I can get about 15 birds at my feeders here in southern Indiana. Hope I can get more this comming season. I set up my camera to get photos. I just like to sit and watch'em.
These guys are doing a great job. About 15 hummers live in oure have two feeders. One of them is so territorial he doesn't let the come near one of the feeders.
I've decided to stop feeding them sugar water. My entire back yard is planted for Hummingbirds instead. I have layers of Canna, Buddleia, Salvia etc. I rarely see more than 2 at a time but I think that it is safer for the birds this way.
selfish consumers buy sugar for the wildlife. a fed bear is a dead bear. same goes for the birds although in our short time span it's not so noticable. best way to feed them, if we have to, is plant what they need, not plastic containers with sugar water.
and what about the millions of acres that all that birdseed is grown and the sugar plantations where nothing can survive leaving a dead landscape. the birds are ready for the harvest and it's shipped off to rich consumers for feeders.
Does anyone have their hummingbirds zoom up and hover right in front of you? It's like they are checking us out. I thought it was a bumblebee the first time. Lol!
We get quite a few here in Western Canada as well. The most we've every gone through is about 1/2 gallon of nectar in a day. 4 gallons is crazy, so many humming birds!
If I was doing that much feeding I would try to make a big feeder by putting hummingbird feeder tubes around the bottom of a big barrel. Its kind of ridiculous to fill tiny feeders several times a day. Maybe a 30 gallon barrel, you have to clean feeders at least once a week so 4 gallons a day for 7 days = 28
I suggest you try 2:1 sugar water and drill more holes in your feeders. Those Perky Pet feeders can handle 12 at a time; more if you remove the bee guards (if you can do so without getting swarms of bees). Doing so will cut down on the time you spend refilling and cleaning. I know, I've got a similar hummer population year round here in California. I go thru 700# sugar/yr
Hummers prefer more concentrated sugar water as they are only interested in calories to fuel their food hunting activity.
I had to feed 8 one summer and that was enough work for me. They drank 20 pounds of sugar. I don't boil my water either, but I only get to change the food until the weekend because the birds are at my camp. They arrive every year on May 15th and the males leave about August 15th, the females about 2-3 weeks later. We LOVE them, they're always fun to watch. This past summer we only had 2 couples and later on their 4 offspring.
I always bring my water to a boil for 5 minutes and then add the sugar. Then I let it cool. I am lucky to have 2 hummers at a feeder at the same time. They are very fussy about sharing.
This is the 1st week of October and I still have one hanging around. I will leave my feeders up till the cold Missouri air comes a callin.
@Vanboozin I could not agree more, I always bring my water to a boil for 5 minutes and then add the sugar. Then I let it cool. I am lucky to have 2 hummers at a feeder at the same time. They are very fussy about sharing.
I have 2 feeders this year. I had one last year. Last year I had 3 or 4 birds that were there all summer. This year I have had 10-12 different birds. They say that the birds come back to the same feeder every year if it's there and they bring their kids when they are ready to fly. That means those hummers will be back next year. I am going to get another feeder. I filled both up this year once every 2 days. Last year it was once a week for the one feeder!

@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb I would think it depends upon the area. Here in New Mexico I'm guessing the higher water content is a plus.

they could probably take a little bit of the burden off their feeders by planting some nectar producing plants with red flowers.

Nice work
just a thought for ya.
its much safer to boil cold tap water, the inside of a hot water tank is very nasty and has been known to contaminate drinking water !
