumbled upon Anna Netrebko and truly noticed a major difference while watching and listening to Montserrat Caballe as she performed. I now understand why my mother is so in aw infront of her! :) Thank you for taking some of your time to answer me. And I will go and look for the other names you mentioned :)
Of course not she has not been corrupted by opera yet. After all opera is for those who sing and those who wished they could. The corrupt of course are those that wish they could sing like this angel. So they become critics instead. There are more crtitics these days than actual opera stars, of course most of them end up on You Tube.
it's true, it's not opera. but there's something in the sweetness of her young, girlish voice that is somehow more apt for the character singing in the song, than the full voice of a large, middle-aged female opera singer. that's what makes it charming, despite the lack of technical operatic skill.
@falalala125 Not all opera singers are large, and many are younger then middle aged. Check out Nadine Sierra singing this at 16 or 21. Or Tunde Franco...
I've heard many versions of singing this song and this is my favorite one. Every song can be sung in different way as long as it can make people move. Music is no limitation!
@wishingonthemoon1 right but then she should stick to non-opera songs. I agree her voice is BEAUTIFUL, but she shouldn't be singing something not suited to her voice. She just doesnt sing in a classical style, or even a classical crossover. She's singing it like it's a musical theatre soprano song, but it isn't, it's from a real opera, Gianni Schicci. The only reason shes doing this is probably because all the "classical crossovers" do it because its the easiest aria to do, and everyone loves it
Pretty, but she just doesn't have the training to do this aria justice (before you poke at me, neither do I--and that's why I wouldn't perform it). Pie Jesu is a much better song for her--it gives me chills to hear her sing that. :-)
I love that version and Hayley is great as always. I agree with those who think she isn't trained as an opera singer, but her version has her sensibility and purety nevertheless. I prefer the live version by the way.
@FaunsAfternoon Why do you think Hayley has performed this badly, true I admit that she does not have a naturally operatic voice but she has put her own label on this song and made listening to it very enjoyable in my view

@sprayberryjoy ok, 1) my opinions may appear absurd to you but that is merely a comment about your own intolerance.
2) i did not suggest that the operatic voice isnt supposed to be hard work.
3) "opera is not natural" = false in my book! learn english!
4) any composer prays for the performance of his work that moves the audience, this does. the operatic voice does not,
5) there are occasions when you may be right.

Well, now, after listening to every female classical music singer I could find...child and adult...I've concluded: Yes...she's really that special. Of course, it's always subjective. And it's not just the voice. To me, it's the emotion, passion and delivery, as well. Hayley comes close...as well as Sissel. But again, it is an individual preference.
Mrsawyer46 4 months ago
Yes, Jackie does have a fuller tone but you do realize that she's singing this piece a full step lower than the original key? That makes a huge difference.
eastoforion 4 months ago
Jackie Evancho is better. Why? Because Jackie has a fuller tone.
And Jackie also completes her words in a verse.
Hayley just leaves off the end of words, and also,
Hayley hits high notes in acapella fashion - which is very easy to do.
Jackie , on the other hand , Belts out high notes with full tone and virbrato,
which is very hard to do, and sounds much more musical.
I could listen to Jackie sing ALL DAY LONG. But I could only take 5 minutes of Hayley
Velvet4U 4 months ago
@Velvet4U I like both ^^- With Jackie because the song makes more sence and it's sweet, and with Hayley because it sounds soothing, at least to me =)

FaunsAfternoon 4 months ago 16
@FaunsAfternoon Well, there actually are specific 'ways' to sing arias, largely depending on the composer and era.
1AdrianR 4 months ago
@1AdrianR I know, but each composer who's now known and whose pieces are part of a singer's repertoire was a revolution ...Each era's composition is a revolution to the previous one...That is the thing about Hayley she brakes the rules, she gives us a new way, her way, she is something new, a very new and lovely combination of the present and the past
FaunsAfternoon 1 month ago
@FaunsAfternoon FALSE! Opera is ALL about the voice. There is a VERY specific way to sing an operatic aria. Of course interpretation is left up to the singer, but vocally the voice should be operatic or "classical" in nature. People train for YEARS to get that kind of voice, just as ballerinas don't just wake up and posses the talent of a seasoned dancer. Just because she can sing the notes doesn't make her an opera singer.
AlexiaHollerdude 2 weeks ago 4
@AlexiaHollerdude I did not call her an opera singer...I called her a singer with a rare gift and color that moved me and a color that no operatic singer has given me the same way yet...But still this is my personal opinion...I know how opera works I love opera and I praise its values and the struggle it takes for a singer to be an opera singer..
FaunsAfternoon 2 weeks ago
@FaunsAfternoon
You statement is ridicolous. What do you mean? I've got a beautiful voice, so I can sing in tune tenor arias...So I'm an opera singer?
Listen to Andrea Bocelli singing belcanto arias like "Pour mon ame" or "A te o cara", and as the pain gets deeper and deeper you'll understand that you're digging for gold in a "copper mine".
kablue79 1 week ago
@FaunsAfternoon i disagree... there are specific conventions as on how to sign certain tipology of music. You shall know after studying classical music. But of course, this is my own opinion after studying all types of music for more than 20 years...
Do I think this type of vocalization. Not for this song, it sounds flat and cocky. I am sure in a different type of music she is going to sound astonishing. But again, it is my opinion and not meant to hurt anybody.
Erethras 1 week ago
@FaunsAfternoon classical music's sole purpose is not making people cry. For me it's even painful to hear her. She's pretty I'll give her that but you should know better those two are different.
If it REALLY made you cry you should give double credit to Puccini because his music is so beautiful that it might evoke such emotions even if it's performed terribly.

