For what it's worth, Gary Puckett didn't write any of his own material. That makes me happier although I do love all those songs with similar themes. And zfleming44, I'm happy you're still together after all those years! Shows age is but a state of mind!
Just an AWESOME SONG !!! Gary Pucket, (like Micheal McDonald) had one of the most unique voices in pop/ rock history, and nearly impossible to duplicate !!!! thanks for sharing the video !!!
Gary Puckett never looked like he should have such a deep, strong voice! His songs had a common thread. Did he write them? Makes you wonder but man, it was great music!
I was born in Costa Rica and Gary Puckett was the favorite for me and my sister, I had the 45rpm, is like new, played fantastic, thanks for the video, the memories are unique
I remember watching this on TV when I was only 9 and not thinking much of it. Now that I'm 55, I can really appreciate Gary's awesome voice and good looks!
This song is so powerful. It restores my memories of when I was 4 yrs old. Thanks to timeless pieces like these, a 4 yr old boy can hold memories of the late 60's.
I fell in crazy stupid love when this song came out. She used to sneak out of her house(which I didn't know until much latter) change into tight jeans and high heeled boots, put on her make-up; then show up at the local hot-rod hang out. I fell into lust..bad. We would street race and well you know... until dawn. She would never let me drive her all the way home. Told me my pipes would wake everyone up. Debbie was barely 15 when we met. A friend found out her age by chance. Broke my heart.
@caitlinatwood I worked the door at the local scooter trash bar. When I walked in(for my shift) the house band played, Foreigner's "Head Knocker". It was kinda my theme song. A big(6'1" 240lbs.) bad(12-1-1Pro fights) biker and that little girl really got to me. To this day, my eyes swell up, when I hear "Young Girl".
@caitlinatwood It all happened so very fast. I learned how young she was. Before I could wrap my head around that ; her mean, drunken, redneck Daddy found out too. He had the family packed up, in their station wagon and off to his brother's place, in Florida. It took place in a little over a week. I never saw or spoke to her again. She left a letter with her cousin for me. I've still got that letter. Haven't read it in over a decade...Wonder how it will affect me now?
This was so much of my early days. I was 22 and my bride was 17 in 1966. Still together after all these years. Great song and it was so revelant in the day.
@zfleming44 Today you would get busted for child abuse. I don't think this country has improved. Its just gotten more restrictive since then. I'm 67 now, had girls as young as 12 throwing themselves at me back then. that young I dissuaded, but tried not to hurt their feelings.I wish I was as lucky as you and found my life mate. Still single and content. But I look back at all the women and wish it could have worked with one. My compliments Sir..
I was 18 when this song was out and met my girlfriend in Torquay, England in summer of 67. This was our record. She was a lovely nurse from Banbury, uk. Happy days. Still have the old record. Great song.
@firefieldmpt, you and i both. For sure, I'm just fine living in the past, at 50 I don't foresee it ever changing either. With XM and You tube, I'm reliving the past , whatta ride !

@friday1808 still dont make it right. You could be put on the register for frolicking with someone under the age of conscent! no difference in my opinion.
@windsorbays 16 was considered acceptable not long ago in this country (hence the term "good old days"), and still is pretty much everywhere else in the world.
So many times I have asked myself whom I wished most that I could sing like, and this guy comes out on top every time. There isn't another singer on the planet that even sounds like him a little. Something about his voice makes me want to simultaneously smile and weep. Regardless of genre, Gary Puckett shares the rarest tier of talent with the likes of Roy Orbison, Marty Robbins, and Johnny Mathis.
@LaroldC Gary Puckett was one of the only front men back then in pop music that had a classically trained voice,he studied and trained for years with a top vocal coach. In that era of the 60's for pop bands that was very unusual. The man could sing anything. When you were wishing who you can sound like....good choice, you have good taste.
My music....my generation. I'm an old fart now....one foot already in the grave. I wish I could go back to those wonderful times just once more before I die.
This Girl Is A Woman Now and this song are are creepy songs. Anthems for pedophiles. Was there any underage groupie groping going on with GP and the Union Gap? Those quasi military uniforms were bizarre. Each of the close ups makes the band look kind of pervy.
@XamIIamX These songs were from a different time... From my growing up years, and well you would have to have grown up then to understand that these songs were a long way from the ideas we have today about pedophilia or other sick goings on
@TheGabbydeb I was in the eighth grade when this song was released. When the subject was discussed among my classmates, The general consensus was that this songs lyrics were creepy and these guys looked weird. Pedophilia has been around since the ancient Greeks. Those guys invented the word. They probably sang a few songs about the activity as well.
A group that was PR'd out of existence. They kept having to keep producing retreads of their previous hits. A curse. Without doing this they may have never been as popular as they ended up, but this also ended up killing them.

