Unfortunately, these monks have not kept much of their ancient musical heritage, viz. Gregorian Chant in Latin. One hopes that the liturgy in the vernacular approximates the beauty of the Latin Chant enough to appeal to the hearts of the young!
I find so many of these comments just plain silly...You either decide to live the monastic life or not...for whatever time period. I hear so much confusion in some of these posts...so much gulit! It's not needed!!!
@kennyinliverpool The Catholic Church has nothing against homosexual people. It just asks that they live accordingly in chastity. As a monk, you are called to poverty, chastity, and obedience anyway. I would suggest getting in contact with a local monastery, and attending a discernment retreat, or getting into contact with monks and talking about it.
Even as an adamant atheist, I am moved by the Benedictine life and many of its values. The rule of St. Benedict is a beautiful text which even an urban, secular scholar such as myself can appreciate.
I had the privellage of attending Mt Angel Seminary between 1980-84 and while I went on to do other things with my life the lessons I learned while on "the Hill" have stayed with me. Mount Angel is a wonder filled place.
This is a great video, but I find myself somewhat torn concerning my future. Part of me wants to become a Diocesan Priest, and work at a church or cathedral. But then another part of me wants to become a Benedictine Monk and live at a monastery. If anyone reads this please pray for me so that I can realize where God wants to lead me.
@FaithandTradition You might want to go to a monastic discernment retreat. They are having one at Mt. Angel soon and have them throughout the year. They are very informative and give you a chance to talk with other monks about how they knew they were called to this life. God bless
@SacredHeartChurch That sounds like a very good idea to me. I might look into visiting the St. Meinrad Archabbey here in Indiana to get an idea. I've been comparing the Priesthood to the OSB, and the OSB has been looking more and more appealing. I will definetly use my time at Seminary for discernment, and I pray that God will continue to guide me. God bless you too.
@FaithandTradition There is also other religious communities that might be a good fit. I am considering some of the same issues and have found that the Dominicans maybe a good fit. Lots of learning and study and community but also a large part is preaching and going out to "the people" and helping bring them to Jesus and God.
I too was called to diocesan priesthood and was accepted by the Arch Diocese of San Francisco. However I ended up with the Franciscans who introduced me to the Benedictine Monks. Never experiencing the monks before I knew when I attended my first vespers that this was really my calling. For me the stability, prayer and work of a monastery is appealing. Visit abbey's and test your vocation as a monk. Remember that God will guide you to the place he wants you to be.
@FaithandTradition: I am torn by the same descision, i feel a calling, a vocation if you will, to enter into religous life but im uncertain and afraid.
Monastic life is different from the life of friars. There is also a wide range of customs and polity among Benedictine houses. Benedictine houses differ greatly depending on the Benedictine congregation they are a part of.
thank you God for giving us the men who you have given a special grace to live out their vocation that you have called them too..How I love to take my retreats with them..I am their sister in christ...thank you for giving me the balance in my life / st, benedicts way... I am catholic christian.....jesus thank you..for their prayers for the world all unbelivers and believers...Pax Christi from your sister in christ caos....cathrine
I tell you my fellow Christians, that all the sins in this world is accountable to the churches, for if they only unite and upheld free giving instead of buying and selling, there could be no robber and thieves among them, nor is there a chance for athiestic view to rise. The Way of God had suffered abusive speech from the enemies of God because the churches are harlot.
You sound like a true vigilant. The Word of God is not suffered abusive because of speech. It suffered abusive because you interpreted it differently. A lunatic like you will never find the true meaning of scripture because of anger. So shout up and read the Bible
the rule of S Benedict is based on the Rule of Saint Basil the Greate for that i believe that brothers of S Benedict is close to our Liturgical Tradition. May God help them and bless them !!
do monks get vacations? I worry that that anybody would just burn out after a while but then again if this is a calling then that may not happen...still i wonder
I do truly believe i have been call to the priesthood... and I will begin my journey to dicern what kind of priest (what order) I feel I'm being directed towars the Benedectine Monks! I will be meeting wtih my spiritual director soon to discuss this..
@boomac62 yeah, they do. (at least the ones at mt. angel abbey). my class spent a day there and we got to ask them questions and go to the services. so yeah, they get a super short vacation
nope. monks and friars are basically the same; both live in isolated religious communties and generally avoid contact with those that do not have a like purpose. the difference is that friars belong to mendicant orders; that is, they rely on charity. monks can sell goods and services to the outside community, such as food, wine and beer, and furniture (some make their own coffins!), running guest houses, etc.
altoid, not so exactly. Monks live in greater isolation, have also the oath of stability (stabilitas, to stay in their monastery until death) and most of them (if not all) have bald heads (a sign of humility, I think).
Friars do the active ministry - masses also for the laity and so.
i wonder if it would be boring to be a monk. i mean i don't think it would be boring to praise the lord for enternity, so im not sure if being a monk would be boring. also, im a girl so i don't think they have monk girls. unless you count nuns which i know nothing about
They sing in praise very beautifully. Wonderful video. Thanks for uploading. I can't live like that though. Love a woman much more than myself to seek personal salvation/renouncement.
Thinking Catholics believe they are "saved by works alone" is one of the most often qoutes I hear from Protestants. However if you read the source (Catholic Cathechism) and not the anit-Catholic propaganda you will find that we do not believe we can save ourselves through works. However Jesus does command us to "do as He commanded and also tells us:
2 Corinthians 5:10,"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad," and Revelation 22:12, "Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.