operagirl121 5 months ago
@operagirl121 ew NO! The Phantom of the Opera (which is a musical about an opera house, not an opera itself) MOVIE is an insult to mankind. Besides that she IS a very good singer, but she should stay away from opera. There is specific and trained technique and skill that goes with singing these songs and she does not have it. Once again, so I cannot be accused of "hatin'" she is a very good singer in her own style, which is not opera.
Broadway3 5 months ago
@Broadway3 Please, calm down! I have the right to voice my opinion, and I think that Haley's voice has some similar qualities to Emmy Rossum's.You have the right to voice your thoughts too,BUT that does not give you the right to insult people and try to make them look ignorant and inferior. So, no need to try and show me how much you THINK you know because there is really no need! I am sure that Giacomo Puccini, would have no problem with Haley singing this song in her own unique style.

Beautiful job Hayley!
franz0woyzeck 7 months ago 2
I think this version is a lot more true to the character from the opera Gianni Schicchi. She's begging her father not to hate her choice of love, basically because she would die without him. I think it sounds a lot better sung with a softer voice.

Thank God she doesn't use that horrible (obsolete) operatic style! This is infinitely better than that pretentious warbling stuff: it's pure and crystalline.
a1scam 8 months ago
Her voice is very crisp and clear and GORGEOUS on many many other songs. It is GORGEOUS on this song it just does not compliment the way the song was written or the song does not compliment her. Her voice is crisp and clean and her vowels are not rich the way a classically trained voice is. Her voice is beautiful and nobody denies that. It is merely that the song does not compliment her voice or her voice does not compliment the song.
Misscommentator 8 months ago
Okay, it's not so much that she doesn't have an "operatic" voice -- she is breathy and light, and that's obviously what she's going for -- it's pretty in a very simple way. But I can't get past the loss of line... every word is separated. She clearly has many fans who are offended if anyone points out her unusual style.

Well the purists have driven the vision of beauty off the stage of life, for is not true beauty for the eye, or ear for that matter of the beholder. I am sure Mr. Puccini would not have objected at all to this performance, on the contrary, it was for a voice like this that this song was created.

The voice almost sounds as if it's coming through a machine. There's both a nasal tone and a pre-teen "pop" sound that is at the very least hard to get used to, if you've been used to Kiri Te Kanawa and Renee Fleming, for example, singing this piece. She's a beautiful girl and if she brings this music to more people I'm all for it, but I'd never buy her CDs.

novokarpati 1 year ago
If you understand the story behind this song , you would find that it is about a young girl who is telling her father that she wants to be with a young man that her father does not approve of - so it makes more sense for a very young woman to sing this song than a more mature woman who would probably not be living in her father's house. That is what Puccini probably originally had in his mind , so this young woman's voice fits the original story.
marleonetti5 1 year ago
@marleonetti5 the thing is though that in opera. Arias are written for voices, not people. you see the story is being told through the voice not the appearance unlike movies or plays a sopranos appearance is of little to no matter. while this aria was written about a young woman, its intended sound is for a more mature soprano to sing. that's not to say this rendition is bad its only that it lacks a certain vocal maturity that only more mature sopranos can bring.

I don't mind Hayley's voice, but I don't know why the whole world has got her singing opera. It's missing the feeling, the style, the connection with the text... This new habit of turning every semi-classical voice into a "popera" singer is ruining opera for its listeners, and is very much limiting the output of these popera singers as well.
xXzombieXx 1 year ago
Every phrase is exactly the same, there is no connection to the meaning of each word... She might as well be playing the tune on a flute. That is the real distinction of singers, communication of text, not just communication of an overarching emotion. Elevator music for elevator people who don't want to engage with the music any deeper than experiencing "what the music does to me"... very passive.

MilaApple 1 year ago
@MilaApple Opera singers sing in live operas in opera theaters where there are no microphones. The sound is different, the requirements for near-perfection are very high. Opera singers need to act;. If you listen to say Ruth Ann Swenson or Angela Gheorghiu or Anna Netrebko singing it, you'd hear the difference. Better yet, if you want to see how it is performed in opera, search here for "Gianni Schicchi Met", it's from live opera performance, subtitled too. You'll hear the difference.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@MilaApple I meant, search for "O mio babbino caro Gianni Schicchi Met" - this will give you a scene from a live performance of this opera at the Met. This will give you a subtitled performance of this aria on stage of the Met as part of an opera performance, and will give you an idea of what opera singers do.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@jewelmarkess Oh thank you :) Actualy, right after I wrote the comment I went and looked up other versions. Of course not she has not been corrupted by opera yet. After all opera is for those who sing and those who wished they could. The corrupt of course are those that wish they could sing like this angel. So they become critics instead. There are more crtitics these days than actual opera stars, of course most of them end up on You Tube.

it's true, it's not opera. but there's something in the sweetness of her young, girlish voice that is somehow more apt for the character singing in the song, than the full voice of a large, middle-aged female opera singer. that's what makes it charming, despite the lack of technical operatic skill.

wishingonthemoon1 1 year ago 3
@wishingonthemoon1 right but then she should stick to non-opera songs. I agree her voice is BEAUTIFUL, but she shouldn't be singing something not suited to her voice. She just doesnt sing in a classical style, or even a classical crossover. She's singing it like it's a musical theatre soprano song, but it isn't, it's from a real opera, Gianni Schicci. The only reason shes doing this is probably because all the "classical crossovers" do it because its the easiest aria to do, and everyone loves it