@babylove410 I never thought that anyone else could have had that same dream! Too funny....btw..I'm 53 so when you were too old, he could have "dated" me!
@lightening16 I would have dated him when I was 18, he was so ahhhhh! I was lucky to be kissed by Frank Sinatra when I was 28, I should have asked him if he could put in a good word for me to Dean.
@babylove410 - are you serious? u got kissed by the MAN himself, Frank Sinatra?? OMG!! bet u haven't washed ur cheeks since then, huh?? lol Congrats & Happy New Year!= 2 U!!
@dinan545bmw Yes I'm serious.I went to a function he was at(unknown to us). There were about 30 tables of 8 people and he went around and chose 2 couples that he would get photographed with.He chose my boyfriend and I and as soon as the photo was taken, I stood up and asked him if I could have a kiss, he said "why not" and smack, right on the lips. I was 29 and he was 68. From 10 feet away you could see those cobalt blue eyes. I didn't kiss my bf or brush my teeth for a week.I have the photos!!
@babylove410 - wow! what a tremendous story here and thanks for sharing also! that must have truly been one of your (anyone for that matter) greatest and most memorable moments in life thus far. and what gall on your part to even ask him for a kiss no less. ha ha. I'm sure you're bf must have been very impressed and moved by that very poignant and special moment at the time. Truly once in a million. Frank happens to be amongst my most favorite crooners of ALL TIME. BEST REGARDS
@dinan545bmw I'll never forget that as long as I live. People don't believe me until they see the photos. I thought, this is my only chance in life to get a kiss from him,so I had to go for it! I wasn't one of those loud obnoxious fans who would scare him off, I asked him very quietly, because lets face it,who wouldn't want a kiss from him. Best regards to you! Poor Gary Puckett, we forgot all about him!!
Gary Puckett was the first concert I seen. It was in Flint Michigan a very very long time ago..This guy could sing like no ones business. Seen them with Spanky and our gang
In the 45 years since I first heard that record, it's the first time I have seen the singer and group. I always thought they were black. Excellent record. Utterly timeless.
Excellent. I saw him live at an outdoor concert in Reno... around 1997-98, something like that. He didn't draw much of a crowd until he started singing, and then I was almost smashed flat against the barriers. He still looks great, and he sings beautifully. He stayed after the concert to sign autographs.
Also, no one could copy Gary Puckett's voice. He was so recognizable because of that voice, there is not a song of his that anyone else could sing, and have it come out as beautiful as his voice did. He had one of those "One of a kind voices". I could listen to him all day.
It's such a realistic situation Gary is singing about. Teenaged young girls wanting to put on a little more lipstick and mascara, and wear the short dresses to see of they could get a guy they like's attention. And it works, but she doesn't actually know what she's getting in to. Or does she? And the guy does love her, but finds out her true young age & tries to stop them.. Garys voice is better than ever in this particular song, and you can feel the frustration Still happens today.
@28211145 I have a masters degree in business administration and drive a 500 h.p. supercharged GT Mustang, so being careful isn't how I roll. However, I do appreciate your concern. BTW, it's not you're IQ to, but rather your I.Q., too. I also minored in English. Good day!
It's not necessarily about paedophilia or even accidental paedophilia. It's just about a relationship between an older man and a woman who is much younger than he, say a 30 year old and say, a 16 year old, still above the age of consent, but still a 'baby' by comparison. Why the dirty minds?
you know you people are crazy, this man is fantastic , benny you a wacko this man is a true talent we didnt worry you dont know real talent maybe you should go listen to more taylor swift or lmfao , or rap GROWdoigyisabenny
I love every song that Gary Puckett and the Union Gap did. They were a super group and Gary Puckett's voice was something I don't even have words to explain.
I had no idea they were performing in the early 40's,i always thought they were 60's.Way before their time.:)Sorry i read it wrong,he was born in 1942.
Great song but these days if you think about it it's a song about pedophilia "with all the charms of a woman, you're just a baby in disguise, young girls get out of my mind" Not cool but anyway it's a catchy tune and I have it in my ipod.
Thank you for posting, I grew listening to this song and his others. He is indeed a great singer. i too can relate to this song, I had crushes on my male teachers in High School and have always had crushes on older men growing up( not old men, but older men lol) Nice song !!
Who cares a fuck...The whole W.W.W is full with perverts, assholes and fenderbenders and making remarks about them does not make them leave anyway.Just enjoy the song and let go the simple fact that other idiots might listen to it also.
@17865329 Mmmmm... no. Dude - take half your age and add 7, thats the formulae for acceptable. If you're worried because - and I quote - her "mama wonders where she is", then you've got yourself a problem. But hey, don't mind me! I'm just a troll providing the amusing commentary. But just to be safe though, stay the hell away from my kids, PUCKETT!!
@Doigyisabenny Ok,rather than silly ping pong, let's go with the actual facts about the song. You're more right than wrong, it is about young musicians on the road, being "tempted" by groupies, mid-teens or so,appearing older.
However, it's not even written by Gary Puckett, it's written by a guy named Jerry Fuller, he says the song represents him at 20, encountering this on the road, and going out of his way not to give in to it. The "young girl" is a figurative amalgamation, non-specific.
Great video. I too have also this song forever. I had there album and played it till it is all scratched up. This is a treet for me. Thanks for the memories Happydukk
...of course the guitars are not plugged in...the drummer is off , the piano player stopped playing, and the trumpets are where? I remember actually seeing these shows and believing they where live. Not sure why they did so much lip-sinking back then.........but a great singer is a great singer. All the more reason to see them live!
I heard this on the radio today and got a raging case of the creeping willies. I expected to come here to see everyone saying so. Sad.

As others have noted, Gary Puckett could really sing. I'm surprised he didn't have a bigger solo career after this group disbanded.

When I was 4 years old, my uncle plays this song and I liked. Today I have 42 years old. Beautiful song.

Why the dirty minds?
frankmachin 3 months ago
It's about accidental paedophilia.

He was handsome, too!

Great song but these days if you think about it it's a song about pedophilia "with all the charms of a woman, you're just a baby in disguise, young girls get out of my mind" Not cool but anyway it's a catchy tune and I have it in my ipod.

Doigyisabenny 3 months ago
@Doigyisabenny Ah well ...Dude...so under your formula, who knows where you got it from, a 30 year old could
never be involved with a 20 year old? Good luck with that. You better tell Hugh Hefner your formula, however
he long ago morphed from hip to pathetic.
17865329 3 months ago
@Doigyisabenny Ok,rather than silly ping pong, let's go with the actual facts about the song. You're more right than wrong, it is about young musicians on the road, being "tempted" by groupies, mid-teens or so,appearing older.
However, it's not even written by Gary Puckett, it's written by a guy named Jerry Fuller, he says the song represents him at 20, encountering this on the road, and going out of his way not to give in to it. The "young girl" is a figurative amalgamation, non-specific.

...of course the guitars are not plugged in...the drummer is off , the piano player stopped playing, and the trumpets are where? I remember actually seeing these shows and believing they where live. Not sure why they did so much lip-sinking back then.........but a great singer is a great singer. All the more reason to see them live!

Isn't this the album version dubbed over a live performance. I think they were actually playing here. It just sounded different.
